Yugoslavia and Slovakia...

Iam hoping to travel near Yugoslavia and Slovakia but depending on how much there is to see there I will spend more time in Hungary and Austria.
So just wondering if there any must see places or is it worth skipping these countrys for more time in others?

I don't know Slovakia, but personally think that former Yugoslavia (and Albania as well) is far more beautiful and interesting for an adventurous traveller than Austria and Hungary.

Former Yugoslavia (and Albania) is a land of extreme contrasts, spectacular landscapes, wild areas, diverse cities, friendly people, surrealistic situations, the place where East and West meet and merge (and, unfortunately, sometime clash...).

Of course, it's still less confortable and much more tricky than Western Europe, but if you are curious enough and like adventures I definitely reccomend it.

My girlfriend is from Slovakia so i am always trying to encourage people to visit. The capital, Bratislava although on the Danube is not that inspiring but there are some nice parts but it loses out to it's bigger sister Prague once the capital for Czech and Slovakia.
The south is fairly flat as you come out of Hungary but gradually gets more interesting as you move North towards the popular ski areas and into the Tatras mountains that border Poland. One particular road comes to mind is the road that heads north from Brezno through the big ski area there.Ok, it's not the Alps but it's somewhere different and cheaper.
Not alot of native bikes on the road so beware the car drivers are not that aware of bikes and from what I've seen they are not the safest drivers in Europe. You either come against an old boy in an ancient Skoda doing a snails pace or you get some idiot in a BMW driving like there's no tomorrow.
If you need any info on particular areas in Slovakia i shall ask girlfriend and get back to you.
There was a Slovakian guy on here sometime ago giving out info on best roads etc.Forgot his name but do a search and something will come up.

Croatia, a part of former yugoslavia, is well worth a visit. Beautiful country with friendly people. But what is maybe the best, is the old style of the mediterrainean way of architecture and everyday life. just as you can imagine Italy and southern France was a hundred or more years ago.

You'll have to take the time, here are , IMHO, only top spots:

Slovenia:
Bled, Bohinj, the road along Soca river

Croatia:
peninsula Istra - great wine roads, stunning scenery and old, small towns.
Road Senj - Zadar THE road to travel by bike in Croatia
National Park Plitvice - plan at least 3-4 hours to spend there
Town Sibenik - beautyfull and, untill now, spared from the touristic crowds.
The road along the coast to Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik as it is.

Bosnia
Mostar - visit the Mostar bridge then travel...
Along the river Neretva (great road)
to Sarajevo and visit Bascarsija

Serbia
unfortunatelly, i'm not well familiar with that part

Monte Negro
travel along the river Tara,
visit the stunning coast.

Macedonia
Lake Ohrid - an UNESCO world herritage place.

But there is a lot more to see on the territory of former Yugoslavia.

Also planning a two week trip in Sept via the Black forest, Alps & Dolomites which will give us a week Slovenia & Croatia.

I was planning on taking the coast road probably as far as Zadar then cutting back up to Bled.

Hopefully the roads & scenery will be as good as everyone tell me.

Regards

Baz
