Grant,

As of today I'm planing on coming to the Copper Canyon ride. For those that want to hook up and ride along (as I do) I'll be leaving from the Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX area. Since I will be retired by that time my schedule will be flexible and I can accomodate others schedules. I speak very little Spanish but have ridden in the area before. Would like to hook up with someone that does speak the language and also knows the area.

Will be waiting for more details (meeting places, where to stay, etc.) as they become available.

Take care,

John

Kurt 27 Aug 2003 20:44

I'm leaving Chicago sometime early October and headed down through Houston probably then Matamoros then toward Cuernavaca (South of Mexico City). After that I'll be headed up to Creel. Anyone interested?

Kurt

DigitalTavern 31 Aug 2003 11:17

Looks like I'll try to make the copper canyon gig. I'll be leaving Southern California around 26th or 27th and after rally heading back. If anyone wants to hook up and meet post a note here...

rocket ron 31 Aug 2003 14:38

Digitaltavern,

Sound like a possibility. We would be leaving from San Diego. Would like to take the ferry from the mainland to La Paz on the way back.

John & All Others (but Digital Tavern & K7, guess who I am??)

I'll be leaving Western Louisiana on 29 Oct and crossing at Ojinaga, Chihuahua on the morning of 30 Oct. I speak very fluent Spanish and just returned from eastern Mexico this past July. I rode down to Veracruz on a '02 BMW Paris Dakar 650. I'm 34 but my career has made me significantly more responsible than my average peer so please don't let an age discrepancy alter your perception of compatibility. Would seem to make sense to link-up somewhere stateside (San Antonio??)to cross the border. If you're unfamiliar with the process I can give you some well-documented references to read (plenty here already) and offer up my personal experience FWIW. BTW, best maps are Michelin maps IMO.

I should be joining the HU soon (01 Oct) so all my contact data will eventually show up.

Rocket Ron, Repo4sale and all others going to Copper Canyon from California - I've sent emails to both of you and look forward to the journey. Coming back through Baja sounds great. My schedule is open and flexible. Let's ink a final plan -- even meet in Orange County prior to departure. Sorry for the delay in response, I've been in Wyoming and Utah riding. Check out the photo albums here and here.

Hey Kitmo... just saw this post. Based on your personality, 34 is no problemo for me. Heck, I was 34 once... briefly. :-)

What the heck does Kitmo mean? I do know what FIGMO and FUBAR means but not Kitmo. Guess I'm not that much in the know.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Kermit 23 Sep 2003 08:36

I'm planing to come down to the meeting from San Francisco. Currently I'm thinking of making my way south via AZ (border crossing at Noagles), and back north via Baja (depending on the weather).

Dates for my trip are as follows:

10/25 leave SF, get ASAP to the border. Take it easy in Mexico, stopping at the sites and beaches along the way, arriving in Creel around 10/30 or 10/31.

11/8 be back in SF. I'm thinking of taking the ferry from Guaymas to Santa Rosalia rather then going all the way down south to La Paz.

I'm not sure if this is compatible with anyone elses schedule, but if you're heading the same way during these days, it would be fun to meet up.

Mark

k7lro 25 Sep 2003 01:49

BTW, we can accommodate one traveler (& spouse if necessary) on Wednesday night, Oct. 29th. We don't run no B&B and you may have to settle for pizza but the price is right....free.

The next morning, I anticipate our intrepid group of travelers meeting for breakfast and then hitting the road.

I'm posting this offer on the unlimited board & it's first-come, first-served so to speak.

Contact me off-line at the address noted in my profile. I can't check that address until this evening but don't worry. I'll get back to you ASAP.

k7lro 25 Sep 2003 01:53

Stupid-stupid-stupid or, in the spirit of our distination, estúpido-estúpido-estúpido.

For those who don't know me, I live on the south side of Phoenix AZ just off of I-10 and Pecos Rd. Very, very easy to find.

We'll take the Nogales route towards Hermosillo and then head towards the east.

DigitalTavern 25 Sep 2003 03:07

Hey Kermit and others: heading down from Southern California to Calexico on the 27th or 28th then toward Hermosillo and east. Returning via Baja on either the ferry from Guaymas or Topolobampo pending timing and schedules for those traveling. So far me and Repo4Sale are in the group with a couple from San Diego as a possibility. Taking it easy, doing sites and getting into Creel around the 30th. Contact me here -- perhaps we might meet up with other travelers coming from Nogales in Hermosillo? It's all very flexible at this point.

Hey, howdy, hey all ya folks out there in Moto-Travel Land!

RRRRRRRRRRRRRitmo with an 'r' or 'R'.

I'm a drummer so I picked the spanish word for rhythm here as it relates to my many previous travels to Mexico. I am very excited about participating in the HUBB to share serious and insightful discussion of safe motorcycle randonees.

