I would go to an XR-L only board/list/newgroup for better answers for the UK.
Here in the USA the XR-L owners have a few choices.

1. IMS
2. Clarke
3. Acerbis
4. Aqualine (Aus)

I should think IMS and Clarke might have distributors in the EU and for sure
Acerbis are represented in the UK somewhere. All the above make oversized tanks for the XR-L. The IMS seems to be the most common here, I think its
around 5 US gallons, they also make a 4 gallon one I believe. Clarke make a nicer tank, not sure of capacity.

Aqualine's tank I believe is 8 US gallons !!!!:helpsmilie:

In most situations a 200 mile range is OK. In certain situations you may want more.....for me, in that rare instance I carry a two gallon plastic jerry can on the back somewhere. If you plan carefully and know where you are going you should be OK........famous last words....! :eek3:

Best,

clark tank

I have the clark tank which I liked better than the IMS because of the color. It has been on two different bikes one a 2003 XR650L that I put 15,000 miles on and then kept the tank and bought a 2005 XR650L and it has about 12,000 miles on it. It has held up fine. Been crashed about 10 times and has held up fine. I do not like the fact that you loose the locking gas cap. I have rejetted my bikes and taken off the smog stuff. Normally run the stock sprockets and get about 240 miles max on it. This will get you buy most places in the world. Where it does not you just strap on a gallon or so jugs and you should be fine. To have one much bigger just gets to top heavy most of the time. I have had some problems with overheating on long interstate runs because you loose the elephant ears for ducting the air. I have cut off a few inches from the front fender on the front and back and that seems to have cured that. I run a oil guage temp stik to keep a eye on the temp. I bought mine from ebay but do not recall what I paid anymore.

Bert Harkins racing are the UK importers for Acerbis - based near Dunstable if I remember - phone no 01582 491076. Always been helpful when I've phoned them.
The 650L is rare in the UK so bits like tanks are prob not available off the shelf. Might be easier to get a friendly US contributor to help you get something from the states - with the pound / dollar the way it is at the moment it might be cheaper too.

you should find you can fit the 22litre tank from the XR400/600. you might need to relocate the regulator-rectifier. Bert Harkins is your man in the UK

I have the Acerbis 22L on my xr650l. I like it a lot. People were complaining about the fit, but mine went on real easy (1996 though, but i dont think much has changed). Just be sure to loctite those bolts, I lost two somewhere in Mexico because I didnt. And be sure to mount it as far back (towards seat) as possible to provide easier access to the oil cap.

Do you shop? why don´t you try here? i think UK is expensive in this matter. But i don´t know exactly the ship price and custom taxes if apliable to you.
I ride an old 40 liters Acerbis tank.No problems so far. Iam tall so seating problems from size.
eBay Motors: Acerbis Tank Honda XR650L 1993-1996 5.8 Gallon 11159006 (item 250098057614 end time Apr-23-07 17:43:39 PDT)

Theres this brand new 15 litre tank on ebay at the minute quite cheap. Item number: 280108307512

I know it's 5 short, but if you fill it with boiling water you may be able to increase the capacity a couple of litres.
