Canada West 2012 HU Travellers Meeting, Nakusp, BC, August 23-26, 2012

Canada West, Nakusp, BC. August 23-26, 2012

Full details and Registration open now!

If you haven't been to Nakusp, you owe it to yourself to go - the scenery is spectacular, the roads are stunning, (you WILL see wild animals from the road) and I can guarantee a great time! :mchappy:

Over the weekend last year we had around 18 presenters putting on 22 shows! Check out the range of topics here.

We are also now accepting applications from presenters for putting on a show, it can be on any bike related travelling topic. Last year we had our most diverse range of topics ever, with some fantastic shows and inspiring talks. To help planning the event we need your application forms in early please!

For some more ideas on what YOU COULD present, see the UK Meeting.

We are also looking for volunteers as usual! We had an excellent crew last year doing a range of activities. It takes help from volunteers to put on the meeting and this year we'll need a few more. When you register for the event you'll have an opportunity to volunteer, and we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd help out for just a few hours. It's a GREAT way to meet people too!

We look forward to seeing you there! :mchappy:

Hi Grant,

as you know I'm riding the Americas south to north since Sept 2010 and plan to reach Alaska early July 2012. I think I should be at the BC meeting if all goes like planned. Alas, there are to many "ifs" at this point of time, so I don't feel like registering until a couple of months before.

Anyway, if i make it I could do a slide show. Either about the current trip or about earlier rides in Eastern Europe or SE-Asia.

Cheers, Frank
p.s. just spend 3 weeks in Lima, Peru waiting for a new rear shock. Got it yesterday, on the road again tomorrow. :scooter:

ok well the next meeting is just around the corner, I'm going to be riding from Victoria, anyone else wanting to ride up together? i don't know ANYONE and it would be nice to meet a few people before i get there

Scrabblebiker 4 Jul 2012 01:01

I'll be riding from Victoria as well. Riding on Thursday and Friday and back on Sunday and Monday. I'll be attempting to take as many logging roads as possible. If that interests you PM me. There is also an off chance that my partner will join me, in which case the logging roads are nixed and it'll be slow riding.

Vancouver Island to Nakusp H/U rally....

Michelle and Cody,
I am currently trapped on Gabriola Island, house sitting for the summer.

My wife is in Victoria, trying to sell our house in Saanich, and she will get up to Gabriola Monday Aug 20th. This will free me up for a couple of weeks of riding.

I was planning on leaving the Island Wed/22, spending Wed in Vancouver doing some shopping, spending Wed night in Van, then getting away early Thurs Am and head to Nakusp. I want to do some volunteering at the Rally, so would like to get there by Thurs evening before dark [ and get a decent camp site? ]. The ride on the hiway through Vernon is a BTDT deal for me, so this time I would prefer to do some back roads, or take a different route [ maybe even some gravel ] as long as I get to Nakusp before dark Thurs PM.

I am riding a well set up Vstrom 100, and just put a set of Heidenau dual sport tires on it, so am looking forward to some back roads. I also have the BC and Wshington DESTINATION HIGHWAYS guide books, so I am willing to do a bit of "exploring". If the time is too tight to make it to Nakusp by Thurs evening on back roads, I can ride some gravel/dirt during the rally, and maybe even be talked into taking the LONG way back to the island ... Like South to the US, and back through the Cascades. Some great rides just South of the border. Or maybe East to Saskatoon, to visit my old home town.

I have to be back by Aug 30th, but other than that I'm free to ride.
Let me know if we can ride together on the way up, or maybe during the rally, or later?

PS: I usually ride with the BMW crowd, and there should be a strong Victoria presence from the VIC BMW people at the Nakusp H/U rally, although most of them are heading to Nakusp a week early for the BMW meeting.

Hey Lazy One,

Of all the places to be "trapped" Gabriola ain't so bad :-)

Nakusp is about 650km's from the Vancouver area via the most direct route. So exploring back roads and gravel roads would make for a very long day if you're doing it all in one day. I usually stick to the main highways if I only have a day and won't even attempt detours via logging roads unless I have more than one day available.

Since I made my last post there's been a new wrinkle in my work situation and I'm finding myself laid off and back on the union dispatch list. So if I get dispatched again to a new employer it would be somewhat difficult to get an extra long weekend right after starting a new job. So it's all up in the air for me until the very last minute. In any event, I would most likely not be able to ride according to your schedule anyway. But maybe it'll work on the way back, if I end up going in the first place.

OK fine ...

IF I can get my wife on Gabriola on Monday, I might even push forward a day, and plan on arriving in Nakusp on WED instead of Thurs.

I don't mind riding to Nakusp alone, and because my after the event time is open, perhaps doing some spontaneous group rides to ?wherever? on the way back.

Keep me in the loop,

Riding to Nakusp

I'm riding from Anacortes, WA to Nakusp to the HUBB meeting, looking at the forest service road north out of Grand Forks BC to the Needles-Fauquier Ferry...(N Fork Road and Burrell Cr FSR).

Maybe meet up in Grand Forks for that leg? Be great to meet some HUBB folks on the way.

I'll probably overnight in Grand Forks on Wednesday the 22nd, with morning departure for Nakusp, but nothing's really sorted out yet. On a R1200GSA.

I quote from the Destination Highways re DH41 ...

"If we lived in Grand forks, the first thing we would do ... is clear the stones off this road."

If it works out for me, I may just take DH 41,
or else take # 3 to Castlegar, and # 6 to Nelson/New Denver.

Keep the shiny side up,
