XR125 Top speed? Spare the jokes on this one!
 

Hi All, :scooter:

Bought a 2007 XR125 in the UK a few weeks ago. I'm planning to use it as a little run around myself and also to teach my boys to ride on forest trails and so on. Had the idea that a 125 might do up to 70mph at a push, at least I seem to recall with the CG125.

Drove it from Newcastle in the UK to the Ferry in Stranrare, Scotland. Had it all to do to make the ferry (180 miles) with the throttle twisted onto the stopper the whole way. 50mph was as much as I could squeeze out of it, maybe more if I was going down a hill with the wind on my back and my chin on the bars!!

I am wondering what is the expected top speed? Perhaps mine is restricted and if so how can I quickly check that it is and what is there to un-restricting it.

Maybe they are geared lower than the CG125 roadbike in order to provide more torque for off road conditions?

Had a little Honda XL125 last year which was obviously a little older, but the same hp of course. That would barely pull 60 in absolutely ideal conditions. But then I am 6'4 and weigh 18 stone so. . . (I bought it for my girlfriend but ended up riding it myself).

But since when has speed equated to fun?

Well you a little heavier than me and you got 60mph! But you are right, its really the fun factor that counts and that is why we bought it, it certainly wasn't for speed!!

have you checked the gearing? some people think that putting a BIGGER sprocket on the Gearbox makes a bike faster. that is often not the case. try a tooth smaller, it will allow it to hold higher revs,,,,,,,,

is XL 125 any different than xlr 125?
 

well, if not so; then 80 km/h is the best one can derive from it! we tried it together; an xlr 125 (2002 made) and our f650 gs. xlr 125 was of course slower but, in the city traffic, it makes no difference at all nor in the winding mountain roads.
By the way, does anybody know what difference is there between xl and xlr? The saddle I suppose? and a user manuel or repair manuel would be very handy; because we don't have any...

The Haobon 125 I bought in China last year was a clone of a GS125 motor (except for the unusual gear change pattern) I managed a best top speed (measured against GPS - the speedo needle on the bike was flying all over the face of the speedo) of 95kmh, but this was something that could not be sustained for more than couple of minutes.

Realistic cruising speed was more like 75kmh.
