Part question

Hi guys,
I am having my bike fixed in Panama. The dealer is now saying that he needs a new part from the states -
STATOR P/N # 31120-MWZ-781
He says this part will cost 380 dollars US!!! I have been unable to find it on the web.

I am mechanically numb so can anyone tell me what this part is, what it does and how much it should cost?

I don't trust this guy. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
Trys

Trys,

Presumably you've got an electrical failure. Is the old one past repair - could it be repaired locally? You didn't say which bike it is?

Have a look at www.partsfish.com

Register, or if you like, use this account:
User name- dog@woof.com
Password - password

You then need to click 'add a vehicle' and select your bike.

Stator will prob. be listed under 'Left crankcase cover, generator'

Follow the parts list down at the bottom until you find stator. NB I just looked for an XL600-R, it's $307. NB if you click/hover over the 'add to cart' button, you will see the URL has the part number in it.

Hope this helps,

Ian
p.s. don't try mailing me at dog@woof.com!

Sounds a bit dubious? Once you've identified the part & what's actually wrong with it, left me know if you need a hand sourcing one in the UK.

Thanks lads,
I used partsfish and found the part for $316. It's for an XR650L. The dealer in Panama wants $380 for the part but will not charge me labour so It will work out OK.
Thanks again,
Trys

if you can find 18 guage magnet wire, you can re-wrap it your self and save about 300$
just keep track of direction and number of wraps, keep the connectors and find a electric motor winding shop too test and dip it for you when it's finished... (I find a case of at the back door will usually pay for it)
