Dommie Run-In: Do's & Dont & Carb explosion?

Hi Everybody!

Just had new piston sleeves, so run-in is a must right?
What are the do's & dont?
not to revv too high.... right? What I do is not exceeding 3500 RPM. Keep doing this for the next 1000KMS?
Then oil change & off you go right.....?
Its really hard to control the RPM after being "push" at the traffic light by other smaller bikes! & this 1000kms seems to be taking forever cause my work place is only 12kms from home & I usually goes to places from work using the co's pick-up truck. Any other way of run-in it in quicker?
And not ruin it!!

Carb explodes!
I've notice that during cold start, I have to use the choke, this normal for Dommie, right? (this what I've been practising for my Dommie) Anyway, It often suddenly dies, just after a slight explosion (POPPED) sometimes more than once, (POP-POP-POP) quite loud, making head-turns! which sounds from the carb & theres a smokey smells! But after the engine is warm enough it doesnt die, (what I do is start leaving the scene while the choke is still being pulled) When its warm enough its okay, but sometimes the explosion still occur!! Anyone familiar with this situation?

Nope, no short cuts for running in, that I know of anyway.

Full choke is usual for cold starts.

Popping

Osama,

I'm no bike mechanic, but that pop popping can be caused by running a lean burning engine (there again I understand that it can occur as a result of a rich burning engine with excess fuel exploding in the exhaust).

Very hard to recognise from descriptions only what is going on, but if you have to use the choke to stop the popping then it is very likely that the bike is running lean - not a good idea in the long term.

Check that the bike is set up in accordance with the specifications for a Dommie and that everything, such as the connections between the carb and the cyl, are in good condition with no air leaking in.

found-it!

Hey Dave,
guess what? after checking the connections, found out that the plastic(rubber) manifold was leaking AGAIN!!
I guess it crack due the storing of the bike for a long period of time.
Due to financial & parts problem, do you have solutions in fixing the manifold? What if chewing gum and some good tape?
Will this work/last?:confused1:

Fixing a bike with chewing gum and tape will cost you more in the long run.
Try to get second hand parts, cheaper and better then chewing gum.

I know..... & thanks for the advice Jan,

But do you think its okay to use temporarily... maybe for a few thousand KMs? Im really broke, I really have to keep the bike running & as soon as I have enough money & parts I buy it (promise)
Secand hands parts are impossible, even new parts sometimes have to be ordered from the Land down under!! Which sometimes take forever!

I would not use chewing gum. If it is sucked in the engine you´re in trouble.
Try with just tape or maybe try to fix it with a tyre repair kit ? Is it rubber ?

its rubber

yes it is rubber, its like the manifold that hold the carb on the GS1200, not sure wheter its the same but similar, maybe harder. I was planning to leave it till dry, then wrap it with tape. The crack is only a hairline.. which Im sure it'll hold...
