They're not really suited to adventure/RTW travel. Why make the trip anymore difficult than it has to be simply for the sake of style? As dubious as that style may be.

Oh! I didn't realize cruisers didn't constitute adventure/RTW travel vehicles.

Anyway, I thought this forum was focused on the "motorcycle traveler" as is implied at the home page intro. I feel pretty confident that I'm a motorcycle traveler.

As far as adventure/RTW travel goes, I have transversed across the USA twice on my cruiser and it seemed pretty adventurous to me.

I am planning a trip across Europe and parts of North Africa in May and thats across the world from me, so maybe that could be considered RTW travel.

Style? Well style is just one of those things us yanks do best.

Hmmm! I can't remember anything difficult about my travels. Except..oh yeah!...there was the one time I had to pour that Aussie into a cab who couldn't hold his liquor at Sturgis, in his dubious efforts to out-drink me. Oh yeah, his bird didn't mind that he had to go either.

No - Maybe I don't do off-road as well as you blokes but that doesn't mean there isn't a calling for cruiser riding in other countries as well as on this forum.

I don't see why a cruiser would not work. I can see where some of the dirt roads might cause you to slow down a bit more than say my DRZ, but I am sure it would make it. On the other hand a cruiser has a definate advantage on the open road in comfort. I have seen footage of WWII where the military had knobbie tires on old harleys going off road, doing jumps etc.

Yes! That's adventure motorcycling for sure. What a trip! I don't expect it was any less fun on a cruiser either.

Lots of people have ridden around the world on crusiers. It doesn't matter what you ride, it just matters that you go!

WHERE you go will be determined partly by what you ride and partly by your determination.

Ride what YOU like to ride, and be prepared to change your mind as your choice of places to ride changes. Personally I wouldn't ride a cruiser across the Sahara - but I'm sure someone has done it!

If Sjaak Lucassen can ride a Honda CBR900RR Fireblade AND a Yamaha R1 (second trip) around the world, including through the worst of Africa, I'm sure a cruiser can do it. Doris Maron is riding a Honda cruiser around the world, and she's doing fine.

GENERALLY a dual-purpose bike is EASIER for rtw trips, IF you want to go off-road and into the back country. You DO NOT need it.

Less concern about WHAT people ride and more about "just doing it" would be more to the point.

Below is a link talking about some guys in the 1950's and the places they took their harley's like mountain roads, mud trails etc. It has lots of photo's. That was the days before dual sport bikes. Gives you an idea what you can do if you only want to.
