Canada West 2010, Ninth Annual HU Travellers Meeting Open now

Canada West, Nakusp, BC. August 12-15.

Full details and Registration open now!

We will both be there! The date for this event has CHANGED, so we can both make it.

If you haven't been to Nakusp, you owe it to yourself to go - the scenery is spectacular, the roads are stunning, (you WILL see wild animals from the road) and I can guarantee a great time! :mchappy:

Mollygrubber 14 Feb 2010 00:50

Are you going to have a schedule of events for the weekend?
Thank you !

Grant Johnson 14 Feb 2010 14:02

We do have an approximate schedule of how the event goes on the registration page, but not the presenters schedule.

A detailed presentation schedule is impossible unfortunately - we rely completely on volunteer presenters, and they have a bad habit of not planning a year in advance so we can get them on the schedule! ;) Instead, as they come in, we post them up, and a day or two before the event we get an approximate schedule worked out, but it's never locked in stone until we actually see the whites of their eyes. We've tried for years to get it better, but given the nature of motorcycle travellers, that's the best we can do, so we make no promises! Go with the flow and have fun! :)

see you there!

Grant

Road Hog 20 Feb 2010 00:13

Grant
As I was bumbling around this year trying to update my travel blog I was thinking that the ideal presentation at any HU meeting would be on how the tstories blog works and how to use it well. I am sure that I could have done a better job of it but was not sure how it all worked. So I will make you a deal, you do a presentation on the how to of the blog and I will do one on my "Great Escape".

See you at Can W
Bob Thode:scooter:

Grant Johnson 21 Feb 2010 00:39

Done! Now you're committed :)

(On one condition - that we have an internet connection - it can't be done without a live connection as the software only runs on the server, so hopefully there's a wifi connection there.)

See you there, Grant

Ekke 15 Apr 2010 03:00

No Wi-Fi

Sorry Grant, the campground and senior's centre didn't have wi-fi last year. I can check with the campground to see if anything has changed but I wouldn't count on it.

Road Hog 7 May 2010 15:54

No Wifi, that's a bummer, got to be a solution in this tech age. I have a Sprint unit for my laptop but I think it is only good in USA, will check.

Bob :scooter:

Ekke 7 May 2010 20:21

Hi Bob,

I'm not sure which company Sprint is associated with but I'm sure there is both Rogers and Telus service in Nakusp. Might be some roaming charges though. I wonder if it would be possible to can few screenshots of the software in action?

Your Great Escape presentation wouldn't be the same as last year's would it? If so, do want to change it up a bit?

Road Hog 8 May 2010 03:22

Ekke

The roaming cost could get high real fast, will keep thinking about it. The "Great Escape" was done in phases, Jan-Feb (last years report) Sept. Oct. Nov. Dec. for this years report. Blog at horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/thode if you would like a review. Next year Australia:mchappy::mchappy: wife will be along on this one.
Still trying to determine how to get a few years for the ultimate Great Escape, RTW.

Had thought of another presentation that could be useful "Basic electrical testing with Volt Ohm meter". We would need to find several meters and some other stuff.

Bob:scooter:

BlackBeast 11 May 2010 22:34

I'm registered together with a few of our friends. Who else is heading out from Vancouver? :scooter:

Dirtpig 12 May 2010 17:10

Hey Darryl :thumbup1:

There are a few of us coming from the Island this year. Hoping to go up via HWY 3 on the Thursday after work, camp somewhere along the way, and then be at Nakusp by mid day on Friday

Bob if you need a spare meter for the electrical seminar let me know as I will have mine with me and can bring a spare

I'm unemployed as of the end of July, so plan on leaving on the Wed. afternoon to get there for Thurs. afternoon. We plan on heading south a week after the HU meeting.:D

Lonesome George 12 May 2010 20:25

Hi Guys,

I'm starting my RTW trip in Alaska in July. Will be at the meeting (I think I've volunteered to do a talk). Then I'm meeting my wife at Banff (She's flying over from the UK for three weeks) and we're heading towards Vancouver and Vancouver Island. We have relatives near Vancouver and friends on Vancouver Island.

Hope to meet up with you all at the HUBBmeeting and maybe later on Vancouver Island.

Greetings from San Cristobal De Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.

I will probably go as well, from Victoria. But it'll be a last minute thing since my life is kinda up in the air right now.

Grant has asked me to do a presentation on my still ongoing Victoria to Yaviza, Panama, Victoria trip. I'm tempted.

Michelle,
Hope you can make it and would love to hear about your recent trip.

