Cornwall 2012?

Anyone fancy another Cornwall meet? :welcome:

It will probably be a new venue this year as we have bought an old cottage a mile further up the hill. We had to spend the summer renovating but I now have a shed big enough to work on the bike without having to move everything else outside and a BIG back garden.

Accomodation will be camping in the garden, although I might be able be able to squeeze a few in the house. Last year I had questions about bringing a van/landy - no problems. There is a pub 50m down the road so no shortage of beer, not that there was any problem last year. They do good old fashioned pub grub, not quite as nice as the Crows Nest last year but a bit cheaper. If we have the numbers I might even be able persuade them to let us have exclusive use of the restaurant on Saturday night for a meal and presentations (any volunteers?) There is also a village shop/post office/tea room across from the pub.

:mchappy:
I am happy to do a trail ride on Saturday again and/or there could be the opportunity of a trials course at the end of the garden, bike provided (I said it was big).

For anyone who doesn't fancy trail riding, you might want to bring a pair of boots you can walk in as we are right on the moor. If you head north the first road is close to 10 miles away, but you don't have to go far to get some fabulous views, providing the weather is clear.

So how about it? Is February OK again or would people prefer it to ba a bit later?

Fantastic Mister Fox 27 Nov 2011 22:08

Last years one was great, I'd be up for coming down.

A little later in the year makes camping more pleasureable but I'm happy to action man it up.

Harty 28 Nov 2011 13:05

I'd be up for this, it sounds great. Mind you I'm attending the Dragon rally on the 11th/12th Feb

Cheers

rich g650x 28 Nov 2011 16:29

If it's anything like the last one, I wouldn't miss it for the world.

ooohhhh yeaaaah !!! :thumbup1:

greenmanalishi 29 Nov 2011 20:44

Date pending

Pending the date, I work every other Saturday, count me in, last year was fantastic. I will contact Diehard and Chef Jules and let them know.

Ted you won't make this one you will have a sore arse, poorly leg, dodgy stomach, brain tumor or a broken bike. Unless... you turn up in the Berlingo with a 10 man frame tent and cast iron woodburner:rofl:

I'll be friggin there.... belingo or V-strom !! We shall see bier

greenmanalishi 29 Nov 2011 21:01

You saw it here!

Rossi, so far half of the Wirral posse signed up. Ted is coming along just to prove that he didn't actually stay hidden in his girlfriends bedroom for 6 months and post a load of photoshopped pictures on his blog

Any Doombar planned? I had developed a taste for it by Sunday morningbier

*Touring Ted* 30 Nov 2011 11:36

I would definitely opt for a later date...

I have Raynauds disease in my fingers so cold riding cripples me :(

If if happens when it's cold, I'll just come down in my Berlingo Multispace with a gas bbq and a crate of beer :D

steve T 30 Nov 2011 21:09

Got room for a couple more ,thats if my son passes his test, was going to the dragon but missed out on the tickets:(but this sounds like fun so the date doesn't matter to me

Tiffany 1 Dec 2011 10:34

Hooray!!!

I'm definitely up for it again, a HU meet in my own county, even if it is 100 miles up north.
I can be flexible on dates, though February camping is fine with me.

Happy to do a talk if you want. Happy to just eat, drink, ride and chat.bier

Keith1954 1 Dec 2011 12:31

Count on +2 more support from just down the road (Newquay, North Cornwall) too .. :thumbup1:

Be good to have you along again and I'm sure folk would appreciate a talk. Watch out for those hedges though if you want to join the trail ride this year.

Doombar - the pub has it on tap but I could try to get a couple of kegs delivered.

Grumbleweed 4 Dec 2011 19:59

Anymore room for a small one? Am only in Devon so would like to meet some others from here!

GW

Belle 5 Dec 2011 14:12

And me - I'd like to come please if its before the end of Feb as I'm off a scootering on March 4th. Possibly one other with me but we'll share a tent anyway so it shouldn't cause a space issue.

:mchappy:

IanC 6 Dec 2011 13:24

Count me in!

Any idea on date/venue? Reckon I can make it from West Somerset :-)

Jimbike 6 Dec 2011 13:28

I've never been to a HU meet before but would love to meet up with more in the area. I'm in Hayle and don't need much excuse for a ride. :)

Hi
Ill be up for it ,camping not a problem ,staying upright could be!
Chris.

