HUMM - What's it like?
I rode the HUMM in 2010 as a complete novice to this sort of event. Here are some links to my write up of the whole event in two parts.
If you have any doubts just do it - you won't regret it. Brilliant fun! Steve Nash Two parts to the report, links below:- Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness 2010 (plus part 2 & 3) - Devon TRF Group Open Forum Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness 2010 (Final Part) - Devon TRF Group Open Forum |
I'm coming...
hi, I have just booked my XT660R on HUMM 2011, and it sounds a superb bit of fun.
I am trying to get a team of XT's together...just to show the rest of you what great bikes they are! Yes, you guessed right, I have heard about the HUMM on XT660.com, and this event sounds too temping to turn down.... See you all there! Richard |
I entered HUMM for the first time last year on my own on a 400 KTM - I only met my team mate 10 minutes before the start of the event (an american who rode a 250 Yamaha 700 odd miles from Germany in one day!) - amazing experience, and to top it all we came second overall - Allied Force!
There's no pressure to race (some people just do it for the scenery and 4 course lunches) but if you're even slightly competitive you can go nuts - we did... So don't let it put you off if you don't have a team, you'll get matched up well if you're honest on your entry form. Can't wait to see you all next year - Allied Force will be back and first this time (maybe). |
Bike Transport London to The 2011 HUMM
Hi..
I am thinking of hiring a LWB transit, to transport 6 bikes and gear down to the 2011 HUMM. If i find enough takers this should be about £200 per bike, let me know if interested. Cheers Phin |
Portsmouth-Bilbao Return Ferry
I'm looking for two more to fill the cabin, departing on the 3rd July, returning 9th July...only £233 (£117 each way) per person. (Please note...this price is for booking as soon as you can, i.e. now!...the cheaper cabins tend to go first of all...).
pm me if interested. V. good price considering your alternative options of a Channel Crossing, £30 road tolls, two nights out and camping fees, petrol, knackered Knobblies and a squared-off ass....and that's just to get there! We also have the option of an outward journey Plymouth - Santander, which is 12 hours quicker, £250 each. |

Anyone else chipping in to say they are going ???? |
HI,
I'm registered for this years HUMM and was just wondering what poeple do about fuel. How do the smaller bikes cope? Do the bigger bikes have to run with full tanks at thye biggining of the day or are there plenty of places to get fuel? Sorry if this question seams a bit novice but I am a novice :helpsmilie:. Best regards Martin |
Quote:
|
Thanks Grant, that makes sense. One last question then, to make a bike road legal in Spain does it need mirrors? And as long as it is road legal in the UK it will be OK in spain?
Sorry for all the questions. Martin |
You will need at least a left hand side mirror, groups were warned about this a few years back then threatened with a €90 fine if you were seen 'mirrorless' again.
So fit a mirror! |
Thankyou for all your help. Much appreciated.
|
Hey Grant,
How many have signed up this year so far ? Ray |
Optional ADDITIONAL date for the HUMM!

See you there! |
I would love to join this event, too bad my schedule clears out at the end of July.
However, I will be visiting Barcelona by motorcycle in August and it would be a great opportunity for me to visit the Pyrenees in the same journey. Is there any place I cand find the HUMM roadbooks or routes from any of the last years? I googled it with no success. Thank you. |
Quote:
Sorry you can't make it! Maps and guide books are NOT available at all, they're exclusive to participants on the day only, sorry. They're a substantial portion of the cost of the event! Grant |
I'm so looking forward to my holidays there! I have had no holiday for 3 years...so this one should make up for all those lost ones! Roll on July...bier

Tyre choice?
Hi,
I'm travelling down to the event on my F650 dakar and was wondering if my Metzeler Tourance tyres will cope on the off-road sections or should I be thinking of changing them to more of a 50/50 tyre such as Heidenau K60? This will be first HUMM and really looking forward to it. Craig |
Quote:
The Tourances will work pretty well - similar tyres have been used for the HUMM before and worked fine! We've even had winners on similar in the over 650 class. Note that Tim, our support guy from Loco for Motos can bring tyres for you to the event, and change them out and back. You MIGHT even be able to work a deal with him for the used ones! :) Details to contact him on the HUMM page. See you there! |
Anyone have space to tkae my bike down?
Hey everyone,
Really looking forward to the HUMM this year, can't wait to get down there... Speaking of which I'm wondering if anyone has room to take my dirt bike (and a bit of kit) there and back for me? The bike is located in South London and obviously I'm willing to pay. Please let me know. Cheers, Pete |
GB Sticker
Has anyone in the past had any hasstle for not having a GB sticker? There is not really anywhere to fit one on my DRZ.
|
Quote:
I just thought that I would repost this just incase it got missed due to the upgrade. Cheers |
It's very unlikely they'll hassle you about it. However - stick one ANYWHERE - there's always someplace, even if it's under the fender - the Spanish cops would probably get a laugh out of that - since I'm sure they don't care!
And you could run into an @#$%hole. "Look like you're trying" is always my motto on this stuff. |
Quote:
We were down there with Mr Vince in 2009 and the police pulled a few of us. They told us they would fine us 90euro for not having a mirror, the same for not having the GB logo on the numberplate { its no good putting in on the panniers or top box then taking them off to go trail riding } They checked all the V5's and insurance and even looked at our tax disc. I'm not sure if they can fine you on the spot for the above , but they kept us in the layby for almost a Hour. I now have the GB sticker on my number plate and 2 mirrors, and always carry the paper work for the bike with me. Have Fun Dazzer |
Thanks for your replies guys.
Much appreciated. |
Tyres
Hi all
Heading down from Ireland and looking for a fresh set of tyres when we get there. I have tried to contact LocoForMotos via email but haven’t got a reply. Anybody got any other options or room in a van (travelling from Ireland) for a couple of sets of tyres. Thanks John |
John, I'm sure Tim will get back to you asap - and he will be able to supply tires - he's probably on a tour at the moment. I talked with him a week or so ago, and all is good.

