XR400, XR650 or XR250?
 

I need some advice on choosing a XR250, XR400 or a XR650L.. I`m not very tall or large, so I'm looking for a light bike, but I'm told that the weight differences are not that significant..

From all accounts the XR400 is fantastic for a small dual sport, tough and reliable, with big tanks available, but it is kickstart only. They have just stopped selling them in Australia where they were the most popular off road bike for a long time. XR650L is solid, heavier and taller with electric start and not as capable off road as the lighter XR400. Depends what you are using it for. I find 250's great in the bush proper but not powerful enough on the highway if you are trying to get along, thats not to say you cant do it. Ride them and see which one suits.

the 250 and 400 are very similar in size and weight. the 400 probably weighs 10kg more, but is much more powerful. of the two, I'd recommend the 400. Acerbis makes a big tank that fits the xr250/400/600 so they must be nigh-on identical. the sub-frame on the 400 it weaker than the L and you need to be careful not to overload it as its expensive!

the L is a different beast. I love it cos its big and brutish. its much bigger and heavier than the 400 and only the same speed as the 400.

neither is very comfortable, but both will get you all over some very tough terrain.

First of all,what kind of use do you plan for the bike?
This is the first thing you need to know!
Then you choose what is best for you.
The three bikes are high if you are not a tall man.
I ride an 650L for 11 years now and i am 191 cm.And is just fine for me.
If you decide the big tour or longer distances the answer is the L (250-650)
For shorter and extremer tours the others.

I won`t be doing enduro off-road, but a lot of dirtroads, more on a overland kind of way.. nothing to severe.

Honda is selling a XR250 Tornado and a 400 Falcon, they look more dual-purpose and civilized, I`m trying to go VERY light and since I`m kind of small myself (1.70 cms. 65 kg) a smaller bike could be better, I just don`t want to go too small.

Yes,the Tornado(no e starter) and the falcon are may be the best choice for you.
In southamerica are both quiet popular.So spareparts(made in Brasil)are handy.

It looks like the Mexican version of the Tornado comes with electric start.
I think I'll go for the 250, it looks that all the aftermarket things for the normal Xr259 fit, not so with the Falcon.
Specially the larger gas tank.
How difficult you think it would be to fit a rear disk brake? is it worth it?

You said that your idea is to ride ligth.So no worries with the rear drum.I think if adapting the disk is easy and cheap do it,but if not so.......
