here,s some more photo,s of my jerry can set up and panniers, the sump guard mounts to the original mounts and also an additional mount across the frame rails to take the weight of the jerry cans ( you can see the bolt heads just under the tool box) i looked at various sumpgurds but not many offered much protection for the oil filter housing or flywheel cover, they were also were quite exspensive, the pannier are a bit higher than i wanted but it was a bit of a compromise, and they are out the way of the exhaust, if any body wants any particular close up,s drop me a line and i will see what i can do.

What exacxtly do you plan on carrying on that rack!:eek3: water bufferlo perhaps!?

I have tried that type of pannier,I think they are made for use on Push Bikes
They are very waterproof,but the problem I found with them was that if you intend to go off road,or even if you ride on very pot holed roads the brackets that they use are not strong enough :(

I returned to the through over type.:thumbup1:

yes i know it,s a bit over kill but i am a ag-mechanic and i tend to over build thing,s, but i can tell you none of my racks have broken in over 70,000 k,s o f overlanding, might have to up the power to carry it tho !!! good point about the throw over bags, i did think of using 4 mounts instead of two but i had no problems on my last trip, but i did not over load them. the photo is froM ERG CHEBBI

I have brand new Ortlieb quick-release moto panniers, similar to bicycle ones that I planned to mount on racks but after several reports that these plastic mounts will break I'm in doubt.

I recently read another report that these plastic mounts just break from bike falling over. See video here:

hi mate , yes you are right, ithink if you did take a tumble then the brackets may well break, if i was going on a long trek then i would have a few spare set,s ,as they are not exspensive, also they were so cheap (£60)compared with other option,s that i thought if they last this trip then i would have had my moneys worth, i had no problems, but i must stress that i did not overload them.

so what do you use the jerry can for ? water or fuel?
if its for fuel , no problem with the heat of the negine?
just asking as i need to add 2 jerry can ( 5 liters each )on the engine guards of africa twin??? (worry about dropping the bike and the heat of the engine ifi i put it there )

hi omar ,first off real sorry for such a late reply, i have not checked this website for a while, i will try and answer your questions, i only used the r.h.s. jerry for water as it was quite near the exhaust, i only filled the petrol one on the l.h.s if i really needed to , this set up did not up set the handleing at all , also i put a broom handle across the jerry can,s and it made a very comftable easy rider seating position, well omar once again sorry for late reply, email me for any other questions, safe travels mate cheers fredddy

The first pictures I´d find =)

I´m gonna do a trip like 20.000k´s off road in Australia.
The weapon of choice is a XR650R, I want to buy the bike when I arrive in OZ.

My luggage will be the ortlieb panniers (49l), the ortlieb rack-pack (49l) a Tank bag (5l) and a backpack (15l).
Just want to take the most important things with me.

With the XRR the only thing I am concerned about is the weak sub frame (the tail).

I already had the idea to do some steel constructure as you did.

hi there mate, good on you for getting an xr650 it,s the best bike i have owned, and i have owned a few, mainly old pig,s , yes you are right about the sub frame it is not the strongest, and i certaintly would not overload it , my bike was fine we did 3500 kms in 3 weeks on some very rough tracks iknow my set up is not pretty but it was cheap and functional, only cost about 50 euro,s for the whole set up, the sump guard i built because i could not find one that covered the side casing,s, althought africa queens do a nice one but i could not afford the 500 euro price, good luck in oz if you can get out to the simpson and the cape york tracks, great places for off road bikes , if you need any more pictures or help just email me , all the bst fredddo
