Africa Twin exhaust
 
Hi,

the exhaust on my 2001 AT is rusted and blowing in places. Planning a RTW for the end of next year, and a few weeks in Morocco in Spring. So I would like to replace it now. Any recommendations? Can you get smaller/thinner end cans so the right pannier can be moved closed to the bike?

The Remus Grand Prix is oval shaped & narrower overall than the Honda std. These come in 2 versions, either with the "E4" stamp for road use, or with the "Not For Road Use" stamp (which is quite easily buffed off).
I can give you a measurement later today if you want, bike isnt handy at the moment (ie; I cant be bothered getting off my a**e and walking to the carpark).

Roughly 145mm from the outside edge of the rear mudguard to the outside of the can, or approximately 5mm wider than the std indicator.
I have 35mm clearance between the can and pannier rack (givi tubular)
Not sure how wide a std honda unit is but I use a BSM can on MOT day which is similar in dimensions and considerably wider. You will also find the Remus to be half the weight of a honda can.

What's the difference in noise between the original exhaust and the Remus (in both guises)? My experience of Remus is mainly on overly loud sports bikes.

Take a look on the laser produro pot. That is the least building pot i have seen. Recomended at the ATIC site, for that purpose.
I have seen some pictures of people who lovered the end can under the sideboxes to reduce the with.
African queens sell a slim twin solution, touratech panniers and a slimer rack (TT also)and a lover set exhaust. Pictures on the german side.

The road legal remus is reasonably quiet, but sounds much better that the honda, I have not however, heard them side by side for comparison. My "not for road use" remus grand prix isnt overly loud either at idle, cruising speeds, around town etc. You really hear the difference with a wide open throttle & hard accelleration. It is certainly not as loud as most race cans on sports bikes.

Just bought a 'Remus Titanium' race can for my A.T. The quality is much better the than 'Laser Produro' I had on my last A.T. Can't comment on how loud it is, but the Laser was a race can and wasn't all that loud.

Can anyone tell me how much difference a new exhaust actually makes to bike performance? (I'm thinking on-road here).

Basically, does spending £200 or so really add up in terms of:
increased top speed?
improved acceleration?

or is it just for the noise! (I like the fact that my AT is quiet, it's loud enough with the colour).

Is it necessary to re-jet the carbs for a new exhaust?
Does it make any difference to fuel consumption? (thirsty as she is already)

A weight improvement of a few pounds surely isn't an issue for a bike like ours...!?

If replacing the whole system, then the biggest gain is in buying a stainless steel system, not chrome plated mild steel. I always buy stainless, my GSX-R pipework is 10 years old & still in use.

I'm assuming that you're UK based? If so, try www. predatormotorsport.co.uk or on 01707-334050/334090. I bought stainless pipework for my DR600 from them a couple of years ago. They're not performance pipes, just copies of standard pipes designed to take standard silencers. If still the case, you should also be able to fit any other aftermarket silencer that fits standard pipework? Predator also make their own silencers but have not seen one, so unable to comment.

thanks Steve, but what does it actually do???

my original exhaust (1996) is in good condition - I pour some old engine oil down it from time to time (overnight and blast it onto an old blanket when next starting) which seems to have helped it from rusting from the inside to out.

I just want to know what real performance improvement I could get from changing the original Honda setup... Anyone?

I confused your posting with that of Doug, the thread starter - apologies!

I don't think you'd get much benefit unless you were changing the jetting, air filter & possibly the ignition/valve timing also. Even then, I doubt you'd get more than a few HP at most, more likely to gain a few hp at the top end at the expense of mid range, which is not whats wanted.

Fitting a race can and a K&N air filter makes a noticable difference to the Africa Twin. I've done this to both the AT's Ive had ('Laser Produro' on first bike, 'Remus' to second). I don't know what the exact figures are but I would guess at somewhere between 5 and 8 bhp or around 10%. There's no need to re-jet. The rest of the exhaust, other than the link pipe which has to be replaced when changing the end can anyway, is stainless.
