Any Honda XR Wheel experts out there!?

Hiya Folks,

I'm keen to get some super strong wheels for my Honda XR650L, and would appreciate any tech info on the subject, advice, supplier details etc.

At the moment I'm running the stock wheels, which are already showing corrosion on the rims and spokes.
As I'm doing much of my up-coming trip alone, I'm even more keen to avoid bike troubles.

A few points I could do with answering is possible;

- What other bikes use exactly the same wheel configuration as the XR650L?
- Are oversized spokes as good an upgrade as they sound?
- Any potential problems with stainless spokes?
- Are wheel related problems actually common, do I need to upgrade?

For background, I'm planning a hugely optimistic RTW trip, first travelling alone across Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia. I love off-road, and hope to seek out as much dirt as I can find.

many thanks in advance people, how lucky we are to have this resource!

You could speak to Talon Engineering. They are in Somerset I believe.

Wheel & Spokes 101

If you rinse the salt of your bike your wheels will stay nicer looking longer.

Hi
MollyDog has covered your question very well, unless the corrosion is eating through the rims don't worry too much. I would reccommend you remove the wheels, tyres and tubes and inspect the spoke nipples. There was no corrossion on my xr400 wheels yet many of the nipples on the front wheel had seized. I replaced them and undid EVERY spoke nipple and greased with copper grease.......every once in a while give them a twist, just a quarter of a turn and back, to keep them from seizing.

Super, thanks

Well based entirely on your collective expertise, I'm going to stick with stock, and just have a few bits here ready to be sent as spares if need be.

So it's your good selves I'll be cursing when I have to fight my way across Mongolia with shattered rims and half a dozen spokes on each wheel :-)

Seriously thanks for taking the time to help.
