Traveling to HU-UK meetingin July by car?
 

Hi all

'Tis my first post, so please go easy on me if i have done something wrong!

I am hoping to come to the HUUK meeting in July, and was wondering if it is ok to come by car? I'm sure this might seem like a slightly strange request as this site is dedicated to travel by 2 wheels, But i'm coming over from Northern Ireland, and flying and hiring a car is substantially cheaper than bringing the bike.

Normally i'm not so tight and relish a wee jaunt on the bike, but currently i'm saving up for (hopefully!) an RTW trip - so right now every pound is a prisoner.......

I thought i'd ask here first as it crossed my mind that perhaps car drivers were considered Satans spawn at these do's!

Whatever you do, you had best be quick in booking - a sell out (again) - but if it rains there'll be space on the day!!

Then if that is ok .. go. Once you are inside the venue people won't know how you came .. unless they were paying that much attention.. most though are more intreseted in the talks .. the people that have displays up, the bikes outside, and maybe the tents out the back...

:)) I've said enough about the weather over there... If the rain is going to keep them away then they won't be travelling far on their trip!

John Whitehouse, of Winmalee, has just bought a rain gauge. The packaging carries the recommendation "Ideal for outdoors!" With the drought at the moment it maybe of more use in the shower

find a spot to park the car in the area - then with gear in backpack, walk to the meeting. No one will be the wiser, and you won't have to explain.:blushing:

We're not all idiots who give others a hard time for doing something that's more convenient for them!

Someone last year came in their car but wearing their bike gear - it was more a source of amusement than ridicule.

It is far better to do teh trip by car than not do it by bike.
I have made up my mind this year to not let weather etc defeat me, so had made up my mind to resort to using my car rather than abandon any trip... So the bastards have cut off the fuel so I can't go to Dijon by car or bike :(

Anyone got a diesel enfield for sale. I can always rob the heating oil tank if needed.

I've opted for the cheapest possible economy class car, so it could be a Skoda!

OldBMW said it - far better to be there than worry about your wheels. Its not a virility test so roll up and be welcome. You'll enjoy it immensely.

Sorry you wont get to Dijon. Is the industrial action still on? Can you tell me if it affects Belgium? I'm coming from Dover/Boulogne tonight, going over into Belgium , and Germany next day (for HU Germany).Then on down into France after HU. Any advice?





You know theyre talking about $200 a barrel now - I think diesel must be the answer - if I could sell 2 bikes and get a trade in.

Belgium is fine, the bit that is hurting is they are blockading the supply depots in France. However the french drivers may be emptying stations close to teh border :( Veurne for instance, so best leave UK with 100 mile or so range.
Yesterday I fuelled up car and bike, queues made it an all day job,, I actually went to lunch in the relais across teh car park whilst waiting. If I were you I would come down through Germany and cross over at the shortest point to your place. might be worth scrounging a plastic can to fill also if you have the carrying capacity. In a way this has swung me more towards getting the Enfield rather than an old Triumph next year. I can dieselfy the Enfield at any time and then have a range of about 640 miles and at a pinch run on heating oil. I think irrespective of anything fuel will probably double in price every 5-8 years and wil increasingly become a major factor in peoples choice of transport.

If you want to see diesel bikes, there will be a good selection at the diesel bike rally in Hamm again this september ( 12/14th) I hope to be there on my way back via eastern europe.

Im coming by car !!

Having sold my bike in Colombia in May and having no money for another bike yet, im afraid ill be showing up on 4 wheels..

The way you get there is of no importance, its BEING there !!

On the plus side, I can bring as much beer, food as I want and maybe even my gas BBQ :)

I went to a couple in Colorado in my beat to hell Toyota pick-up. Hilux I think you call them. It's making me lazy. After several years of only having a motorcycle to get around, I've gotten lazy and used to a small truck.

It was nice showing up with a large ice chest and beers.

I'll also be there by car. I'm flying over early on the Saturday morning, then will be driving there with a hire car, so at least it looks like I'm not alone. :thumbup1:

I may be coming in my old ford galaxy - if I take the seats out I can use it as a makeshift campervan and sleep in the back. Would I have to park in a car park or on the field?
