Winter Mini Meet UP North

As always the Cold winds, Snow, Rain and Mists of this island are biting hard, So it must be time to set up another Northern Mini meet to warm your Hearts. I am not going to set up any runs out or off road stuff - but if anyone wants to add that into the agenda - as always that is fine. However if you want to stay in the Pub by the fires , have a walk on the moors adjacent or just lie in your tent recovering from the night before that is also fine. I can promise decent ale and food, a great pub, and lots of great if not slightly inebriated chat about everything from overland travel bike stuff to celestial happenings due to the collapse of a giant molecular cloud some 4.6 billion years ago along with the retinue of objects that orbit the sun and everything else between the two subjects. (dependent on the amount of Ale drunk of course). I will be setting a date in early February and Providing the said pub can accomodate us will anounce the intended destination closer to the time. It will be in North Yorkshire or Northumberland area. Anyone Interested.

Jake 23 Dec 2009 11:41

Hmmm.... first pub that I had in mind was the Crown hotel in Middlemoor Nidderdale - a pub with lots of motorcycle connections, photos of bike racers all over the walls and the owner a past racer himself - but also a walkers pub. All was going very well with the owner regarding holding a Horizons mini meeting until I mentioned (that Beelzebub - Lord of the Flies, Andras -Grand Marquis of Hell, Urabach - of the lower order of Demons, Ronwe - Holder of Lingual knowledge, Behemoth - Demon of Indulgence, Astaros - obtainer of friendships and That of great Lords and Asmodeus - The Destroyer (the heirachy of Satan Demons) were also attending and wanted all the village women and Virgins placed before them for there use - I think maybe it was Asmodeus coming along that blew the deal)..... or did I say 'there may be some lads who will turn up and possibly be doing some Legal green lanes in the Dales' ........ suddenly there was a stone like silence - after the long pause and inhaling the horror before him - he changed his attitude and said Oh !! no , NO - Your not welcome ....... Silence as I interjected But ! ... and the phone was hung up !.
So That is that one knocked on the head. (Baz you must have upset this guy at some time eh!).
I will be looking at another pub I have in mind and update soon. cheers.

ElChico 24 Dec 2009 14:51

I need to get out more!!

Great idea Jake
Am going "menkkal" - stir crazy (as us folks from Manchester would say...)
Am OK for the 6th/7th Feb, can't do 13th/14th as am on a course in Surrey.

Not sure which pub to suggest but what about the Dales - Horton in Ribblesdale? Was it the Lion or somat?

Cheers and merry festivities etc etc... be glad when the crap is over.... grumble mumble.... at least the winter Soltice has now passed - that's about 17 seconds more light per day from now on...

Count me in. Cannot do 23/24 Jan, but otherwise am free. Maybe Allenheads again (eccentric pub landlord (incl blue x marks the spot on head, otherwise great) or Cropton (excellent all round)? Let's call it the "Jens-Memorial Event".
cheers Chris

Jake 26 Dec 2009 08:57

Got to say Cropton was a great venue save for the camping plots / doggy drops - but we can manage that - I also had a pub up here in the borders in mind but as Cropton rates high on the votes had excellent beer and food along with really nice staff - I can easily go with it. I am going to set a date provisionally so we all know where we stand. Lets say the 19th 20th Feb I will call the pub at Cropton today see if he can fit us in. Starting to sound like a plan.

We'll have to meet up - either there or on the way?

Laura Bennitt 28 Dec 2009 18:20

Yes please!

Count me in, I'll have got back from the latest travels over a month before then so will definitely need to go somewhere, and it appears the flat I've been living in no longer has a roof so I'll be well accustomed to winter camping by then!!

