Is it possible to bring a vehicle in at any border with Iran? I know you can do it at Bazargan, but that's very frequently used by overlanders.

Is the temporary carnet valid for more than 1 month?

I'll either be entering Iran from the Islam Qala / Dogharoon border (Afghanistan) or the Gudurlom / Pol border (Turkmenistan), neither of which I expect deal commonly with foreign vehicles - would you risk turning up without a carnet?

Thanks

Hi folks,
After searching through this fantastic forum i can't find much about one way trips.
I own an Australian registered KLR (tho I'm British) and plan to ride the bike to the UK next year. I know that some asian and african countries will want to see a carnet
So......
Does a carnet from australia come into the equation still or, as I won't be returning the bike to australia, does this defeat it's purpose?
Can I get a carnet issued by the Uk (even tho it's an aussie bike) on the basis that I will end up there and not be importing the bike to other countries along the way?
I'll keep researching but if someone can help pls post.

Hi, I got the yellow card in Nairobi for Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, but they said no more coverage for SA and Mozambique. Does anyone know how to get insurance for those countries? I am arriving Cape Town on 19th November by plane and riding north to Kenya.

I'm in the middle of planning for our UK - Oz trip but am having some issues on the whole carnet thing.

Our trip obviously requires us to pass through some countries (we're going via Iran, Pakistan & India) for which Carnets are a requirement, but I'm struggling with the non-compulsory countries, for example Jordan & Syria.

I keep reading that you can buy a temporary carnet for these 2 countries at the border (quoted costs seem to vary) but have also seen people saying that they've used their carnets to enter the country.

What is the best (cheapest) way to do this? Get my visa in the UK or at the border? And can i just include these countries on my trip carnet?

Apologies in advance......

Hi,

I couldn't find an open thread for this, so...

I have just been getting the final polish done on my carnet with CAA (and the VERY helpful Suzanne Danis) and here is the info I got for the countires I want to visit.

For South America, Suzanne said that while the carnet isn't technically required, you could have losts hassles without one. If you are getting one anyway, add the SA countires- they don't cost extra and I think they will help my border crossings since they always seem to love paperwork!

So, once again, this is the CAA list and the reality on the ground may be different- especially in SA.

Need visa and guide cost help - Algeria, Libya

Hey all,

Myself my father and my little brother are a month into our trip starting from England, hoping to get back to Australia on our KLRs, depending on how the Aussie $ fares.

We are currently in Morocco and in a months time will be heading back either to Spain to catch the ferry to Algeria, or heading to Italy to catch a ferry to Libya then continuing our way across Nth Africa.

We have been doing our research and can find no real clearcut answers to our questions so can anyone be of any help to us with some real life recent experience.

Algeria
1. Is the ferry really over 300 euro??
2. Is Spain, Madrid the only place for us to get visas there, or can we get them in Casablanca and how long do they take to get?
3. Is it true that you need guides all over Algeria now and not just in the South?? If so, how much do they cost and does anyone have any favourite tour companies? I have heard Agence Tanezrouft is good.

Tunisia
1. I have heard we can get visas on arrival from the ferry, is this true??
2. Does the South now require tour guides and can anyone recommend a good tour company and cost is this is true

Libya
1. Seems the rules keep changing here with regards to the size of your touring party. Is it still minimun of 4 or can we get through with our three??
2. How easy is it to get a visa beforehand, where is the best place and how long will it take?? I have heard it can save a lot of trouble by getting a tour company to get one for you.
3. Guides. Rumours of 200 Euro a day?? Please do not tell me that is each person!! Anyone with recent experience and any recommendations?

Egypt
1. Anyone with recent experience of crossing the border from Libya??
2. I have heard that the road taxes down south and in the Western desert can be hefty. Have these fees eased and do you need a tour company?

I will keep researching but if anyone could give us some information or is interested in meeting up somewhere down the track, we would love to hear from you.

Cheers,
The Mullens

Pakistan Visa Issued in Tehran Iran (British Citizen)

British Application for Pakistan Visa in Tehran Iran. & Iran Visa. Accepted
  10th November 2009

Embassy was closed on Thursday & Friday.
Letter of Introduction collected on Monday AM
Visa Submitted on Tuesday, Approved on Sunday & Paid Fee, [Monday was a holiday], Collected Tuesday
Route was Traveling on motorbike through Iran to Quetta -> Lahore -> India. with hotel in Lahore written in application as place to stay.

  Visa Steps.
   1) Submit Information [Passport Still in My Possession]

  Application Form
Statement of travel for previous countries (in this passport).
  3 Photo’s 3*4
Complete Copy of Passport (excluding blank pages)
Letter of introduction from Embassy (63$ (ish))
Letter of reason why I didn’t apply in my home country.
I Included a Website copy of my European job, to show why not in UK as it is does not show in the passport as visas etc.
                  2) Visa Approved, Payment Required
Payment of 730,000 IRR into their Bank Account (Down the street)
Receipt Handed into Side Door Sunday

2a) Wait Monday because of Pakistan Holiday.

                  3) Tuesday Collection of Passport.
  .
  Visa’s Already in Passport :
6 month multi entry to India (issued in UK)
1 month Single Entry to Iran.

Iran Visa. Organized through Iranian Visa.Com.

  Fantastic. Simple. Efficient.

  1 Email, 1 money transfer.
1 Day to wait at consulate for them to put the visa into passport.

I think that beats 10 days for a Pakistan visa to be issued !.

The Iranian visa has got to be one of the easiest Visas I have got in a long time. I phoned up Hamid at Iranian visa (very cheap through my SkypeOut) as it was around Ramadan and agreed on the date that my Authorization would be completed. I filled out the forms online with all my details and arranged payment. This was done through Western Union to his Turkish Recipient because of International Laws you cannot easily transfer to Tehran. This was the cheapest way of paying the bill. And turned out to be really easy on the internet, and Sarah at IranianVisa.com confirmed receipt of the money within the day.

Collecting my approved visa was amazingly easy too. I went to the Iranian Istanbul Consulate, handed my passport over, they gave me the form to fill in with my passport photo’s and a bank slip to pay the visa bill. I ran around the corner paid the money in, photocopied the application attached my photo’s and returned to the Consulate. Everything was ok, leave your passport and return 10am tomorrow morning. I returned at 9:30am, and collected my Passport with Visa. SIMPLE.

Hi Guys,

Off to Africa East/West coasts next year. Better to get maps before I go and have them posted or buy them on the hoof? What are the quality of generally available maps like out there?
