Peter, sounds brilliant to me! Go for it! A cook at the UK Meeting this year suggested he do a "cooking class" / demo next year. A dozen people in twos at a stove, and talk them through it. The rest get to watch and learn. How's that sound? My worry is it's too hard to do on the fly with beginners.

I can kick in some for supplies, write me and we can discuss what's needed.

Good excuse to do a stove comparo too.

I went to this last year and had a blast going to the talks, riding and meeting new people. Unfortunately, I have a family vacation that conflicts with the event this year and I don't think I'll be able to make it.

If you're making your way to/from the south, you might consider Usal Road - Usal Rd to Petrolia, CA - Google Maps . It connects the Lost Coast with Shelter Cove then on down to Fort Bragg and Highway 1 on the south side. It's dirty and rutty and, from what I've read, really slippery after a rainstorm. At the same time, it's beautiful territory, sometimes with views of the ocean and cliffs. Last year I rode it and it was almost completely dry, but you have to keep an eye on the weather reports. Not recommended to go alone when it's been raining. It's not the fastest route, but it was much more entertaining than the freeway I took on the return trip south to San Francisco.

I'll bring a couple of stoves and make something simple.

I like the Coleman Dual Fuel because it runs on the same stuff as the bike, but i have used various types over the last 4 decades.

If the guy with the De Soto comes by again we could do a wine pairing, or even a vertical tasting!!

Looking forward very much to the meeting and seeing people i met last year.

Oh, one other question, any piece of equipment (beyond the basics of tent, sleeping gear, clothes) that folks here thought helped make the weekend better?

I found one of those Cyclops type flashlights that attach to your forhead very useful last time.
I arrived after dark and went to the lecture hall, it was getting on for midnight when i put up the tent.
Also good for reading and generally getting around at night with 2 hands free.

Shelter Cove has a way better grocery than Petrolia, so stop for provisions there if coming to Petrolia that way (before S.C., on the downhill, left side - something like Shelter Cove Grocery!).

i'm not going to be able to make it, I just got into San Fran and heading to Portland OR to buy a bike, and i have friends who have been living in Guyana going to be in Portland for the weekend oh well next one :(

Ah, the tricky CA DMV. I have a 3-5 day wait on registering my bikes, so I can't ride up there.

If anyone is going and will be passing through Sacramento, I'd love to hitch a ride. Lorraine already left and I don't want to rent a car.

I'm headed up from SF Bay in the morning to arrive Thursday before dark. Have 3 presos on indigenous bikes which is just an excuse to talk about traveling. China on Chang Jiang, Europe to Morocco on BMW/Ural sidecar, Adriatic on Guzzi. Don't have to do them all, or all at once. Grant and Susan I have them on a USB thumb drive in ppt, pdf and quicktime format so something should work!

Glad to hear about wine guy, I don't think the KLR will hold any more anything. Looking forward to the food, and the riding, and Honeydew route - people keep telling me about it though it looks like Honeydew town is on the way from 101 to Petrolia. Guess they make honeydew melons there so maybe stop and get one.

:mchappy: Would love to get companionship on dirt to the coast - have borrowed this KLR and am reviewing it, but unskilled on dirt - When I was 15 I was much more daring and didn't care about falls but now the numbers are reversed and I am.