Harty 7 Dec 2011 14:20

Sam Manicom

I just pm'd Sam Manicom, and he said set the date, if he has no presentations then he'll also attend the weekend and do us a talk!! Great news

rossi 7 Dec 2011 17:05

:thumbup1: Fantastic Harty. Walter Colebatch was down here in October and said he might be able to make February too. Time to set a date then. 17-19th or 24-26th? Avoids the Dragon but before Belle goes :scooter:.

IanC 7 Dec 2011 17:14

That would be good! Met Walter at Austin & Lois's a couple months ago but didn't realise at the time just what a hardcore rider he is!

Belle 7 Dec 2011 22:20

Excellent Rossi, thanks. Either w/e is good for me.

Belle :D

jim lovell 8 Dec 2011 16:54

Hi Rossi, count me in again please. I had a great time last year, looking forward to it..

Tiffany 8 Dec 2011 21:25

A Cornwall Meet

Either weekend is good for me, at the moment anyway.
great that Belle can make it, she'll be shaking the tin with me for the Mongolian Children's Hospital Mural- a thread on the Bar forum about that.:D

mark manley 9 Dec 2011 06:43

Last year's was good, a nice part of the world to visit and well organised but I can't make this year as I will be on tour in Shiva's own country.

greenmanalishi 11 Dec 2011 17:59

17-19th feb

Hi folks I can make the 17-19th of Feb, but I cannot make the weekend after that. I work every other Saturday and getting a weekend off work is similar to pulling teeth.

Big Yellow Tractor 12 Dec 2011 07:18

Would there be room for me and my mate; on bikes, camping ?

Where abouts in Cornwall ??

rossi 12 Dec 2011 17:00

Looking like it will be the weekend 24-26th. My other half is away over for a few days the week before and won't appreciate coming back to a house full on the 17th. Better that I plan a family weekend together on the 18th and have the meet the following weekend.

Just hope that the weather isn't too wet between now and then as the ground is already saturated. It really needs to dry out a bit. Plenty of time for that though.

Belle 12 Dec 2011 17:39

Rossi - Any chance you could tell us where it will be please? The suspense is too much!

Thanks

Belle

rossi 12 Dec 2011 22:38

Of course. We are in the village of Minions, about 4 miles north of Liskeard and 25 form Plymouth. Have a look a wee bit NNW of the village and you will find the Hurlers stone circle with a 360 degree panoramic photo, just to give you a taste of what the place looks like, providing the weather is nice.

Belle 13 Dec 2011 13:36

Excellent Rossi! Thank you. Should be good

Belle

Nadsicles 13 Dec 2011 15:31

Ooh! Can I come!! I'd like to use it as a test run before we head off on scoots. So I should be there on a loaded C90!!

rossi 13 Dec 2011 21:47

:welcome: but you might want to give the trail ride a miss. More time for bier

Nadsicles 14 Dec 2011 11:16

oh, I don't know... Could be a laugh... :mchappy: But then, beer does sound good too....
Thank you!

greenmanalishi 15 Dec 2011 23:50

Possibly

Rossi, could you put me down as a maybe? I wont know until the beginning of February whether or not I will be able to get the time off? I also understand Ted will be in India where the climate is more suitable to his delicate condition.

Thanks

Fear not.. I shall be back in February.. That's if I even get there. Bloody Indian VISA farce...

rossi 22 Dec 2011 10:50

Update

For the Friday, I will warn Marcia at the pub that there might be a few extra bodies for food, but not book tables, as people will be arriving at different times. I can always hook a laptop to the tv and cram a few in the lounge for a presentation.

It looks like we can have exclusive use of the restaurant at the pub for the Saturday night. This means that we can all have a meal and do any presentations in the same place, with Doom Bar on tap beer

Advance warning if you are considering joining the trail ride. While we all made it round last year, those with more road biased trail tyres did find it a bit tricky in places. I'm not sure which way I will go this year but I wouldn't expect conditions to be much different. If you're going shopping for tyres in the next few weeks I would strongly recommend something with a bit of bite. Tyre combo of choice locally is an enduro front and MT43 trials rear. While the MT43 is OK on the road and can last over 2k miles an enduro front isn't / won't. Good compromises would be something like pirelli mt21's, mitas E-09's or at a push a set of tkc80's, personally I like the E-09's. I also have rimlocks on my bike so I can drop the pressures right down for off road although these are not essential.