Ekke 13 May 2010 05:28

Leaving Van on Wednesday PM

I've got a conference in Vancouver that ends on Wednesday afternoon. I'll probably ride to Kelowna (where my brother lives) on Wednesday afternoon and then early Thursday to Nakusp to get set up.
Dom and Michelle, I'm looking forward to your presentations! :D

scharfg 11 Jun 2010 06:23

Hi Grant, Ekke mentioned that you put the info about the "wild" hot springs on the HU Nakusp poster.

I sent Ekke an email asking if he knew of the ones referred to but he suggested I contact you.

We went on a ride ~4 years ago and found Lussier in White Swan Park, and the Ram Creek one. Are there other ones close by to Nakusp (I read about the Dewar Creek ones but I don't think the crew is into hiking 9kms!)?

This is our first trip to a HU meeting so we are really looking forward to the event!

Thanks in advance.

Guy.

Grant Johnson 11 Jun 2010 11:01

Hi Guy,

Several years ago when I posted that I might have been able to answer you, but now, my goldfish memory hasn't a clue where I got all that from! I know there are several, so a google search should find some info. nakusp wild hot springs came up with a bunch of stuff. Sorry I can't be more useful!

see you there anyway :)

Dirtpig 11 Jun 2010 17:39

There are lots of hot springs in the area. You can look here at the tourism website for a list
http://www.hellobc.com/en-CA/SightsActivitiesEvents/Attractions/HotSprings/KootenayRockies.htm

or here at the hot springs website http://www.bchotsprings.com . Also if you ask in the local towns at any of the outdoor stores, like Valhalla Pure in New Denver, or at the local tourism office you they give you directions to the local hot springs. There a quite a few that are remote access with a short hike.

Hope this helps

Totally noob

Well I am planning to be in Nakusp. Not sure where I'll be traveling from.

I'm planning to tour Canada and USA then onto Europe maybe? I don't know for sure.

Finalizing divorce, selling everything, my BMW K1300GT arrives port of Montreal Monday June 21, dealer figures a couple of weeks shipping and prepping. Mid July is the target for picking up the bike and then I'll do a bunch of short trips around BC and Alberta to break in the bike and myself.

Going to take a advanced riding course once i get my bike.

I cant believe I'm doing this! Feels exciting and a whole lot of OMFG!! I don't know what I don't know, but I'll figure it out as I go!

:funmeteryes:

Anyone from Edmonton?

Just realized I gotta do change if address, guess I'll use my Moms address for License, insurance, bike registration. My Mom and I use the same Insurance company. Guess I better not tell them I'm living on e back of the bike and a tent.

How have other handled this? Any suggestions for a crazy Canuck?

I guarantee you'll love it! We get a lot of new people at our events, and they always have a great time. It's a fun group, and no one gives new people a rough time.

Here's a writeup about one of our UK Meetings:

See you in Nakusp - it's an amazing area to ride, you'll love it!

If you want to ride the world or any other country this is the place to meet people who will give you the how too. And if you are like me you will ignore much of the advice to your peril on the first time out for the long trip.
I will be leaving for travel meeting from Chehalis, WA, over hwy 12, Canon to Ellensburg, then north into Canada. Best to make it a day and half trip. You are welcome to come along if you are in this area.

Pickup/Tent camping for newcomer?

Grant, Susan, Ekke, Bob, As a new member and new rider, I am not outfitted yet. Can someone come to this site in a pickup (after I get my welding scrap metal out of the back, all 4 cylinders can take me to 60 on a hill - but only on the downhill side) for camping? I'd think that when people are new, they'd be welcome to come to these meetings with whatever they have and camp out, and learn about this activity!

My apologies for butting in

:welcome:

You can show up by bus or hitch hike for all I care!!! Just be there.

And Grant, Susan, Ekke, Audry I've decided to show up and I am prepared to do a presentation on

"AWOL South of the Border"
or
"Just Ellie and I"

3 months
25,500km's
9 countries
16 border crossings

This will be light on the "how to" and more of a trip report with Q&A afterwards, which can of course include "how to" questions.

Ditto - we're not fussy - we're travellers!

At the Germany meeting last year, a young Bulgarian, Kosta, bussed and hitchhiked all the way to the meeting, the last 20 miles on foot. Later that summer he was on his bike in Mongolia! :)

Starting to plan our ride down from Alaska for the meetup and was wondering, is Sunday a day of seminars, or is that the day everyone leaves? Thanks for the heads-up!