Laura

Jake 29 Dec 2009 16:21

Attached are the details of the pub for those that have not been before. Its provisionally looks like the weekend of the 19 /20 feb is Ok At present the pub has the following accomodation available at reasonable rates for those not wanting to camp - available at the moment are 3 x double rooms, 1 x three bed, 1x twin room and a cottage with sleeping for 4. Camping places will be limited as will the amount of people they can take for the weekend - so get your name down now if your coming along only definite attendees please.
Anyone available to organise the off road run out ? if - that is what is wanted.
For accomodation speak to phil or Pauline at the pub - 01751 417330. The New Inn, Cropton, North Yorkshire - mention Horizons do when you book. I have not put any accomodation on Hold as I do not want to be responsible for people not turning up so room will go to first come first served.
There are no proper camping facilities so you get a small patch of grass on a rear lawn behind the pub. Space is limited here.

Interested then get your names down so I can give firm details to the pub.

I have provisionally told them twenty people maybe at a push up to thirty.

Jake.

debseed 29 Dec 2009 17:06

I'm a definite & I will be camping.

I would love to do some green-laning, but I'm very much a follower (for now!)

britch 29 Dec 2009 20:01

please save a camping space for me, I am definitley coming and looking forward to another great weekend, and the dates gives me time to warm up after the dragon :cool4:

Debs, Yes for both weekends, I am going down to Wales on the Saturday morning, haven't planned a time or route yet,and may be going with some local guy's who I know are going, will get in touch somehow nearer the time, cheers

Jake 29 Dec 2009 21:56

Paul, re ''I can put together an off road route for that area if there is any interest''.

That would be very nice of you to do so. Please keep in mind all the routes need to be still legal and open - also there will be novices and probably some larger bikes and 1 overland sidecar unit so try to make it so the route can accomodate as best as possible all levels, considering the time of year and the broad spectrum of bikes and riders the emphisis is on Fun not so much a huge technical challenge.

Tchus Jake.

So far we have 13 coming along all camping, The pub is booked definate, breakfasts will be available sat and sun,
I am not interested in another Brewery tour but if anyone is let me know - I think they will need a few to justify it. It may also clash with the ride out.

I'd be interested to know what happened to the winter beer we sampled there last time that was for M&S (the one with sweet mince etc). I searched high and low for it in M&Ss and it could not be found anywhere.

Jake, Bev and I would naturally be interested but I'm trying to arrange a trip to Norway, and sods law and all that....can check nearer the time even if only as day trippers.

Happy New Year all ;-)

Jake 5 Jan 2010 16:18

Touring ted be nice to see you if you get along, Fritz be good to see you even as a day tripper (starting to think you cant take the pace of these cold ones any more) - be even more lovely to see Bev - ( just cos she a lot prettier than you Fritz nothing personal you know) Take it your going climbing up North in February ?

Hi Fritz - We got a bottle in amongst some other bottles as Crimbo prezzie - although we were also interested in it after our tasting trip, we couldn't even drink the bottle between us - bit too many 'hints of fruit and spice' for me. We were disappointed because we have really enjoyed all other Cropton brews but this one was just not to our taste. Not that this helps you find a bottle :detective: but just to let you know it did hit the shelves.

Cheers for the book. Hope to see you both at Cropton.

dazco 5 Jan 2010 19:35

Call me a Puff if you want:mchappy:, but i might not be camping after all. The missus is looking into hiring a cottage in Cropton for 3 nights over that weekend so we can take the dog up as well and have a day out doing some walking.
ill let you know either way:mchappy:

Daz

Jake 5 Jan 2010 20:30

Dazco your a puff - there thats got it out the way Eh!, you know the pub has a cottage for rent if its any good to you, keep it quiet though cos its not unknown for certain people here to slip quietly into the warmth when your looking the other way and find a spot on the floor or a setee. If you look around there the easy ones to spot after a few beers - they usually wear pink shirts and very tight hot pants. (the bloke one do anyway.)
Me Ill be the one in the mini skirt and fishnets with red high heels :eek3:!!!
(ignore the beard though)
Tchus Jake.