About myself...yep, I'm a drummer. But I've been down lately for maintenance. I recently had my little red vest re-sewn. And my little marching boots needed to be re-soled. My two little cymbals needed some tuning so I had to unglue them from my little paws and my Fez was getting a little frayed so that went to the haberdasher as well. Lastly, it sure was cold but I had my fur taken to the dry cleaners for some spot cleaning. Oops, almost forgot! I had my little curly tail re-curled for the big show comin' up.

Yep, don't let anybody fool ya...bein' a professional wind-up, cymbal-clappin' monkey doll is tough work and it takes a lot of personal sacrifice.

But in the end, it's the kind of work that allows me to pursue the demanding sport of motorrad as a disciplined and no-nonsense aficionado.

k7lro 26 Sep 2003 00:22

Interesting.... isn't this around the time period of El Día de los Muertos? That could be bad news for Ritmo and his plans to be seen in public during those celebrations.

Ike Maxwell 1 Oct 2003 10:03

Ritmo, I know who you are!

Riding Partner needed...
Okay, so I'm brand new to this BB posting reply stuff, I mistakenly placed the below message as a new topic, and feared that no one would find it, so I'm copying back to this discussion thread. Sorry for the junk.

Thanks, David "hope I find a partner" Bosley,

Hola,
I am back to MC riding after 15 years of being without. Considering riding to the HU meet in Copper Canyon, Mexico on my new '03 Tiger.
No riding partner yet, interested in meeting up with someone(okay, anyone!), as the limits of my Spanish is probably to order too many cervesas, and/or get into big trouble.
Leaving from Denver, headed south on I-25 to Albuquerque, NM, then hope to not "take the wrong turn in Albuquerque.." to quote Bugs Bunny.
Anyone care to take a "newbie" distance rider under a proverbial wing??? I've never left the states, and probably too nervous to attempt this completely on my own.
Please reply if you might be able to travel together.

diablito 5 Oct 2003 22:51

Hello to everybody from Gibsons,BC,Canada!
A newbie here and just found out about this BB. I'm going to the national HOG rally in Morelia, Michoacan for Oct.24,24,26 and will be returning by way of the festivities in CC. I'm travelling solo, second time driving in Mexico, first time on the bike. Is anybody coming to this event from the south? Grant has given me some ideas on a route. Hey Ritmo, como estas? Hablo espanol un poquito. Lo he estudiado por unos pocos anos y por un mes en GDL. Any info you can supply is appreciated, and anybody wishing to share accomodation in Creel (one of those cabins looks cool!) I'm a cleancut, non-smoking friendly guy. I'm leaving Vancouver,BC on Oct.8 with the bike in the truck and unloading it in San Diego for 38 days of travel in the lower US and Mexico. Sure wish I'd known about this BB sooner but I'll be checking on the Net during my travels.
See you all there! Gord

scorpion 9 Oct 2003 08:13

Hi I'm totally new to all this moto travel stuff and I'm 90% sure of headin' down to ol'Mehico. I've driven extensively thoughout mex in various contraptions, so I lively jaunt down to Creel shouldnt be a problem, barring any new bike paperwork issues and properly kitting out my bike before then. I plan on leaving SoCal 26-27th and Heading back by 2-3rd. I'd like to hook up with other riders anywhere from TJ, to Nogalas.

cheers

k7lro 10 Oct 2003 04:32

We'll cross the border at Nogales on the 30th. Contact me directly by email and we'll try to figure out where to hook up.

If you want to meet us in Phoenix, tentative plans are to meet for breakfast at the IHOP at Ray Road and I-10 at 7 AM.

It appears that there will be 3-4 of us on F650, an older GS and other bikes TBD.

scorpion 12 Oct 2003 03:32

You planning on going from Phoenix>Nogales>Hermosillo>XCreel all in one go?

How far is that? (hours/km)

:: dave

k7lro 13 Oct 2003 08:52

PHX to Nogales is about 180 miles. Hermosillo is about 170 miles from Nogales. Creel is about 300 miles from Hermosillo according to a hi-level map at http://www.vmcoppercanyon.com/

Now, 300 miles in the US is quite different than 300 miles in Mexico after we leave Hermsillo.

Our current plan is to get through Hermosillo and then stop for the night after that. We hope to arrive in Creel in mid-to-early afternoon on Friday... good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise. :-)

Grant Johnson 13 Oct 2003 11:36

Try and get there early Friday at the latest - there will be lots of people to talk to all day Friday and Saturday - usually people who arrive late Friday to these meetings feel "they've missed out".

Lots of info on things to see and do at Creel as well, and our organised rideouts to start off with.

