HU Greece 2012 Travellers Meeting, July 26-29

Welcome to the 1st Horizons Unlimited travellers meeting in Greece!

Please have a look at the meeting's Registration page where a great effort has been made to cover as much possible information, aspects or other enquiries.

Should you by chance have a question not clearly answered at the meeting's page, please feel free to contact for further clarification.

The same goes with any other kind of information that you may need in respect of travelling to and from the meeting, suggested places that you may combine with it or just seeking information on the Greek context.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you at the meeting this year.

Until then, have pleasant and, above all, safe rides.

If you go there take the "old" highway, its absolutely FUNtastic! The new one is good because all the trucks go this way now and the old road has some stunning views.

Toyark 21 Apr 2012 14:35

Fabulous roads up there especially a little further north around Metsovo where there are some delicious cutlets!
Nice village too

dkissonas 22 Apr 2012 08:07

Indeed, Bertrand, access to the meeting via Metsovo-Haliki-Kalarrytes-Pramanta is the best route for those coming along Egnatia road from the east, in both distance and scenicness. The problem is that most GPS's do not have it because although most of it is paved, there is still part of it that remains dirt road.

In general, many roads in the area, even if they charterred, become damaged over the winter and the one proposed on the meeting's announcement page is the one that remains open throughout the year.

By the way, the meeting's page is now live!

bushman_uk 22 Apr 2012 09:31

Now there's an idea !!!! We are going to the German hubb meeting and from there down around the Balkans.
Never ever been to Greece, so this could be a good opportunity to pay a visit to your wonderfull country .
Keep us informed , how many places will there be ?
Sounds good sitting in the sun, good wine and food and talking to like minded souls, nothing is better than that !!!

dkissonas 22 Apr 2012 10:09

Hi there, Bushman,

The location is Tzoumerka Mountain in NW Greece, so good you didn't mention, along with the sun (yes, there will be) the wine (yes, there will be), the deep blue warm sea (no, there won't be, unless you ride for 3 hours...).

Instead, the closest to that is crystal clear waters from freshly melting snow, but then when it's 40 degrees centigrade outside it makes it such a challenge!

Hope to see you there and have a nice, and above all, safe ride down Europe.

dkissonas 29 Apr 2012 20:46

Dear Bertrand,

What I meant is that on the one hand there is a very widespread network of dirtroads that most GPSs don't have at all and, on the other hand, some of the roads that GPSs do have, even further show some of them as paved roads, they may be totally impassable because of the severe winter.

Even those routes that we have suggested on the meeting's announcement to be proposed ride-outs, we will be checking a few days before because, as expected, we wouldn't had chosen the ordinary roads that link villages, but those who are best passable, though without lacking any scenicness.

Of course, for hard core offroaders, we already have in mind a few to suggest but they may very well have not been riden or driven in years and, further to this, in a most unfortunate occasion help might be difficult to get there, let alone organise a numerous convoy. Come and we'll sort it out.

Gallos 16 May 2012 12:27

καλημέρα,

δεν χρειάζεται λογαριασμός και για τον συνεπιβάτη, απλά συμπληρώνεις την φόρμα για τον καθένα ξεχωριστά..

Toyark 24 May 2012 19:28

Dimitris,
Burning Question : where to find good lamb Kleftiko ??
last trip to Greece I failed miserably to find any.
and can you please translate Gallos & nProdigy_GR posts? thanks !

dkissonas 24 May 2012 20:32

Hi there, Bertrand. How's the bike restoration going? Did you manage to fix the worn threads? "Kleftiko" has indeed become rare mostly because it needs hours to cook, in contrast to barbeque, and tavernas prefer nowadays to provide quickly made food. I'll ask in the village if anyone makes it now and then and I'll let you know, I myself haven't had it in years and have missed it!

Prodigy was just asking where on the registration form to put the name of his fellow passenger and Gallos informed him that everyone registers separately.

Meteora MUST be visited also :)

bikerden 12 Jul 2012 14:59

Meteora

I'm in Meteora now on my way, losely to the meeting and yes, it is stunning. Scenery that i think it unlikely you will find anywhere else in the world. Actually stayed for 2 nights which is most unusual for me LOL.
Bertrand are you attending this one? be good to catch up.

BTW The oil pressure switch on my R100 GSPD has gone and packed up on me so if anyone attending has got or could source a spare it would be most appreciated.bier
contact via here or 07842 114370 or email dennis@scootersinthesahara.co.uk as I'm wild camping a lot of the time I don't always have access to wifi.

The overall schedule is posted now here and the Presentations Schedules are:

bikerden 29 Jul 2012 15:04

The inaugural Greek Horizons meeting is now well and truly over and what a fantastic few days it has been! Just a few of us remain to pester the refuge staff: myself, Taz, Joel and Martin, who are heading off south together tomorrow; Alex & Mila are also heading south but are way too much in love to want to travel with us…. Hanno is heading off north towards Albania

Dimitris and the refuge staff finally have time to sit and relax and take stock of the weekend. The few of us left have done a sweep of the site to collect any left over rubbish and true to form for a Horizons meeting there was hardly anything left to pick up, which for a gathering of 127 bikers is quite remarkable by any measure.

Dimitris has done an amazing job of organising this first event and I’m sure it will go from strength to strength in the coming years. As for Babis, Paula and their staff no praise is high enough for the fantastic job they have done in looking after us and always with good humour and a smile! They have had to cope not only with over 100 hungry, thirsty bikers but also with weather that just suddenly went from intense heat to a storm of tropical proportions to say nothing of a power cut on Friday night which I must add did nothing to dampen the good humour and enthusiasm of the participants!

The presentations were a nice mix of Greek and English so there was plenty to keep the interest of the non-Greek speakers amongst us and very well put together and presented. For my money the best of the non- Greek presentations was undoubtedly Alex Conrad with not only a most professional presentation but also a truly humbling story
.
This is a meeting that I can only see going from strength to strength and it is a shame that one prime HU sponsor couldn’t see their way to assisting Dimitris rather than showing utter and complete arrogance which will have done their already poor reputation no good at all. I for one sincerely hope that they are not in attendance next year

Once again a huge thanks you to everyone (except the supposed HU Sponsor!) involved with this new kid on the block. I look forward to celebrating its first birthday next year when I am sure the attendance will easily top the double century!:clap::clap:beer

Greece Horizons Meet

I can only praise the staff and Dimitris for all the hard work and organization of the first--and hopefully not the last meeting in Greece. Outstanding venue way up here in the mountains, stunning views and what wonderful people. Hospitality here has a whole different meaning. Put this meeting on your calendar for next year.

Joel and Taz--back on the road tomorrow to a couple Greek islands, maybe then to Turkey and points unknown.

zandesiro 5 Aug 2012 13:06

Where can we see some official photos of the meeting??:(

debseed 5 Aug 2012 14:16

I have just arrived back in the UK after this meeting. I can only echo what other people have said. The location, the people, the organisation, and the presentations were all exceptional. You must put it in your calendar for next year, you would be crazy to miss it! Photos are appearing now on Facebook, and I have asked people to share their links here. In the meantime this is a link to one of the presentations, What happened when 4 Greeks travelled to the 'enemy' state of Turkey (English subtitles)
