Dommie Dipstick Oil Temp Gauge
 

Does anyone know who makes/where I can get an oil temperature gauge for my Dommie in preferably the USA or the UK. I have seen one on a bike in the Alps and would like to find one before heading south to warmer climates (I have just parted with $1400 canadian possibly due to a problem associated with cooking the engine. see posting regarding xr/dommie life) I can find one to fit the XR650L in the USA. Is this the same sized oil filler hole? Something tells me it is smaller. Any ideas would be appreciated.

In the UK you can get one mail order from MPS - http://www.thefastone.co.uk but i have no idea which part number it is so you would have to ring.

I was thinking of fitting one of these to my Dommie but last year I rode it from London to Singapore all the way through Iran/Pakistan etc.. in 56c heat. I also rode round New Delhi on my way to college every day for two months in Delhi traffic in 48c.

Don't get me wrong though, the engine did get hot but it never complained. I used to switch it off at traffic lights (everyone does in Delhi). I then rode to Singapore via, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia.

The bike still runs well here in the UK so not sure if fitting a gauge will help in anyway but may just be another thing to take your eyes off the countryside http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif (or the road)

Be interesting to hear what others have to say especially if they have fitted them.

I had one fitted on my XRL, when it seized in Spain (in temps of about 43C). Pretty yes. Useful? Probably not.

In my experience it didn't really help, for 2 reasons:

1)When something disastrous happens (like oil pump failing or a piston ring popping) the oil temp spike is so quick that you'd have to be constantly watching the little dial to notice. Noises from the bike are far moer obvious!

2)Having the guauge makes you complacent. Mine was severely underfilled by a garage and the oild droppped off the bottom of the dipstick in the course of a single day. As soon as the sensor was getting the ambient temp. in the oil tank, the needle went back down to normal operating temp. Bad news.

For my big trip I think I'll install an oil pressure sensor with a really bright light / buzzer or something. Much more useful. Anyone done this?

Also:

They're damn hard to see once you have a big tank, barbag, barpad, tankbag, GPS, enduro bottle etc etc etc.

The only thing I ever really used mine for was quantifying how useful my oil cooler was, and finding out when the bike was warmed up properly.

Anyone fitted an oil cooler to their Dommie at all? Now that I have totally rebuilt my engine (££$$$), I would like to look after it by keeping it cooler.
