HU California: ride planning!

Hey folks,

I will be attending the HU meeting in CA, but I live in Oregon. I volunteered to help with the day ride planning, and we are looking for suggestions for both pavement and dual-sport rides (avoiding single track, if possible)

Any ideas out there?

In case you did not know, here is the location of base camp:

Lost Coast ride options

I've not been to the area, but from my route planning and research, it appears some good ride options from the traveler's meeting would be:

- Petrolia to Ferndale along Mattole Rd & back, lunch in Ferndale

- Petrolia to Humbolt State Redwoods & back, bag lunch in the park

- Petrolia to Usal beach (dirt roads) & back, lunch in Shelter Cove

I'm planning on coming in from the south, and up Usal Rd. So will have updated road conditions (assuming I don't get stuck in the muck myself).

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info. About Usal Rd. I am interested. I was gonna "sprint" from Eugene to try to ride it myself, so I am glad you may do that. What day/time do you plan to arrive onsite?

ride in to Petrolia

I expect to be at the Grange around 5pm or so, likely Thursday. Right now there's a chance I may be able to leave a day early on Wednesday, and if that works out, will be in that area likely camping at Mattole beach around that same time.

Usal Rd got rain a week ago, and parts don't dry out quickly. So hoping if I go Thursday to ride it with at least one other person, for both safety and fun. If I end up going early alone, hopefully others will be following later and can help me unstuck myself if things go badly. (there's no cell coverage there)

Look forward to meeting you there.

Mike

Sounds good Mike.

Considering the potential conditions, do you think I can take my R12GS in there?
