clutch problems

this may not be related to an overland type bike unless your in asia but i have a CRM250 which is dragging it's clutch (when in gear and I rev it, it seems to pull and want to go forward).

I would usually relate this to the clutch basket snagging on the plates. Can these 'burrs' be filed off and if so where or what am i looking for to file off. Ive not cracked it open yet so wanted a bit of advice before doing so.

It sounds more like incorrect cable adjustment. If you don't have any freeplay in the handlebar lever, then you could get the symptoms described. Turn the knurled adjustor inward, free up the play and see if the symptoms go away or decrease.

When the clutch plates catch as you stated, it only affects the last part of the lever coming fully out. You sort of get a little jump as the bike pulls away properly. Bloody annoying until as you say you run a file over the grooves in the aluminium tangs.

cheers bayonet, Ive oiled cable and adjusted but now it has the symptoms as you said, it's a lot better but it's the basket then!
pooh- the most expensive part of the whole bike to replace!

Bad luck, the basket for my Africa twin was quoted as about £300 new. Out came the file. The grooves in the tangs are quite easy to gently remove. It's more easing the step than trying to file the whole thing flat, which would be very difficult. Did mine at 60,000 miles and it's still smooth on pull away at 96,000. Make sure you give it a good wash before putting it back in, to prevent swarf getting into the engine. Also try and get a new centre nut(cheap) before you put it back together as they are a one use item.

Don't forget to check if you need a new tab washer for the centre nut. Re-using old ones is a false economy.