I was deliberately ignoring this thread in the hope it would go away - too bloody cold in February !! - but now Doug is ""rounding us up" and Angus is putting forward volunteers I can hardly lose face - so booked the Friday off work today - my tent took a bit of a battering at Aviemore too - grit in all the tent poles -but I am sure it will survive one more trip - 400 miles from here! hopefully the snow will be gone by then.

Chizz - Usually we do this one in January so I thought of all those softies that might think it a tad cold so I moved it nearer to spring time instead - it will be almost tropical down in Yorkshire bye then.
Be really nice to see you all down from the top end.

we are up to 19 so far - I will be ringing the pub to confirm numbers next week as they want a bit notice so if there is anyone else comming get your name down now If your a possible or hedging your bets on the weather give me an indication. Thanks.

If there are vast falls of snow I will probably postpone the do anyway so worry not.

Hi Paul
Would be keen on joining the recce. Won't be attending the meet this time as wifey needs to be placated on that weekend. My trail bike is a DRZ400 and would van it over to North Yorks. (live in Brighouse, W Yorks). Am definitely free on Sun 24th Jan. On Sat 23rd I might have a work commitment. Will only know on the Fri before if I'm free or not.

Leave a msg here, PM me or email via my website.

Laura Bennitt 17 Jan 2010 10:06

I may be bringing the new man with me to provide added warmth in the tent, he's not a biker but wants to be so he may as well find out what he'd be letting himself in for (eg having the beers ready when we get back)!

I also have a spare tent if you want Doug.

This is all assuming the TA can be dug out of the garage by then, the area in front of the flat is currently thick packed icy snow.

See you soon!

Laura

bikerden 19 Jan 2010 07:32

I'd love to join you on this meet, but it looks at the moment as though we have a planning meeting for the postponed Scooters in the Sahara trip to Gambia the weekend of 20/21 Feb. If anything changes I'll be there... Trust there will be camping space if I just turn up unannounced ?

Dennis

Jake 19 Jan 2010 14:01

Dennis I am sure we can fit you in no problem - bye the way the site as I recall had trees dotted around so maybe your hammock would work well here.
Jake.

Jake 19 Jan 2010 19:04

I have told the pub to expect about 22 I would think we will be pushed to fit many more on the camping area. Maybe a few But only non snoring types !.I have asked about prices for breakfasts and will update everyone when I get a reply.

Jake 20 Jan 2010 18:09

Breakfasts are not the cheapest at £7.00 and I have arranged for tickets to be bought for breakfast the night before at the bar. I think the pub would like to know how many for breakfasts each day sat/sun as they are off season really and need to get supplies - can anyone remember what the breakfasts were like I cant - i think I might have had a fuzzy head both mornings.

Debz 20 Jan 2010 18:40

Jake
I seem to remember that the food was very good in general. The brekkies were good, with the very nice staff bringing us endless coffee, tea and toast. You'll have forgotten about your breakfast as you walked it off very quickly on the Sunday, pacing up + down, waiting for your bike:innocent:

Debz

DougieB 20 Jan 2010 21:17

thanks for the tent offers.. I'm gonna buy a new one, in between a £35 Vango 200 and a £60 Coleman Katz (or someting..). Really pushing the boat out...

I'm also now going to be in London and cycle up from there, probably leaving Wednesday. Well, depends on how the drinks go, could be Thursday :-)

Hopefully get there by Saturday. Going to aim right of Notts, and head up the coast.

£7... For that price I'd be expecting the landlords 21 year old blonde daughter to be waking me up with a bj then and cooking it for me in my tent in her undies.

:innocent:

I'll skip breakie mate...

From what I remember the breakfast was quite filling and wholesome. Yes £7 is a bit pricey but it's compensated for by the free camping.

Ahh, well now I feel bad for saying that :oops2:

Jake 21 Jan 2010 14:38

Yes its free camping. So that makes the breakfast a much more reasonable option.

I hope that's not as serious as it sounds :( It would be awful if you couldn't make it after all the organising you've done.

