Singing Praises: XL600V Transalp

Well, after a BMW 1150GS, although a fine bike that met my every need, the little Honda XR I bought with the write-off money seemed a great find: light, relialbe, economical and good off-road, but horribly frequent oil changes and no pillion option were just the start: a habit of destroying my lower back after only 30 mins was the final straw...It had to go.

So what now? Well, I collected a Transalp XL600V from England, and I rode it back to Estonia, via the Rostock-Helsinki ferry last weekend.

Basically, I did 1000km on a single saturday on that bike and I must say that if anyone is looking for a comfortable, reliable, and pretty economical bike, on a budget, you could do a heck of a lot worse than a TA!!
:funmeteryes:
For overlanding, despite being water cooled (another potential system to go wrong), I feel these are sadly overlooked bikes.

Despite all the talk of off-road this and off-road that, most overlanders know that the lots if not the majority of miles are on tarmac. For this reason, I think this an excellent choice of bike. Nimble, quick enough, comfy and still able to negotiate a dirt track/pot-holed trail, should the need arise. At 183kg dry it is no where near as light as the XR, but once on the move, it feels as light as a feather.

So if you have less than €2000 to spend (or have more but prefer to spend it on petrol and memories): give these a serious thought!!:scooter::scooter::scooter:

1987 Honda XL 600 R

I have narrowed my choices to the following options (mostly based on location, budget):

1987 Honda XL 600 R

1990 Honda XLR 250 (Baja)

Both bikes are in good shape for their age and around the same price (surprisingly).

I will be using the bike for getting around town. About two 250km trips / month. And an average of two 3,000km + trips around East Africa / year.

Again, obviously feedback is subjective. But. I would love to hear some opinions, thoughts, advice, insight, etc.

Thanks. Cheers.

Hi I‘m an Italian member

I‘m planning some mid/long distance rides to Eastern Europe and Middle East in 2010 with a Yamaha ‘93 XTZ Super Ténére (revamped engine/ clutch / gear change/ suspensions and near-to-perfection bodywork). Now that everything has been done I‘m just wondering .. is it really the right bike? Did I invest a lot of money for the company old and overweight lady?
Silly questions maybe.. but anybody who could reassure me? I'm just like the one who's waiting for a biopsy test result.

Thanks

Honda C-90 or similar in South America

Hi all,

We're 3 people going soon on a trip which will start in south america. since budget is very tight and should hopefully keep us going a long time, the honda cub (c-90) should be a good cheap solution for transportation.

I have tried gathering info on the net but it's a bit difficult due to language barriers and such stuff, so it would be a great help if anyone here can help with a few points:

We land in sao paulo, are this bikes common there? Is it possible to find a decent one for up to $500 (preferebly less)? Is there somewhere else where it would be better to buy them?

As far as I could see Honda cubs are no longer sold as new in SA, instead they sell the Honda wave which should be of the same family. Can it be expected the same reliability? for how low can we find a decent used one?

Any help appreciated

buY BIKE IN CANADA OR USA

hI EVERYONE, AM A NEW MEMBER
I HAVE BEEN AVIDLY READING ALL THE INFO ABOUT TRANSPORTING BIKES ETC FROM HERE TO THERE, i was contemplating taking my DR650 se from Brisbane to Valparaiso Chile and heading north to Alaska. which will take me a year plus. It appears from the hubb that writers are stating that buying a bike in Chile or Argentina has a plethora of border and customs problems.

Also with regards to some of the problems and costs, would i be better off just flying to USA or Canada and buying a bike and starting the other way around. So my question is what are the rules and regulations for a foreigner to buy a bike in USA with documents etc. Do I need a residential address and this and that. If you think it is a good idea to buy a bike ion north America can anyone steer me in the right direction where to buy to have it sorted for a big trip or what forum to organizes here before i go.
all abit confusing but y am sure you get the gist of my inquiry

prefer a Dr 650 Se Suzuki or KLR 650 Kawasaki, hopefully to be set up for a very long adventure ..
thanks in advance.