At the very top of every HU page it says:
Here's your LAST chance EVER to ride the Pyrenees HUMM Does that mean there won't be a HUMM next year? Just curious... Sadly, we won't be there, as we have to fly back to Thailand and NZ soon after. Sorry about writing all in bold. There is a bug in the editor. I pasted the 2nd line in here and now the bold button does nothing! |

How about Morocco? :mchappy: Go into code view - top right of the grey box and you can see an a/a - easy if you know html. |

Thanks again John |

Only three weks to go now. Can't wait. :D I guess we will be getting the maps sent out soon.
There has been snow in the alps. Anyone know what the weather has been doing where we are going? |
Quote:
|
Nope, sorry for any confusion, but the maps will be handed out AT the event! That decision was made after last year, when comments were made about a few people getting down early and pre-riding the trails. That didn't seem fair to us, so no maps in advance - in fact, no one even knows what map we'll be using! :)
I couldn't figure out why you thought we'd be sending the maps out in advance, and then found that we hadn't corrected the page in one spot - I did get it corrected on another place though, so I had it half right - or half a$%#d as usual, sorry. :oops2: It is fixed now :) Importantly, EVERYONE will be on the same footing, and no one will be able to check out the trails early. Remember to come prepared with magnifying glasses - one for the prep session, and one for on the trails, and also fine markers/highlighters - as one team found out last year, the thick dark marker they brought to mark the trails with obliterated all the detail! A highlighter would be my choice, in several colours. I can't wait to get down there myself, and we look forward to seeing you all! :scooter: |
That sounds like a very sensible Plan. Only mentioned because it was what I had read and was getting excited.
Is there a reason why the HUMM is moving from Spain next year? All the best and I hope everyone has a safe and trouble free journey down. |

thank you |

Im guessing this means theres nothing due in the post and everything will be provided at the venue/event? (Which is good as its one less thing for me to forget!) Steve |
Whilst im posting too much id like offer our backup services for anyone planning to bike it the whole way. Weve decided to cheat this year and taking the van instead and happy to help out if anyone gets stuck on route. Not sure how much space well have but we should be able to help out some how.
Our route is not set in stone but weve got the chunnel booked for 8am saturday morning and planning on travelling south via main routes over 2 days (saturday / sunday and maybe into monday). I dont really want to post my mobile number here so if anyone wants it just in case send me a PM (ill also check the forums on the way) :) Steve PS If you see a blue/grey Vivaro with a HU sticker on give us a wave  PPS Grant can you post us some stickers pls?! Weve some how lost all of ours and was hoping to get some with the maps lol.. |