Alexlebrit 23 Dec 2011 10:39

Could you put me down as a provisional yes? My wife has severe ME which makes planning ahead a bit difficult as I wouldn't want to leave her if she's bed-bound for the weekend.

John May 29 Dec 2011 20:52

Hi Rossi

Chris and I would love to come - possibly on the outfit again.

As for time, either a bit earlier or a bit later would suit us as it's the Classic bike show on the 18/19th Feb and we're aiming to go to the Elefantreffen at the Nurburgring the following weekend (25th/26th).

Hi Rich

Thanks for your message - but the HUBB won't let me respond until I have 5 posts - this should be number 5!

Hope to catch up in Cornwall - and congrats on making it to Mongolia. Can't wait to hear all about it. How about doing a talk???

John and Chris.

Chris M-C 2 Jan 2012 21:14

Hi, Any room for another body? if so I'd like to come along.. not been to any UK HU meets, but went to one in Portugal in 2010.. a cold weather meet sounds ok to me, the beer sounds good too.bier

BaldBaBoon 9 Jan 2012 22:45

After my new year resolution of putting anything and everything ahead of work, The thought of travelling down to Cornwall is a great idea!

If you still have the room for one little bike ( G650GS ) and one not so little bloke, I would like to come down for several beers and what-not.

rossi 12 Jan 2012 21:30

:welcome::welcome:

Although I may have to clear the far end of the garden.

Chris M-C 13 Jan 2012 17:10

Hi, could you give me a bit more info on directions to the venue and also from what time on friday are we able to arrive...

Chris

rossi 13 Jan 2012 19:56

I should be back from work by 4. With a bit of luck Mark (maddog) who lives down the hill will get away from work earlier and will get the tea brewing. We'll get a couple of signs out but it is easier to find than last year.

From north of exeter the A30 to Launceston is quickest but the last 10 miles are narrow and twisty; fun in daylight but tricky in the dark with a weak headlamp. The alternative route is via the A38 past Plymouth, turning off at Liskeard. For anyone from down west take the A38 along the Glyn Valley and turn off at the top of the hill past Trago.

Destination is Minions. Look for the brown tourist "hurlers" signs. You'll find me from the car park.

Hi love to come ,but my young lady is not to keen on camping that
time of year is there room on the floor or a b+b near bye ?

Accomodation info can be found on the village website

Although not included on the B&B page the Cheesewring Hotel on the businesses page also do accomodation.

Cheesewring Hotel

Hi just contacted the Cheesewring Hotel, they have availability for the weekend 24-25 Feb. Their tariff is £30 per person per night. I was advised that they were in the process of redecorating rooms and installing new beds!

Hi Rossi, last year was great especially the green laning. Bought myself a new toy and this will be a great opportunity to try it out if you are planning a similar route this year. Count us in for sure (+2).

Mez + Anna :thumbup1: bier

rossi 2 Feb 2012 17:22

I'm sure there's room somewhere down the bottom of the garden. Ground has been pretty waterlogged recently but it is a bit firmer today (-5 last night:freezing:)

Trail ride will be pretty similar to last year although I haven't been out for a while so it might be pot luck on trail conditions. I will definitely be taking off the road biased tyres and going with knobbly front / trials rear.

Fantastic Mister Fox 2 Feb 2012 20:12

Hi Rossi,

It looks like I'm not going to make it this year, So thats one more space in your garden.

If it's as good as last year youre all in for a good one

greenmanalishi 12 Feb 2012 19:41

weather pending

Hi Rossi, if you have space for two more tents, I have managed to get time off. Diehard is finally back from Ireland after being stuck there for the best part of 10 months and he wants to come along. Weather pending and roads being passable we will be there. PM me the postcode for the little lady who lives in my satnav.

Diehard might do the ride out, I wont as riding down there is enough for me and I have road tyres. Last year was brilliant and so far it looks like this will be the only one I can attend til at least July due to prior commitments.