Liz

Grant Johnson 29 Jun 2010 21:07

Sunday is basically leaving day - many people want to get home for work Monday. Lots will hang about till noon or so if they're in no hurry.

Thanks Grant! :)

I'm In

I'm signing up now. I started a 6 month trip from Texas to Alaska to San Diego in April. I'm currently in Jasper Alberta on my way up and will start on my way south to make this meeting. It's been in my plans all along, just had to make sure my schedule held up. I'm 8,000 miles in on this trip on my V-Strom which is most of the riding I've ever done, looking forward to meeting more riders and learn all that I can for when I keep going south :thumbup1:

If you're short for volunteer help or presentations let me know. I won't need to tear out on Sunday if things get tight then. Looking forward to it!

Are you looking for a highlight of my travels so far or are you trying to fill in other areas. One idea I had is dealing with pictures on the road - taking them, organizing, picking what to share, cleaning them up, sharing, and the part I need to catch up on backing up. Would that be of more interest?

mac1054 8 Jul 2010 19:41

I've registered and am looking forward to my first HU Travellers Meeting. Likely leave early from Port Coquitlam, BC on August 11th for Kelowna and then on to Nakusp on the 12th.

Look forward to the meeting everyone there and learning lots more during the event.

Cheers,

John

Pics on the road sounds good - always a subject of interest to people. Highlights is good too! :) You have about 45 minutes in one slot - so think about how long you need. You could do 20-25 minutes each, or do two 45 minute presentations if you like. Start by putting it together and get a sense of how long it takes, and let me know. I look forward to it!

Pytheas 12 Jul 2010 02:11

Silly question, but are most people going to be camping onsite?

Will be registering soon.

Camping for sure

Yes, most people camp on site. This is where all the action will be for talking to people and it is right beside the hall where the presentations and dinners will be. Since the cost of registration includes the camping fee you might as well take advantage of it. There are a number of hotels in Nakusp should you want to go that route too. See you there!

Pytheas 13 Jul 2010 07:26

I guess the campsite is the place to be! I've registered. I'm really looking forward to this event.

Isn't it August yet?????

Cheers,

Thomas

I'll be there, riding with dirtpig all the way!:funmeteryes: giggity!

mac1054 22 Jul 2010 04:31

I'm planning to leave on the morning of the 11th and take HWY 3 & 6 .... likely stop overnight in Midway, BC That's about 450 Klm from the Lower Mainland so a nice campsite by the Kettle River should look good by then.

Anyone else decided to go this way?

BlackBeast 22 Jul 2010 21:07

Hi John,
Thomas & I may be hooking up to leave East Vancouver together as well. We haven't discussed a particular route; however I was thinking doing Hwy 3, 97 and then across on 6. Where are you located specifically? :scooter:

mac1054 22 Jul 2010 21:21

Hi Daryl, I'm in Port Coquitlam so I'll head out via the Lougheed Hwy East, over the Golden Ears Bridge on to 200th st, Langley and pick up the Trans Canada heading east from there. Depending on departure times for you and Thomas I'd be pleased to share the ride with both of you. If you also are interested in camping in Midway I'd suggest you call or email the campground I mentioned in the other posting and reserve a campsite (I did for me just to be safe).

Meal Plan Planning

It looks like the different meetings are organized a bit differently. For the California, you can pay for a food package that covers all day. Since it looks like you can only pay for dinners at the Nakusp meeting, the question is: Are the evening meals the only ones yo can pre-pay? i.e. Is that a bring-your-own breakfast and lunch? (Me, I'd pay for any and all meals furnished!) Thanks.

Pytheas 1 Aug 2010 07:28

I believe it's only the dinners that you can pay for. There are places to eat breakfast & lunch in the town of Nakusp, unless you want to bring cooking gear.

Pytheas has it right re Nakusp -- for why the meetings are different - it's always something different - I don't think we have two identical anywhere! In Nakusp there are plenty of good restaurants within a short walk, in California there's nothing within hours riding time... and the local caterer is awesome too! :)

In Portugal they think dinner starts at 10:00 pm, so we do that a little differently too :( (I'm starving by that time...) and in the UK we're in a pub so you eat whenever you like and no need to pre-book!

see you in Nakusp!

Riding from Ontario

Is there anyone riding out from Ontario? I would like to ride out there with a couple other bikes.

Jordan 17 Aug 2010 00:33

Just wanted to say thanks to Ekke, Audrey, Grant and Susan and all the volunteers and presenters who helped make the the HU meeting a success. Once again it was a great event, fun was had by all. Excellent presentations, good riding and great company made it memorable.
Cheers,
Jordan.
