HU Barrancas del Cobre Rally

Only 12 weeks to go, time to start making some plans.

Last year a few paople went to the west coast after the rally, following Batopilas Canyon. Anyone know anything about that route? On the map, it looks like there would be a couple of river crossings. Bridges? I've been as far as Satevo, but no further.

I know there is a road that goes over the mountain range from Batopilas to Urique. Anyone got any info on that route? I was thinking it might be a good over night trip to go from Creel to Batopilas, stay overnight, then go to Urique and back to Creel.

Grant, any semi organized rides along these lines this year? I could either get to the rally a couple days early or stay a couple days late, depending on what other people are doing.

I will be on a KLR 650 and my riding partner will be on an XR 650, so we will be fairly dirt worthy, especially if we do a loop and leave our luggage in Creel.

Any input is welcome.

I will be travelling down to the meeting from NYC. I am also thinking of taking a Jimmy Lewis off road class before heading down to Mex. Anyone else interested.

Andy, sorry I missed your post - I was at the BMWMOA rally.

Nothing major planned - yet. If you're interested in doing some of the organising we can certainly post it on the meeting page as in the planning stages and link to here, and see what we can put together.

The intention behind the extra day - Thursday - is it gives two good days of riding before the meeting starts, and we are working on more to do at the campsite Saturday such as seminars etc. Of course lots of people want to do a variety of rides after the meeting too.

Jsherm, I'm working on something you might be interested in for the meeting. Keep an eye here and on the meeting page before you book anything. No promises, but... http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif

See you all there!

I've been off line myself for awhile, as I have just moved. Not as good an excuse as being at a motorcycle rally, but it will have to do. It now looks as if 2 other guys from the San Antonio area will be going to the meeting, and we may be meeting up with another Horizonista in West Texas on the way out, so I'm not going to actively try to organize any more than that, as I think that's all the bikes you can keep together anyway. Always willing to listen to suggestions though.

Also still interested on any info people may have on the route from Batopilas to Urique. To be more specific, what I am really wondering is if tall street gearing and street oriented dual sport tires are OK for this road. I've done the road to Batopilas, from Creel, and would not bother putting knobs on for that, to give you some sort of reference.

Andy,

I'm ready to go now. Have you decided when and where I should meet you guys?? I'll be staying at a friends house in Alpine before the rally so am flexible to your meeting times.

Take care,

John
