Ted Simon

I have to be honest one of the main reasons I went to the weekend was to meet and listen to Ted Simon.
I have just finished Jupiters travels so the timing was perfect.
I got him to sign my old penguin paperback (28 years old) and he seemed pleased to see it. I also bought a copy of his new book and I will be starting that today.
Listening to his narration and seeing the pictures will enhance my enjoyment of both books.

He really is a very intelligent but humble chap and resisted the opportunity to ridicule when some nugget asked "why Jupiter Ted?" ....replying quietly "you have not read the book".

Well done Ted and hope to see you again sometime......an inspiration to all I think.

Nugget!

Yes I'm the "nugget" you refer to and I am quite offended.. I too read Jupiters Travels, but it was a LONG time ago, probably about 1980 or so, I can't remember... which brings me to my point, I may be suffering from some form of memory loss, there are some things that I recall easily, but much of what I've read or place names and peoples names are really hard to retain. I probably read Jupiter's travels while I was serving my country (& riding my old Bonnie) in N.Ireland and Germany, while you were probably tucked up in nappies or in some cushy university...
That's about as offensive as I'll be. As the weekend and the excellent presentations and the superb atmoshere should not be spoilt by a silly off-the-cuff comment.
Yours
Col

Well Col
Many of us "serve our country" in different ways. Some are engineers, plumbers, teachers, drivers and so on. Their work is as worthwhile as yours; no more, no less. And university is not "cushy", incidentally.

Forget the nugget remark - who cares?

I really wish I could have been there this weekend to meet Ted. Jupiter's Travels was one of the main inspirations for the big trip I'm on now so I guess I can't really complain too much!

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great time there at the weekend.

ElChico 25 Jun 2007 17:40

we did all have a grand time! But can I swap with you?

Mike
just had a quick look at your site and it looks amazing, I'll have a proper read 2moro, but of course will forgotten what I've read by the day after!! Te he..
Safe journey, enjoy

ElChico, Webmistress,

I'm the "nugget" who knew which page in "Jupiter's Travels" to open up before passing across the book to Elchico.

I thought webmistress's "nugget" comment was out of order too, by the way. I thought it was quite ironic (funny, in fact) that the offending comment was made when referring to the fact that Ted Simon "resisted the opportunity to ridicule". Hopefully it was just an "off the cuff" remark that was regretted (benefit of the doubt, and all that).

So what do we have here? A couple of real gentlemen ganging up on a girl??

Offended by being called a "nugget" by a girl? Those squaddies must have been really tough blokes in your day - if only those Ivans had known the truth they could have saved all that money they wasted on those big bombs and just got some lovely East German girls to line the Berlin wall shouting not-very-rude names.

Nobody made a fool of you on Saturday, nor here, you did that yourself. As more than one squaddie has been heard to say, if you haven't got a sense of humour you shouldn't have joined.

Here's hoping Ted reads HUBB postings!

Nuggets & assuptions!!

As expected my comment has provoked some lively debate which is always welcome yippee!!!

ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME

You assume I went to university for some strange reason, but thankyou and I am flattered.

I actually had a very brief comprehensive education and was working for the ministry of defence in 1980 as a welder.

I made the Chieftian tanks that men serving queen and country used until we went on to develop the Challanger and Challenger 2.

I did go to Leeds university a couple of times to see some bands does that count?

Lighten up ElChico life is too short and the world is too small.

If it makes you feel better my bike died on the way home due to gearbox failure and its gonna cost me a grand to repair.

Jane
Top Welder and always courting controversy!!!

PS lets not lose the thread my comments were about Ted not the nugget!

phoenix 26 Jun 2007 00:54

"Why can't we just all... get along?", to quote "Mars Attacks".. :)

Seriously though, here isn't the place to have slagging matches (I'll discuss it offline if anyone wants to talk), but it's also not the place to make potentially offensive comments about people that are likely to be reading. Thats ill timed, at best.

Frinch11, for my part, if anything that I said was interpreted as "ganging up" on webmistess, then I apologise, but I think it's important to defend common courtesy on the HUBB, and thats what I did, but hopefully not in an offensive way. webmistress herself seems quite unperturbed about the whole thing, which I think is a good thing!

And yes, Ted's presentation blew me away. The man knows how to hold a crowd's attention, even if he's not spectacular with a laptop! I think it's because he's so down to earth. Who else would ask for a photo of his audience? His "the microphone may be dead, but I'm not" (while jumping up and scaring the shit out of me) line was just inspiring. I'm absolutely delighted to have met him.

Actually it was the mic battery that was dead not the laptop .....

Tell me Ted.... why Pluto?

Aha a [ top] lady welder , please send photo -

of your welds !

ps. Is a nugget a good or a bad thing ? [ my knowledge of UK slang is rather lacking theses days ]

Great Talk by Ted!
Greatly enjoyed by yours truly!
Especially as I won his new book on the raffle which he happily signed for me!

I must admit to knowing our nugget fellow, and in real life he's a jolly nice chap!
Although he does have unusual appreciation of the colour orange and enjoys making small cardboard cut outs of himself and dropping them into fish tanks around the world!
His new book "Alzheimer's, a history of... oh what was I on about" is a truly inspired piece of writing!
I did tell him to stay away from the bar early on as well but I think he was led astray!

But thanks to Ted!
Fantastic to have met him!

David.

I also really enjoyed meeting and listening to Ted Simon, what a great attitude to life this guy seems to have,I hope i have his enthusiasm and drive if i make it to his age.
Don"t understand why Col got a basting though, why should he have not asked his question,Ted seemed perfectly happy to answer it,anyway that matters not, great presentation Ted.

Why are you being so negative towards me? Have I made any personal comments, or otherwise offended you? You've had your apology, which was obviously not enough. I have no interest in tangling with you, as I'm sure no-one else has any interest in listening either. How about we just try not to get on each other's tits for a bit? Is that reasonable?
[/quote]

Sorry Phoenix, I cant reply to your PM directly as I'm not considered old enough to be allowed.

I unreservedly apologise for offending you, and for getting on your moobs. To me this was all just about humour, people teasing each other, laughing at themselves and each other, etc.

Of course it all goes wrong if you try it with people who take themselves seriously, as Helga-the-Welda found out to her...er...amusement.

The "I served my country" stuff what pure bullsh*t as any squaddie will tell you - I just called it for what it was!

I'm off to buy a pair of moccasins.....