Thanks in advance

GM

*Touring Ted* 12 Feb 2012 22:05

Well this sucks...

I'm working that weekend and due to my new contract at work, I can't take any holidays until the middle of March :(

rossi 15 Feb 2012 12:13

further info

Well, I'm off out to recce the route for the trailride tomorrow. Not sure yet whether I will do the same / similar route to last year with the pasty stop at Lerryn or go for something completely different. Either way the level of challenge will be similar. I do have tyre levers, a bike stand and foot pump if required. I'm off to use them next.

For anyone joining the trailride it would make sense to top up on Friday evening. No need to fill up if you have a supertanker though. Who was it last year with the R85? Glad the tank wasn't full. A tytpical trail bike tank of around 10L would be plenty. If you have 990 then you might need a bit more but you know your own bike.

If you are turning off the A38 at Liskeard, follow signs for St Cleer then Minions. There is fuel in Liskeard at Morrissons and a BP station you will pass on your right a bit further on.
If you are taking the A30, there is a petrol station near the turn off at Launceston, head right at the roundabout and go under the A30 towards the town. You will find the petrol station about 1/4 mile along the road on the right. Head back to the roundabout and follow the B3254 initially signed to South Petherwin. Straight on for about 8 miles, passing through 1 X-roads on the way. Turn right at Upton Cross for Minions.
From down west, well you probably know the way. A38 Glynn Valley and turn off at the top of the hill after Trago. If you need petrol there is some in Bodmin, if you are passing through, or head down to Morrissons in Liskeard and turn off there.

Once in Minions, head for the car park on the west of the village with a brown tourist sign for The Hurlers.

Useful info -
I will have a gas bbq set up and garden furniture out.
There are no street lights and it does get dark - bring a torch.
We live at the top of a hill, it rains a lot and gets windy.
We have 2 dogs. Please be careful if you give them any food as one is allergic to wheat. The effects are not pleasant in a confined space! Otherwise they are harmless.
The garden is pretty big so there is no need to sleep on top of each other but it would be helpful to pitch the tents fairly close together. Hopefully all the tents will fit at the far end of the garden which is fenced off from the dogs. Please try to keep the dogs out of this area as it is not secure and they do escape.
There are public toilets 50m down the road, opposite the pub and the village shop.
For anyone not riding on Saturday, we are in a lovely spot to go for a walk. If the weather is bad you could always head down to Darite for the coffee morning. I think the locals were quite bemused last year at the sight of a group of bikers sitting round playing scrabble.
I will get some menus from the pub. To help them get dinner sorted on Saturday night, the plan is to give them an order earlier in the day. Make sure you get your name on the list before leaving for the trail ride.

No doubt be a few other things I remember over the next week.

rossi 16 Feb 2012 19:01

trail ride

A successful day today sorting out a route which is slightly different to last years. The first few lanes are different which means we will miss out the climb which gave some problems last year. We do those lanes on the way back so we are not missing anything. The extra lanes at the start include a bit of moorland which is good fun and while it is still challenging is less hazardous than a rocky climb. Having said that conditions were fairly dry today and nothing was particulary green or slippery. With a mostly dry forecast for the next fortnight it should be a good day. The pasty stop at Lerryn is still on the route as well.

McCrankpin 17 Feb 2012 15:03

Hi Rossi,
Thanks for all the info.
I've been following this thread for quite a while - it's been a long time since Ripley 2009. And I've now got everything arranged so I can be there.

How's the tent space looking? Still room for a small'un?

Will look forward to it.
Cheers

Rossi, how did the brownie points scoring weekend go..??? Just wondered if a hot shower after trail ride was an option like last year..?? :thumbup1:

rossi 21 Feb 2012 07:33

Weekend? It was nearly a week. Points earned :D

Not going to rule out a shower but no way will everyone get through with only 1 shower in the house. I'm sure there will be less demand for the hose pipe in the garden though :freezing:

MEZ 21 Feb 2012 20:10

cold shower

Cold hosepipe it is then, no problem after all some off us ARE hardcore adventurers and quite used to it....!!!:freezing::whistling::whistling:

Whats the body count for the trail run so far..??

rossi 21 Feb 2012 21:56

hopefully no bodies:oops2:

As for a head count, I'm still not sure exactly how many are turning up as some are checking the weather first. Not everyone is riding either, but a couple of others are coming along for the ride but not camping. Short answer is we will find out on the day. I am hoping to have Nick Palmer along - we rode the route together last week. This will give us an option to split into 2 groups, meeting for lunch, if there are a few too many for 1 group.

