Hi there all, my first thread.

I'm planning to take a trip around Africa early in 2011 and need some info from everyone who have knowledge of riding Africa. I'll be doing the trip on my trusted 200cc dual-purpose bike. First, doing it on a 200cc, what will I have to take into special consideration maintenance wise for the bike? Second, what is the average cost per day going cheaply (food, sleep, fuel, guessing between R200-R300?). Thirdly, more or less the duration for such a trip. I will go along the coast most of the way, up the east side and down the west side.

I think I read somewhere in a post of someone doing it on a DR200, would like to get in touch with him.

Thank you all in advance.

Anyone knows an insurance that cover west african country?

Taking my first adventure ride this winter with my best friend Matt. We're both very new to riding, and traveling. So we decided to take it easy and go on a little 10,000 mile trip through Central/South America. We don't know too much about fixing bikes, and I took some Spanish in high school, but Matt doesn't know much at all.
What we can do though is make a great film! We're documenting the whole thing in HD, so be prepared to see us in action next summer when the film is finished (assuming we're still alive).
We're just about to build the bikes...

Does anyone have any advice for me?

Do you think that it's a good idea me going? (Solo)

Planning a 3 week trip round Morocco on a Bonneville this Christmas. Would be grateful for any advice or suggestions regarding the following...

1. How far can we expect to get on the Bonnie before the roads run out and we get left behind by the GS boys?
2. We will be 2-up so luggage space will be tight. Are cheap hotels easy enough to come that we can leave the tent and sleeping bags at home?
3. Weather? I have been up in the high atlas before and seen photos of deep snow up there but what can we expect on the coast, temperature-wise?
4. We're planning on taking the ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta. What documents are required for the import paperwork for the bike? Does it have to be organised in advance or can we sort it all out at the habour? Does it take long? How much does it cost?
5. Any recommendations on places to visit/avoid?

Thanks for your help :)

Hi ,
I am planning to buy a cj750 with sidecar in china and drive it back home to Malta around Sep 2010. I have only just started planning this even though Ive been wanting to do this for years. I understand its a big hassle to buy a bike in china and get a chinese drivers licence but im determined!
I would like to drive from china - nepal - india - pakistan - iran - turkey - europe but im a bit paranoid about driving through pakistan. If any one has any advice on alternate routes and how to deal with buying a bike in china and sorting all the paper work out to exit china would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah is it possible to get a carnet on the bike in china and is it really neccesary ? anyways thanks in advance.....Luke.

Advice / Local Knowledge Needed - NE mexico

Hi All
I'm looking for some advice to help me with my route planning. We're riding from Phoenix to Veracruz and back. Once we get to a city we're staying in I don't mind back roads for exploring and day trips but between destinations I like to stay on main roads and/or the autopista as much as possible. We're fully loaded and two-up on a DL650 and the Topes and stop and go of the secondary roads take their toll, especialy on my passanger.

I've bussed all over Mexico and have ridden my bike down the west coast twice so we'd like something different but the insurance rep at Sanbourns suggested we stay on the main west coast highway all the way to Guadalajara and then cross over to Veracruz via Mex City. This seems like a long way to go, plus it'll be boring because we've done it so often.

Here's my tentative plan;
Cross at Douglas AZ and take secondary rds (2 & 10) until they hook up with the main highway leading to Chihuahua. From there follow the autopista to Torreon, where we'll head east to Monterrey and then south on the autopista to San Luis Potosi. We'll dog leg into Doloris Hidalgo and then get back on the main highway/autopista through Mexico City to Veracruz. I know some of the die hard duel sport types will think I'm wimping out but we only have three weeks in total and my passanger is a 58 year old grandmother and if moma's not happy, no one's happy! A smooth safe trip on the autopista might be boring to some but I'm more than willing to compromise if it gets my wife on the bike.

So......after that long and boring preamble, if anyone has recent experience and/or first hand knowledge of this route and area of Mexico I'd really appreciate your feedback.
Cheers

Need visa and guide cost help - Algeria, Libya

Hey all,

Myself my father and my little brother are a month into our trip starting from England, hoping to get back to Australia on our KLRs, depending on how the Aussie $ fares.

We are currently in Morocco and in a months time will be heading back either to Spain to catch the ferry to Algeria, or heading to Italy to catch a ferry to Libya then continuing our way across Nth Africa.

We have been doing our research and can find no real clearcut answers to our questions so can anyone be of any help to us with some real life recent experience.

Algeria
1. Is the ferry really over 300 euro??
2. Is Spain, Madrid the only place for us to get visas there, or can we get them in Casablanca and how long do they take to get?
3. Is it true that you need guides all over Algeria now and not just in the South?? If so, how much do they cost and does anyone have any favourite tour companies? I have heard Agence Tanezrouft is good.

Tunisia
1. I have heard we can get visas on arrival from the ferry, is this true??
2. Does the South now require tour guides and can anyone recommend a good tour company and cost is this is true

Libya
1. Seems the rules keep changing here with regards to the size of your touring party. Is it still minimun of 4 or can we get through with our three??
2. How easy is it to get a visa beforehand, where is the best place and how long will it take?? I have heard it can save a lot of trouble by getting a tour company to get one for you.
3. Guides. Rumours of 200 Euro a day?? Please do not tell me that is each person!! Anyone with recent experience and any recommendations?

Egypt
1. Anyone with recent experience of crossing the border from Libya??
2. I have heard that the road taxes down south and in the Western desert can be hefty. Have these fees eased and do you need a tour company?

I will keep researching but if anyone could give us some information or is interested in meeting up somewhere down the track, we would love to hear from you.

Cheers,
The Mullens

Alps in May

I've been scouring around for info on riding the passes in the Alps during May. I plan on spending a month riding across as many Alpine passes as I can fit in from Andorra to Austria. The smaller, more gravelly and less travelled, the better. I was last over there in 1974 but that was June and a few high passes were just barely open at that time. Now with climate change, I am wondering if most will be passable. I will be camping for the majority of time. Anyone game to join me for some portions? I'll be heading out from Rotterdam on an 1150GS. Any suggestions for "not to be missed passes" are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

Hi,

Im currently in India but have decided that I should probably start planning the next part of my journey to Oz after I ship to Bangkok.

Does anyone have any info regarding ferries (or small rowing boats) through Indonesia and eventually to Oz?

Sorry if this has been asked before but a search didn't bring anything of use up.

Thanks

Planning for next summer.

Seeking advise on crossing Alps from Italy to Austria on small gravel roads. Like the small backroads to be found in Alpes Maritime, Tende-, Barcelonette-areas and probably many more, not found on normal road maps. There must be similar i Dolomittes ??? PS going sidecar URAL.
