Thumbs up 1981 Golwing (rust In Tank)

WHATS UP FELLOW RIDERS, I HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING A 1981 WINGER THAT IM FIXING FOR A FRIEND . IVE HAD A NUMBER OF WINGS(75,76,81,83) AND IVE FIXED,SLAMMED,CHOPED AND FLAMED THEM ALL TO LOOK LIKE BRAND NEW. PROBLEM WITH THIS BUILD IS THAT THIS BIKE HAS SAT OUTSIDE IN THE CORNER OF A FRIENDS LOT FOR MAYBE 4-5 YEARS. IVE MANAGED TO GET MOST OF IT CLEANED UP, BUT I LOOKED IN THE TANK, AND FOUND RUST,AND A HOLE LOT OF SETTLED DOWN ATHE BOTTOM OF THE TANK. HOW AM I GOING TO CLEAN THIS MESS WITHOUT PULLING THE TANK OFF THE BIKE? DO I TAKE THE MOTOR OUT/REMOVE THE BACK WHEEL TO GET THE TANK OUT, OR CAN I JUST FLUSH THE TANK WITH SOMETHING AND USE A WET VAC?? ANY HELP?? THANKS IN THE WIND ALWAYS, RUBBER TO THE PAVEMENT, IRONHEAD

The only way to deal with a tank that's rusty is to pull it out and clean it thoroughly, then get some Kreem and coat the innards.

Cleaning: pea gravel (sharp-edged kind, not the rounded kind) and a whole lot of shaking. Take it to the disco Saturday night.

Kreem (google it) - acid etches the innards then apply a coat of sealant.

goldwing gas problem

yes you have to take off the swingarm and rear drive to get the tank out. The tanks used to cost over $1000.00. The nice part is you have a fuel pump (which may be bad now) so you can pump gas out of any container you put on the bike. I used this to good advantage on my wing last summer to run a 5 gallon remote tank as well as the stock tank. really nice on the long rides. put some progressive front fork springs in and pump up the air in the back and you have a really big dualsport that runs and runs and runs.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
