XR650L , any advice ??

Hi Guys,

I just bought an XR650L on Saturday and have done around 600kms so far, I found a washer placed in the exhaust just by the connection between the header pipe and muffler which I have just removed. I am concerned that my bike may be running to lean now and don’t want to damage the engine. When I start it and then put the choke off after 30 seconds or so it doesn't want to idle (although the engine is still a little cold), and when I give it a little gas is just seems to bog, its alot better when its warm and hardly noticeable but still bogs a little bit at very low revs. I am still running it in so I haven't tried the high revs yet. Am I just being paranoid and if not does anyone know what size pilot jet and/or main jet to try or have any other welcome advice. I have heard some suspect things about the baja designs kit saying that drilling etc is necessary and certainly don’t want to make things worse and then not be able to get them back to the way they were.
My snorkel is still in the bike, also I put in a temperature dipstick this morning and the bike doesn’t seem to be getting any hotter than my XR600R does, which is a good sign I guess.

I am clueless when it comes to jetting but want to get the most out of my XR650L, well thanks for any help.

Later guys
Mark

I don't recall if my bike did that before I re-jetted it. It's probalby normal for it to bog when it's cold, but if it still does it when it's hot then I'd look further.
But don't worry too much about screwing up re-jetting - you can buy jet kits from several places that are really simple to install with really littel chance of you messing it up.

Hi wbagwell,

Thanks for the advice, it does bog when hot but only ever so slightly at low revs, I was thinking about pulling the snorkel out and re-jetting it just to be sure, do you have any info of where I can get these simple kits you mention as for some reason this model isn't sold here in the UK and therefore there is nothing available here, guess I'll order from the states, just dunno where from. One other thing is if you know where to get jets for the carb on this model, some kinda Diaphragm Type CV carb or something...

Anyway thanks for your help dude.

You'll find a whole lot of info on setting up an XRL - including jetting - on my www.desertriders.co.uk website. Out of the crate they ran like dogs...
And now there's even a video of our XRLs in action!

see my website, www.sopgear.com for XRL setup. Stock, it's so lean, it will barely run.

MJC, well done on an excellent choice of bike. The engine will be back in mine in a couple of weeks, if you want a quick go on a fully deristricted desert-ready XRL.

Did you get it from the place with the website? (That we talked about before?)

Dave Lambeth's doing a full rebuild on my motor and I've sourced a kick-start Dommie to fit the bottom end of. It's looking up a little.

Meet for a in about a month?

Hey there POB

A sounds great, I'll bring my bike along and we can compare, I haven't played too much with the jetting as I'm not sure its worth the effort, maybe compare it to yours and then make up my mind... anyways drop me an email when you are around and we can meet up....when and where are you off??

Catch ya later

I had the same sort of problem a while ago, the bogging and missing at low constant revs and before it was warm turned out to be the bike running too rich which can be fixed by dropping the throttle needle down a notch then give it a go, still no joy, drop it another notch and repeat if necessary.

but make sure air filter is clean first and the carb is totally clean as it may be a pilot jet problem (blocked, honda carbs have always been a pain!)
