Transalp Problems
 

Hey!
Been having problems with my transalp - basically it dies at around 3000-5000rpm (in UK), as soon a i pull the clutch in, its fine, but let it out, and again it has no power. If i drop from 60mph to 30mph it does the same. Its not the way i ride (hopefully!! as i have been on it 2 yrs with no problems, so can't be gear change etc), it seems like lack of fuel is getting to the engine. We have cleaned and drained the carbs, and recently taken the tank off and given the filters a thorough clean out. But it hasn't changed a thing.
Its really starting to annoy me now - has anybody got any suggestions?

Hi Ali,
You could try/test the petrol tap vacuum rubber to make sure you are getting enough fuel. Then there are the air cut off valves on the side of the carbs, also vucuum operated rubbers, and inspect for small holes.
These are problems I have had with my transalps with regards to fuel. The fuel tap vacuum can be bypast but the air cut off valves are an expensive necessity.

Also check to make sure the air box connections to the carbs are tight and sealed. It only takes a very little air leak for the bike to run roughly.

Good call there David, had those lossen up on my Translappers aswell. Removing the spacer on the clamps got them a bit more secure.
(now, if only I could fix the oil consumption problems on mine)

sounds like the clutch plates are worn. Worth checking.

Recently had similar power loss and starting problems on my Transalp. Fixed it by checking and adjusting valve clearances.

I have around 120.000k's in 4 years on my TA. My dealer hasn't event seen the inside of the engine or the valves yet and wen I ask about it he says 'don't try to fix what isn't broken'.
Kind of agree with him.

Ok, I migt have acouple of percentages less power, but that doens't bother me at all anymore. Suspension feels like a boat anyway by now. ;-)

Valve clearance is part of routine maintenance. As the valves 'settle' the clearance can decrease. This will effect the performance of your bike, if only in a small way. There are small covers on top of the cylinder head which can be removed to check these clearances with a feeler gauge. I have 2 Transalps, one had done 60 000miles and the other has done 40 000miles and both of them needed adjusting when i measured the clearance.