When you get to the Hurlers car park you will see this bronze age burial mound (thank you google earth) which is part of my garden wall. Mark or I should be around to greet you.

rossi 24 Feb 2012 23:50

Belle and co are safe and sound. We've all enjoyed a few pints down the pub and retired for the night.

Belle 25 Feb 2012 01:44

Great, thanks.

Belle 26 Feb 2012 19:43

Many thanks for a great w/e Rossi and Mrs Rossi and also for the international rescue service on Friday ( Nadine being Australian). Great to meet everybody, great riding, esp after the mist disappeared, and got back to The Smoke about two hours ago. All got numb bums but it was worth the effort of 542 miles on our C90s. :thumbup1:

Thank you Mez and PE!

I'll try and blog a few lines and post a relevant pic of the day every day, (subject to signal availaility and not being kidnapped of course) here:

enyatopbox.blogspot.com

which I will start tomorrow morning without fail. Promise. It will also go on the main scootersinthesahara.co.uk site.

And if anybody is around for the departure next Sunday from the Travelodge in Emsworth (PO10 7RB) to the docks at Portsmouth, we'd be delighted to see you. We're leaving at 0800.

Just need to find my bucket and spade then I'm all set......:Beach:

Belle 27 Feb 2012 11:08

Right, just when it was going soooooooooo well. Blog has started but can't be seen. Tecno teething problem this end, soon to be fixed with the help of an unsuspecting adolescent. Be right back..........:thumbup1:

Sorry, forgot to add in (as some of you kindly asked at the weekend) where you can donate money for the painting of murals in the kids mental hospital in Ulan Bataar.

This is where it's all gone so far: B. Sinclair - Mongolia
Barclays Bank
20-84-17
93302210

It's a separate account, goes nowhere near my money, no fees payable to donation companies etc and it means that I can withdraw money straight from this account to pay the local painter direct when I'm in UB.

And if you're wondering what I'm on about - murals, kids mental hospital, UB etc - then its all about doing some stuff with the kids who live in the mental home ( often they have nothing wrong with them but have been laballed difficult or unruly) and making their lives a bit more luxurious. At present they have nothing - no personal belongings, no books, nop music system, no posters etc, waer communal underwear and use communal toothbrushes etc. So the idea is to get a local painter to tart the place up and involve the community in the process. There is no money for anything except to run it on a shoestring. Enough of us have been to Mongolia and have been bowled over by the people, the scenery, the hospitality, but this is a section that most of us will never know about. I only know because my sister in law is Mongolian and worked with the place. :helpsmilie:

Brilliant!

What a brilliant weekend! :D

All thanks to Rossi and Mrs Rossi for making it all happen. :thumbup1:

A fantastic Saturday full of lanes (some a bit challenging, some a lot challenging!) and the weather was kind as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the pub evenings and presentations as well.

And for this rider with a leccy start. The temp repair survived but was tricky to use a couple of times. (Broken circuit between button and solenoid). :hammer:

I took just a couple of photos, here they are:

Ahhh, I wondered. If it is Mez's bike then I was riding it. I took over starting duties and rode it across the ford before claiming my bike back. No way was I going to ride that thing for long.

McCrankpin 10 Mar 2012 22:38

Starter for 1

That's no lady - that's me...
Thanks for the pictures.
If it's OK with you, will probably put them in my blog sometime.

Tackled the starter this morning. Corroded wire feeding the solenoid, it had been rubbing against a plastic cable guide, probably since new, and worn right through the insulation. Only green powder where wire should be.
http://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/...1010169112.jpg

As I looked around for a way of accessing this, nothing more than the power of my gaze made a connector drop right out of its receptacle on the main battery feed to the fuse. So the whole bike's electrics became dead.
I think I was lucky to get home from Bodmin.
There was a lot of green powder all round here.

All fixed better than new (I hope).

Will put it all back tomorrow morning as they say the sun will shine. And my right thumb has forgotten what it's there for.

All the best
Ken
