Front caliper problem on a TA´94 - please help

Hi there!

I have a 1994-1995 Transalp but I can't use it at the monent because of a broken front brake caliper. A new one is almost 500£!
So I'm trying to find a used caliper but it's hard to find any in Denmark so I'm looking for some help here.
I'm wondering if I can use a caliper from a different year of TA - or maybe even from a different model (like a CB600 for instance).

If you have just got the part number for the caliper of a 94-95 TA it would help me loads, but if you know of any calipers (that fit my bike) that are for sale, please let me know.
I don't have any other bike/car so I'm pretty much stuck for now.

Thanks in advance

Ryan

Not a Honda man but have you checked to see if Africa Twin calipers are the same? There are plenty of bike breakers in the UK, check their sites online plus Ebay and Welcome to www.xrv.org! Search Results Powered by OXiDE search ....radical results (TM)

Broken caliper

Ryan Jensen,
when you say you have a broken caliper.... what part of the caliper is broken ?
Is it the mounting or are there other pronlems please describe the problem a little more accurately there may be another solution.
How did you break a caliper they are pretty tough items?
Has it ceased to operate?
Kind Regards
Champ

The small collar that holds the dust seal in place, is broken. I don't know if it was a specific event that caused it. It's gone just over 90,000 kms and I just came home from a +10,000 km trip with lots of gravel and other fun stuff. Plus, it's had at least one winter with loads of salt.
Anyway, it couldn't hold the dust seal in place so it got stuck in there and made it brake all the time since the pistons got jammed.
I made a temporary fix in Russia but when I got home I had a proper look at it.

Hope you can make some sense out of the picture.
Anyway, I think I'll just go for the caliper on ebay and hope for the best. It would save me a lot of money and I will be able to ride sooner than if I had to wait for a brand new part.

Does any of you guys know if I can use a '89 caliper on a '94 bike?

Thanks for the help so far

Ryan

Re broken caliper

Hi,
The photo is indicating that the broken part is the piston, I say this because the arrows are on the piston and not on the housing. if its the housing possibly no choice but to change the housing

If its the piston this can be manufactured by a local machine shop and can be manufactured very accurately pistons are made from several materials usually Aluminium, steel and chrome plated, or stainless steel, not hard at all to manafacture and should be done at a reasonable cost.

Hope this helps
Kind regards
Champ

Broken Caliper

PS,
If your pointing to the dust seal and the retaining ring for the neoprien part / the dust seal.... then this should be part of a rebuild kit ie. seal and dust seal usually serviced as a kit from local Honda dealer or try after market (probably cheapest) from a break repair shop. A new kit should be installed if any of the parts have been damaged . Be thoroughly meticulous with the restoration as cleanliness is manditory coat the parts with small quantities of brake grease(special white grease)
Cheers
Champ

The pistons didn't seem to have any damage. What you can see in the photo is only the housing. Pistons and seals are all removed. So the small pieces that have broken off were supposed to keep the dust seal in place. But when it didn't, dust could pass, create more friction between the seal and the piston. Little by little the seals starting to 'pop out' in the small spaces where the housing is falling apart. This again would create a lot of pressure on the side of the pistons, making them unable to move properly back after braking.
The holes are so big that I could see the seals even before removing the pistons.

Anyway, I checked on the caliper on ebay. It was from a 1989 bike but it's a little different from the 1994 model. I checked for brake discs and they are the same for both bikes and the front fork where the caliper is mounted is the same, too. So I figured that it would have to fit. Not sure about the brake hose, though, but I'll have to wait and see.
If you don't hear anything from me for a long time, it's because it works and I'm riding my bike again

Thanks a lot for your help everyone! I really hope this works!

Look me up if you ever go to Denmark

Those twin pot calipers (if they are the ones I think they are) were on sooooo many Hondas in the 90s.
CBR600s, Transalps, CBR1000Fs, ATs, VFR400s, VFR750s, CB-1s, CB400 Supersports, Crbr 400RRs, Dominators, NTV650s, XRs, CBFs, Hornets etc. Loads.

They should all be interchangeable, IMO.

I just got a '89 caliper and checked if it fit. It didn't!

Will try to find a 95 model now. No more trying in the dark. I even checked and found out that the 89 and the 95 model used the same brake discs and identical front forks. Well... Apparently not.
PS. If anyone needs a 89 caliper, let me know.

Thanks for the help anyway.
Will let you all know when it works again