Jake 22 Jan 2010 00:28

It is pretty bad - an old injury that has thrown a real wobbler, i Can hardly sit or stand up, or even pick up a cup to drink except when heavily sedated that makes the pain bearable for short periods never mind walk, drive or ride a bike at the moment. Hopefully if it will sort itself out enough for me to be mobile again I will get down there but your all going to have to be gentle with me. if I get down I doubt I will be doing much riding around when I am there on this occasion.

dazco 22 Jan 2010 18:10

I'm just stepping outside, I may be some time....

Or the off road run recce report. Had a quick ride out on Sunday to check the lanes for the upcoming meet, the low lying lanes are all very wet after the recent weather and are very susceptible to damage in these conditions as well as being quite tricky so we should avoid using these. The higher lanes have a lot of snow cover and the few that I managed to get onto became impassable.

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/Recce002.jpg

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/Recce005.jpg

Brook House craggs
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/Recce003.jpg

No doubt conditions will change in the next two weeks and I am still happy to have another crack at the lanes then but I am not going to get another chance to ride them again before the meet so I don't know what we will find. Should be fun though. :mchappy:

Cheers,

Paul

Jake 25 Jan 2010 15:41

paul thanks for trying to set up the ride out if its still bad then maybe a road run out will have to be the way to go. But I am sure there are lots of places some of those travelling to the do have not seen or been to as the area is splendid for road runs - I my self even if I make it can not do an off road run due to a back injury then again I might not even make the do - will have to see. Your efforts in any case are much appreciated Thanks.

Keep taking the medicine ;-)

Jake 27 Jan 2010 20:20

It would appear that my injury is worse than I was hoping and will need extensive ongoing treatment and surgery is not ruled out, and I may end up out of circulation for quite some time. As a result I wont be able to make the do at Cropton. I would ask if someone else can take up the mantle of organiser and do any of the contact with the pub on my behalf. If someone can I will give the contact details for the pub and the person to speak to. Still on the positive side it leaves an extra space for camping. If bye some minor miracle i get better and the doctors have it wrong then I will try still to get down - but don't hold your breath on that one.:(
On a worse note that is my trip to Syria ruled out this year as well as the end of my days working with stone. Unemployed now.

Jake - you do realise the two ladies you met at Tan Hill will be devastated?

Jake 28 Jan 2010 22:09

Fritz reckon your right - sheila on the right is the one to blame she not arf kicked back that night and in such a small tent something had to go. Shirley(left) was most put out that I wasn't up to finishing the job if you remember she head butted and tipped me bike over when she left the tent that morning.
Mind you I look like I might be getting up to something - in anticipation - that's before we got in the tent.
Your a one to watch when you have that camera in hand.

greenmanalishi 5 Feb 2010 01:46

Hmmm

Yes I thought as much. Cold weather, sheep, and the slaughterd lamb springs to mind but I am game, weather permitting. Looking forward to it!!
Possibly a full moon. Grrrrr....

Chizz 5 Feb 2010 08:42

Still on for this !

Angus and i still planning down - weather permitting - coldest january in Scotland since records began apparently !. (luckily for me I spent two weeks of it in Africa!)

Just started some research on best heated clothing - will have to choose between heated jacket or new sleeping bag. - advice on either much appreciated.

Anyone else coming down from Scotland? - We plan to leave at first light and will be in Edinburgh area for lunchtime/early afternoon.

Sorry to hear about your back Jake - it will be a shame if you cant make it after all the effort you have made in arranging this.

Chizz (Bruce)

Hi Debz

I'll have a breakfast on the Sunday please.

I play football twice a week... Well, I say football... It's more like UFC lol.

I ran full speed into some brick shit house of a guy who thought it would be better to stop me with his elbow than his face lol.

Hi Ted
I recall you missed a previous HU bike meet cos of your footy injuries. Maybe you need to take up a more gentle passtime like macrami or synchronised swimming :innocent:.
