nx650 fuel leakage
 

Hi folks.

My dommie has been leaking petrol (via the overflow pipe) on and off for about 6 months. It usually just meant i had to turn the tap off everytime i parked up. In this time i've had the carb off about 5 times. I'm assuming the float valve is not working correctly. However it looks fine, and when i put it all together the problem disappears for months or weeks.

It suddenly came back today, but this time it continues to leak even when the engine is running.

Is a new float-valve going to sort this problem or could it be something else. The thing that confuses me is why the problem comes and goes. Surely if the float valve was gone - it would leak all the time.

Quick update:

I tapped the carb bowl firmly with a hammer a couple of times, and its stopped leaking. I assume now that the float valve is ok, and that the float itself is just getting jammed every now and again. This is not ideal but at least i didn't have to take the damn carb apart as this means stripping the back end of the bike.

I would like to fix this but i'm unsure which component is to blame for the float sticking.

As you describe,the float needle isn't seating properly,you will need to install a new one and check the fuel level.I did not know if were you are you find the float needle and its seat to buy,if so,the best choice is to replace both.

I have found that this overflow happens when you attach an aftermarket tank only...

Because it happens only on and off, I thought that it was a problem with a vacuum in the carb with fuel coming out of this overflow pipe, where my acerbis tank has no overflow pipe...

Have not replaced the needle or float, but if it did this while running that is a huge problem...

Have you replaced your float or needle, and how is the problem now?

Am off to ride a Dommie round the world for a couple of years myself, so am very interested in any work done on the fuel system...

I haven't actually completely solved the problem yet. Since i tapped the float bowel with a mallet and screwdriver i've had no more trouble! Thinking back, the problem started after i put on the Acerbis tank.

This simple fix seems to knock the float back into the correct position so i'm not going to mess around stripping the carb anymore, or trying new parts!
