So, 37bhp at the back wheel. Can't remember where (didn't find it on search) but I remember debating what it was with Rich Lees.

This is a very old run (June 2003), I just found it and got round to scanning it.

New run coming up in the next week, after I've gone down from the #180 main (stupid) to a 170, or even a 165.

I think I said 31 or 32 bhp at the rear wheel with knobblies. 165 main. standard exhaust with core in (and out!) and airbox snorkel removed.

the dyno man said he gets different readings on different days and would read little into comparatives between bikes tested on different dynos due to calibration, weather ... well, whatever! it does 140kmh+ off road and that's plenty scarey for me!

Just picked up my bike from being set up for desert travel on the Dyno rolling road. They worked with a gas analyzer and the power / torque measurements. The aim was for fuel efficiency, no leaning out anywhere in the rev range, and a very clean torque curve, for driveability off road with luggage.

I had already played with the carb (drilled the slide and ground the stop off the mixture screw).

The result? 37.2hp. The bike now has a 170 main jet and a short-type 48 pilot. They didn't need to trim the plastic guard, although the mixture did need adjusting. I can richen / lean off the mixture by opening or covering the screens in my airbox.

The most pleasing thing is that I should get 10% better fuel economy, yet the FMF PowerBomb / Yoshi setup I have now makes about 5hp more in the rev range 3.5-5.0K than the WB E-series I had before (which peaked at 36.9hp), while using a main jet that is TWO SIZES SMALLER. That's efficiency and good design for ya!

Dyno testing a bike fitted with knobblies will "rob" you of a few bhp, I remember reading an article (in TBM?) that mentioned this. Came about when a bike was dynoed before & after being fitted with Supermoto wheels. You could have nearly a monstrous 40bhp at your disposal....

Good point Steve. Luckily for me, in this case the bike is fitted with Avon Distanzias (pretty slick tarmac-only tyres). So it doesn't look like my bike will break the 40bhp mark http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/frown.gif

before I leave for Australia in August, I'll get both the XR650L and XR650R dynoed back to back with "trail" tyres.
the R is coming along well with approx 13 litres of fuel on the right and 9 litres of water on the left. exhaust went on today. well, the original end can was cut and shut to fit it on the right, leaving space for a tool kit to be slung under the left. Canning Stock Route, here we come!
