Africa Twin owners - Please help with this simple task.
 

I experienced a dire problem with my newly aquired RD07 Africa twin.

I went for a ride and the mud guard jammed into the bashplate when the forks compressed then rebounded. It jammed up the steering nearly killing me.

Well, I really need someone to measure some distances on their AT for me..

The distance from the mudguard to the bashplate ,
The distance from the outside of the tyre to the bashplate,
The distance from the outside of the rim to the bashplate.

All those at the shortest point and ideally on and off the centre stand (if possible)

I would be forever in debt !!!

I dont have an Africa Twin but I have a manual... Wheelbase is stated as 1565mm (centre to centre on axles). Difficult to see chain adjuster position but I think it is in the middle, another reference point is the Rear Caliper support, the measurement point on the rear axle aligns with the lower rear most edge of this.

Also to check your Fork Spring Lengths....
Upper Spring.. 68.3... limit 66.9
Lower Spring.. 564.1... limit 552.8

Front Mudguard... ensure fork bridge is fitted with Arrow facing forward.

I have heard of this problem before with AT. I guess its a fork flexing problem, after all the tubes are only 43 mm on a heavy bike. One cure is to chop a few cm off the fender and mabee tweak the bashplate just a little towards the frame. Alternatively fasten some metal or plastic over the gap between the frame and bashplate. Then the fender would not get stuck if it happens again. Or go for an high fender.

Ps. The incidents with jammed fenders was in heavy offroad condition.

Maybee your fender was not properly fastened? Beeing to fare away from the wheel?

The distance from the mudguard to the bashplate: direct line (bottom of mud guard to "middle of plate"): 12cm to top of plate because on mine the mudguard is 11.5 cm below the top of bashplate so hypotenuse of bottom of mudguard to top of bash plate: 16.5cm

The distance from the outside of the tyre to the bashplate, direct line 16cm
The distance from the outside of the rim to the bashplate. direct line 23cm

These are all on side stand (if you need on centre it will have to wait until I am at home. BUT I have a custom suspension system so it may be different).

Do as DarrenM suggested and I would also check the rake of your head stock and make sure that you have strait forks ... also make sure that you mudguard and bash plate are the correct ones...

I experienced the same problem on jumps, my mate also. We just cut off 2-3 cm of the fender and the problem is gone away.

Iv determined that my forks were too soft and the mudguard was distorted..

Iv put 10w oil in the forks to firm them up and cut 3" off the fender !!
