CBX 250 Oil Filter change

Hi guys

I'm planning to maintain my wife's CBX250 Twister myself, here's a question:

The owners manual claims that a special oil filter tool and a torque wrench
are required to perform the oil filter change. is this really necessary?

Seems like a pretty simple job, and the detailed explanation does not actually indicate what/where this special tool is required?

Thanks for any replies

Thumbs up Easy job

Have a look in Halfords or similar - there are universal types (I use one) that will get most oil filters off. Often, it is a case of difficult access among the header pipe(s) rather than special fittings to get a grip on the thing.

Torque wrench: not really - do it up by instinct i.e. not over-tightening. If it drips oil then tighten it a bit more!

Thanks for the reply Dave. Regret no such thing as Halfords down here in South Africa, neither Tesco or Sainsbury's. However, we do have some good automotive parts and acessories chains. Guess I should find something suitable

The owners manual recommends oil & filter change every 3000km, sounds a bit too often to me?

Ooops

Mike.

Well, one day they will set up shop!

Go by the service recommendations; small engine = not much oil in there (about a litre+ a bit?) = change it more frequently than big engines.

If you look back on earlier posts (you can search around using key words) you will see that some guys have seized their small capacity engines by running the oil "dry" (Look who's talking - I did the same thing many years ago with a 250cc!).

The filter will be small as well = smaller surface area.

The type of oil filter wrench I have is based on an expanding system of "prongs" that close more tightly on the filter as it is turned anti-clockwise; It is reversible for tightening the filter. Therefore it is universal and will grip a range of sizes of filter cans. There are other types as well - strap wrenches etc etc.
Have a good look at the engine for how you will access the filter (I usually need an extension on the spanner to reach in there) and drop it off the bike once it is un-screwed, and then get a wrench that will do just what you want.

ps I am assuming in all of this that the engine has a "can" type of filter!!

Valve clearance

Hi,

I am also from Centurion. I have been servicing my CBX for a few years now, but have never adjusted the valve clearance.

Did you have any luck with this?

Thanks
