Wild Greece

Couple of questions about Greece

1. Anyone know any good campsites anywhere between Igoumenitsa and Athens, and then Athens to Turkish border?

2. Is wild camping allowed?

3. Are there any good areas for exploration with a 4x4?

4. How much is diesel?

1. Anyone know any good campsites anywhere between Igoumenitsa and Athens, and then Athens to Turkish border?

When driving south from Igoumenitsa, the 1st campsite is about 7 kms from the ferry, on your right. Good food.
Inbetween I didn't stop. On the middle finger of Chalkidiki in the south-eastern part of the small town of Sarti there's a nice camp. The one in the north is a bit ramshackle.

2. Is wild camping allowed?

I reckon the Greeks are just about the most laid back people of Europe. If you are on any dirt road and find a secluded spot next to the track, I'm sure nobody will chase you away.

3. Are there any good areas for exploration with a 4x4?

Dunno about 4x4, but the Pindos mts. still offer lots of dirt roads in varying conditions. I explored the small backroads in Chalkidiki on my bike, which was lovely No traffic and always a great view across the surrounding landscape.

4. How much is diesel?

Don't know the present situation, but in April fuel was about 25 - 30 cents cheaper than in Germany. Our fuel prices are more or less equal to yours

Re- 1;Mereora has a selection of sites - spend a few hours at the Monasteries, they´re nice.
3;Buy one of the ROAD fold-out maps. They´re available for all Greece (put together my their Army) at many fuel-stops, and aim for the white minor roads, and enjoy (i did, oohhh yes!).

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
