Honda Varadero Ignition

I have now owned two Honda Varadero's and with both of them I have the same problem. When I want to restart the bike after riding for a while the starter motor does not want to turn at the first press of the ignition switch alsmost as if there is not enough power coming through. The ignition lights also go off and the clock resets to zero. Normally the second attempt she fires up without any problems. Any suggestions?

Probably you have the wrong battery. The Ah and volts are not the only way to rate a battery, also exist another number that indicate the max current rate that the battery can give you in an instant. Look for more information in this way.

I had the same problem with my Chevrolet Astro van when I replaced the battery for a new and cheap battery rated with the same Ah than the original but not capable to start the engine.

Is the battery getting charged? ie voltage with motor runing at speed is over 13 volts, and run for more than 5 minutes, and not discharged when stoped (leaving lights, ignition, heated grips (err Africa ... ) on).

Are the connections tight and clean between battery and starter motor?

For the battery as well as the capacity (Ah ampree hours) you need to consider the CCA (cold cranking amps) rating.

What temperature are you riding in? (Could this be heat related - ie battery, motor and starter motor all gettting very hot?) Would cooling (say a spray of cool water over the motor before you leave it parked) help?

Think you need to provide more information to get a more focused suggestions. Good Luck.

Varadero Ignition

The Varadero I have now only has 4000km on the clock so I do not think it would be terminals or wrong battery. The temp issue brought up by Frank may be the cause as the temp here very seldom droppes below 30Deg C and the humidity stays pretty high. When riding slowly (Not even in traffick) the fan is kicking in all the time. Coming to think of it my previous Varadero was fine until I brought it into North West Africa.