Which is bad as it means I have to remember it now! :blushing: |

Stickers - none were ever sent with the maps, so that was a hopeless hope. But if you're coming to Ripley it's easy - if not, trickier - order on the store and we'll get them out to you from Ripley. BUT send an email with your order to let us know so we don't send them slow boat from Canada! And of course you'll get some at the HUMM :) Grant |
Here's the basics:
1. you have to be able to READ and MARK maps to plan where you're going. 2. Measuring how far it is might be nice. 3. A method of KNOWING where you're going EASILY will be a big help on the trail! 4. Correcting and figuring out what the #^^$# you were thinking back at the planning stage while on the trail could be useful! 5. READING the map on the trail will be CRITICAL. 6. Knowing what direction you're GOING might be handy! 7. Keeping your map dry and easy to access / read is useful. Tip - one map you will work from is a full size map REDUCED to A4 approximately! IT has the points marked on it! YOU have to put those marks on the BIG map you will carry on the trail. High magnification will make that easier. And if all else fails, the Spanish long lunch and siesta solves all problems:) |
Quote:
Any plans to sell the trails on DVD or as a Road Book after this year's event? |
Quote:
Details to come... Trail information - sorry, we can't - we pay Austin and Lois 50 quid per rider for the rights to use their trail information, (plus the cost of the books and maps) - so we can't sell it on, and I'm sure they won't either. But Morocco is looking good! :) See us at Ripley! |
Hi
Just returned from the 'secret trip' to trail ride in Oliana and have stopped as usual at Llavorsi, doing a few trails around here (especially the one to Andorra!............(for the benefit of smokers!) and camping Riberies has had a shower block refurb and an open outside dining area attached, for those that have not been to the campsite before, there is a nice onsite friendly bar that also does food, this is probably one of the best campsites I have used in Spain for the atmosphere and wi-fi (password; llavorsi2011). Warning; Make sure you have at least one mirror fitted to your bike, some cops insist on 2,as my mate found out en route from Oliana, lights on at all times on the road and make sure your number plate is clean upon joining a road after a trail, my mate and I both got a 'threat' of a €200 fine. Have a good one and BTW we are going white water rafting in the morning! |
Riding to Llavorsi....
Leaving London W4 at 07:30am on Sat 2nd July and heading to Llavorsi, Spain on 1200GSA. Will likely take the quickest route across the pond (i.e the tunnel). Hoping to get as far as Limoges for the night, and to Llavorsi Sun beer o'clock. Any one fancy a ride down?
Mike. |
Spain is one of those countries where a reflective vest is compulsory for pedestrians on main roads and when exiting a car it must be worn.
Does anyone know if this applies to motorcycles ? I ask as I recently heard of a biker stoppped by the police who dismounted and was then fined for not having one on having then become a pedestrian! (It could of course be rubbish) My recent experience of Spanish police was not good. Whilst staying on a campsite in Spain last December (La Manga), all the british cyclists that rode into town on their pushbikes were fined for not wearing a cycle helmet on a main road outside the town limits. |
Hi all
Heading off on ferry from Rosslare Thursday evening (HP2 and 1150GSA)arriving Cherbourg 4.30 Friday afternoon on to Angers Friday night :sleep1:. Then on to the Pyrenees for a few days before the event:mchappy: . Anybody else heading from this direction? Regards “The Green Boxers” beerbeerbeer |
Plymouth sailing
Hi,
Anyone getting the Plymouth to Santander on Sunday the 3rd? Give me a shout if you fancy a bier or riding to Llavorsi together. Cheers Craig |

Partnered up with "Richardsracingmad". We are stopping at a B & B halfway there and back. |

There are 3 of us getting on the Plymouth sailing on Sunday, 1 guy on KTM and another on a beat up XTZ750 and me on my V Strom, if you fancy meeting up and riding down to Llavorsi on Monday let me know. Deb |

The answer is, Yes, every motorist has to weat a reflective jacket when s/he is away from their vehicle on the 'highway' (carretera). And in principle this means that all motorcyclists should have this item available for use - but I've never , ever heard of a biker doing this! Ride well, be nice to the Guardia Civil - by and large they're are pretty nice to you! Not that I do anythnbg illegal like riding through restricted zones, oh no no no! Regs Simon :Beach: |
According to the AA, foreign motorcyclists won't be fined for not having the reflective jacket.
|
Just got back...
Just got back from the HUMM (well, shower and food first) and it was an excellent one. Shame it will never be held in Spain again, then again, Morocco should be nice and I almost definitely will attend.
One thing worth noting: when it says on the A3 map: 'dangerous junction', they really mean it. Actually, the junction itself wasn't nearly as dangerous as the trail itself. It started off quite steeply. After a while you think: this surely must be it. After a few times thinking the same it finally leveled a bit. I learnt later the incline was about 1 km and yes, I believe it. Grant and Susan: again, thanks for an excellent event and I will hopefully see you next year. StrangePete |
I think I have just answered my question re the reflective jackets.
I had a rear flat on the Spanish motorway near Bilbao. :helpsmilie: A repair plug popped out and went flat immediately. Anyway, whilst fixing the tyre I was extremely glad I had my reflective with me. Nuff said..... |
:offtopic:
In Sweden there is currently a project going with the Swedish bikers asssociation (SMC) and one of the insurance companies. Apparently 9 out of 10 accidents involving collisions between motorbikes and cars are as a result of the driver in the car not observing the bike in time. So they send you a free reflective vest to wear when you ride for 2011 and then they will evaluate what the biker has experienced, if he/she can sense any improvement in other drivers behaviour. And to see if it has any impact on these kind of acccidents. I always wear one while riding, it´s a cheap life-prolonger. On topic: I would very much to team up with someone for HUMM 2012! Currently riding a 1986 XT600Z Ténéré (81000kms). |
