XR Oil and Whines?

Hello,
I just purchased my 1986 Honda XR600R and I just had a few questions that need to be answered:biggrin:

The previous owner did not change the oil on time, and when I went to change the oil it was black with some micro particles.

So I put a New filter and 10w-40, and checked the dipstick.

The color was still a little dark, not tan like clean oil.

Is this normal until I do a few oil changes?

And lastly, when I start the bike, it has a loud/medium continues whine from the topend, as far as I can tell.
I can only run the bike at idle on the kickstand for a minute or two until my chain comes in from the shop, so it really never gets as hot as it would with some miles on her.

Is this normal with a XR?

Any help will be most appreciated,
-Michael

P.S. Thank you for the help on the other topics I posted. It was most helpful:biggrin:

Re:

Hi

You could have flushed the engine, deisel is good for 2 strokes but I'd check for a 4 and if this is OK, you can buy flush at motor stores. shouldn't worry anyway as from the sounds of it you will need to drain the oil when stripping the engine anyway Lol

Must be a bearing and will need to be looked at. Better to get it seen to before it goes bang

XR oil and Whines?

The only thing I could think of is the bearing on the cam shaft is whining.
It doesn't sound like the cam chain.

If I were to take the rocker cover off, etc... How would I know if it is the bearing on the cam shaft that is bad??

Also, I flushed the oil twice and it looks just right! Nice and clean!

Thank you for the help,
-Michael