Biggest problem is squeezing it all in! Next year we'll probably go for 3 days, starting thursday night!

cruisingmale 21 Oct 2003 04:07

In the body of this post is a question---I have a time constraint on back end of meeting. I must be in Annapolis, MD by Nov 5. I know the limits of my KLR650 and myself since I just completed 12,000 miles in 54 days this Aug/Sept on it. On the KLR, the 2200 mile trip to MD will be too much for me to do in three days. However, I can use my Concours with no problem.

The question is--will the Connie be okay on the Copper Canyon destination roads (no side trips). My origin is Colorado Springs, CO. I could also fly out of Dallas if I used the KLR if I had a place to keep it for about four weeks -- any offers?. I hope to meet you all in two weeks. Mike

I'm coming from socal, but plan on crossing Nogales on wed AM. I would like to go with others on Thurs but I have to be back by Monday night and I dont want to rush on the way back esp. on mexican roads. To get there on Fri evening and then leave on Sunday AM doesn't sound so fun. On the other hand, prior commitments may have me to riding with you on thursday AM in the end, I'm not exactly sure yet.

How's that for a non-specific commitment?

dave

mayberryrf 21 Oct 2003 09:49

My wife and I are planning on making the CC trip, coming on our KLR650 from Central Florida, about 2,000 miles, more or less.
We are planning on spending the night at the Three Palms Inn (???) in Presidio, TX, on Monday, the 27th, hopefully crossing over the border early Tuesday morning, and making it on to Creel late Tuesday afternoon.
Is this a realistic time frame and will it be safe if we are not able to hook up with anyone from the border on into Creel?
Any last minute advise as to this last leg would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Grant Johnson 21 Oct 2003 11:16

Safe - absolutely - assuming you don't do something supremely dumb you wouldn't do in your home town - in other words, not particularly more dangerous than home. As usual, pay attention, smile and be friendly. You'll be fine! Right near the border is always the somewhat dodgier part, once you're a few miles down the road it's very safe. You'll find people very friendly once you get away from the border towns.

As for distance, that's around 500km / 300 miles - perhaps a bit much with a border crossing and insurance to get as well. Remeber your safe cruising speed will be much lower than in the US. Cross early, ride hard and you might make it fine, but be prepared to stop overnight en route. There's lots of places to stay on the way.

Chihuahua, Cuauhtemoc, possibly La Junta, and San Juanito and more should all have somewhere to stay if needed.

Relax and enjoy a great ride! Lots of time.

Grant,
We plan on getting our insurance before we go from Sanborns so we will not need to get that at the border. I have emailed the Hotel Villa Mexicana about an "A" cabin, but I need to let them know our date of arrival. We plan to get to Presidio from Ozona, TX (259 miles) as early as possible on Monday, Oct 27, probably mid afternoon, then take care of as much red tape as we can before the actual crossing Tuesday morning, again as early as possible.
I guess the best place to plan to stop before Creel would be Chihuahua, but I need to let Hotel Villa Mexicana know my arrival date. What do you suggest. If we leave at the crack of dawn from Ozona will be able to get to Presidio in time to get all done for a quick border crossing Tuesday morning, and make it on to Creel that night???
Cheers!

mayberryrf 21 Oct 2003 21:27

Also, we will be leaving here early Thursday morning, Oct 23rd, for the trip.

Planning on doing as many clicks as possible on thursday depending on conditions.

If all goes to plan, we'll leave PHX at 7 AM and arrive Nogales at 10 AM +/-. I'm not that famaliar enough to recommend a meeting place. The best idea might be to sit on an overpass along the way based on the timing and wait for us.

I'll send you a note with another suggestion.

Ibarra Bros. Younger half here..

Will be spending the night in Presidio on
Tuesday 28, crossing over to Ojinaga, and down to Creel early Wednesday 29 morning.

Being a native Mexican, needless to say I know the language, the culture and all do's and don'ts that come with it.

Would very much enjoy some company riding down to Creel, if anyone cares to join, we can agree to meet somewhere in Presidio close to the bridge, around 7:00 am and just
ride on down into paradise...

Simon Kennedy 27 Oct 2003 03:37

A suggestion and guide for getting to Copper Canyon.

CROSS AT PRESIDIO, TX
It’s a small easy crossing, with all the offices close to one another. Open 24hrs (but not the insurance offices). Fine scenery on both side of the border. Remember to bring your vehicle ownership papers with you. After immigration there are three vehicle procedures: 1). Buy a temporary import permit. They give you a nice silver sticker to put inside your windscreen in return. 2).They take your credit card number. If you don’t leave with your bike within the allotted time, then they take money off this card. 3).Buy vehicle insurance. Available on the Mexican side at about 3.40USD per day. All the outlets seem to be about the same price. Hotels are along the same road and all seem overpriced. There are banks in the center of town with ATMs.

