Anyone interested in green laning in Wales and/or Scotland

Hi guys and gals,
I´m hoping to do a quick clockwise lap of the UK starting early July. Wanted to know if anyone would be keen on doing some green laning in Wales or Scotland?

Unfortunately green lanes don't exist in Scotland (wish they did though), its different here from England and Wales and you need the landowners permission to go off road which is quite frankly rubbish. If anyone knows different, I'd love to know where you can off road in Scotland.

As Mike says,

You need the land owners permission. The hard part is getting the permission as the Crown owns about 35%, The MOD about 30%, Forestry Commission and Private estates the rest...
When I took my Honda Goldwing on the West Highland way and the Great Glen way I had to get permissions in writing from all parties..

Some landowners around Fort William will give you restricted permissions as long as you stick to 1. Known Tracks. 2. Stay away from live stock. But most of the tracks are maintained by the forestry Commission, so thats 99% of the problem.

You may get permission from1 but refused access by another.

The permissions for the west highland way are :-

1. Forestry Commission 85% of the route.
2. MOD as the route to devils staircase from Kinlochleven is part of the Armed forces adventure training area and Commando Training Grounds.
3. The Laired Cameron of Loch eil.. (Alway refused permission unless you live in Fort William.) luckly Have family for that one.
4. Crown estates/Forestry for Rannoch Moor down to Loch Lommond.

You may be very Lucky and find the foresty gates open or no one will ask as full of tourists at this time of year.. But and this is Big BUT Local motorcycle clubs will report you as they have permission that can be withdrawn at any time as this is their Training area for the Scottish 6 day Trial.

I have Known guys to ride and respect the Locals and tourists and successfully got permission on the day so it could pay you to Knock on doors on your way round scotland, as you can only get 2 answers.

An idea for you is to use the old disused railway lines as Rail Track never says No...

To many loop holes. But if and when a plan comes together along with all the hassle it can work.

RTW planning and visa is easer than planning off road in our own fair land..
that could be why its only a local call charge to speak with god. lol And we must all remeber Moses did Have a Triumph.

the scottish 6 day trial around fortwilliam has been goinf for 110 years.
The Edinburgh and District motorcycle club who run the ssdt have to spend all year keeping the land owners happy and at the end of the trial they then have to go and repair all the damage caused..

The Camerons of loch eil have always supported the ssdt and most of the trial is now on their land. It used to be a different course every year but now due to restriction on the land the route has now stayed the same for the last 15 years..

So green laning in Scotland is the big No No Unless you have express permission in writing in duplicate. The forestry and crown have all the rules and forms on their respective websites.

Why green lane when we have some of the best motorcycle roads in the UK.

In the borders we have these routes like these

1. the devils beef tub from Moffat to Edinburgh A 701/ A702
2. the graymares trail from moffat to Edinburgh via Selkirk
3. A75 Dumfries to Strannra
4. A701 Dumfries to Moffat and the A702.

These are just some of the back roads in the borders and Dumfries and Galloway..

Hi guys,
thanks for all the info. I'm currently in Brazil finishing off my RTW and am so used to just peeling off the road and exploring, guess it's just not the same in good old Blighty!
I'll take your advice on those roads you've mentioned, but the reason I prefer green lanes to tarmac is they're more fun (for me at least)!
