chain

Hi
I need help with the chain on my XR650L. It streches a lot when I am on dirt roads and eats my sprockets.
What should I do?

Buy only steel sprockets and a quality chain. Only replace them together as a worn chain will wreck new sprockets and vice versa...

Keep it cleaned and lubricated. If you're in sand and dirt I find no lube is better as oil just forms a grinding paste.

Hi Hans, chain are high wear items on the xr650l,I,ve snapped mine three times now so I maintain it meticulously. The main reason for this is the large power pulses that thumpers produce and with no Cush drive on the xrl the wear on the chain is even greater.
When you replace the chain and sprockets buy a xr650r front sprocket it has a larger contact area on the countershaft splines and saves them from wearing because of it,s extra width it may need to be ground down a little, but I well worth doing this mod as worn countershaft splines means an engine strip down.

I normally replace the front sprocket before it is too worn and keep the same chain and rear. I find that the front will be starting to "hook" well before there is much sign of wear on the chain or rear. Sometimes do three fronts to a chain and rear. I run a split link and sometimes need to pop a new clip on if it looks a bit worn.