HIGHWAY 16 to CHIHUAHUA
Pleasant, fastish ride. There is a vehicle checkpoint along the road to ensure that you got all your papers at the border. Two lane becomes a fast four lane divided highway. Chihuahua hasn’t a great deal to offer, but is fine as an overnight stop. We stayed at the Hotel Reforma on Vitoria: N.28 degrees, 38.083’; W.106 degrees, 04.676’. Basic, (12USD), with an internal courtyard for the bike. It’s a short walk from western fast food outlets on the mall the other side of a very nice cathedral.

CHIHUAHUA to CREEL
It is perfectly possible to ride from the border to Creel in one long day. Four-lane divided highway 16 continues SW from Chihuahua. Beyond General Trias you will have to pay to stay on it. (For the non-toll alternative look for the “Cuauhtemoc libre” signs. It takes you on a longish detour through some fine hill country on a twisty small two-laner.) After Cuauhtemoc look for “La Juanta, Highway 16” signs to get you on the right road. The route to Creel is well indicated from hereon. We stayed in Margarita, (friendly 24USD breakfast included) which is right on the town square in the center across the road from the church: N.27 degrees, 45.192’; W.107 degrees, 38.042’. It is 2300 metres above sea level here, so the evenings can be chilly.

Ibarra 27 Oct 2003 08:16

Running late !
Mechanical gremlins set me back on day...
Instead of reaching the border town on Tuesday the 28th, I will get to Presidio on
Wednesday the 29th, and will be crossing on to Ojinaga on Thursday morning.
Riding Black GS Adv, with multiple Mexican
Flag patches.

Nos vemos en Creel...
Gerardo.

Algomas 28 Oct 2003 13:18

mayberryrf 10 Nov 2003 06:27

Thanks to all for a great event!! Karen and I rented a truck and headed down "the road" to Batopilas on Monday. Only problem was sweating bullets about meeting vehicle coming in opposite direction on the 40 mile scenic trip down and back. All went ok until headed out on Tuesday morning . . met "the bus" as it was coming down and we were headed up the last "impassible" climb out of the canyon. No way was I backing up 100 yds plus for a pull off. Bus only had to back up about 20 yds and we were able to pass. Otherwise, we would still be there.
Now in Covington, LA for Sunday night. Headed to Pensecola tomorrow for a day or two on the beach, depending on the weather. Karen deserves a treat to say the least. KLR has done great--will be about 4200 miles by the time we get back to Inverness.
Give us a holler if in Central Fl in the winter or western NC in the summer!
Cheers!

I left Creel on Sunday to hike the falls at Basaseachic. I passed three riders on their way to the same place on the dirt road from San Juanito. Juan Carlos, Micky and another rider whose name I don't know. I waited at the trail head for a while, then set out on the trail. I never saw them again. What happened to you guys? The hike to the bottom of the falls was spectacular. Next time, I want to find the Piedra Volada falls. Here is a link to some photos. http://home.comcast.net/~gdavis5449/...tos.html-.html

This thread is a year old now.

Is there any current thread for the
upcoming 2004 Copper Canyon meeting?

Anyone out there?

I have some ferry questions and it would be nice to see what kind of turnout to expect down there. I know there are a bunch of folks from the ADvrider board
going, Deutsch? Francias? Espanol?

Amazingly quiet here to your point. There's a ton of activitiy over at http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...7&page=1&pp=15 which is the advrider site.

There's a huge crowd of riders headed down that have posted there. I'm not sure why it's so quiet here though.

Re the cabins at the KOA: great deals have been obtained... see the main page for more info.

I just spoke to Fernando at the KOA. The two main contacts are Eduardo and Fernando and the others speak limited English. Laura is a good contact based on 'gasrider's comments.

Here's the current availability left:

..............................Thursday.........Fri day/Saturday
Type A..........................4.....................2
Type B..........................8.....................8
Type E..........................2.....................1

Plus, there are two Suites for the BMW-rich-guys.

Again, the contact info is as follows:

Toll Free From USA: 1-888-6102095
From México: 01-800-710-6422

You can probably find a cheap room in town but at $20 per body, you can stay at the main location. Either way, it's all good right?!

I am planning on making the Copper Canyon trip. I live in Tucson, Az. I will probably leave on Oct. 13 early in the morning. I am not sure what my route might be. I might try the Douglas border entry and ride to Chihuaha (spellin might be wrong). I have been to Mexico many times (Guaymas/San Carlos) and would like to avoid Hermesillo. But if it's a lot quicker that route, I may bite the bullet and go through Hermesillo anyway. So far I am going alone. Anyone going through Tucson at the same time, I would be interested in riding with them.
