Norway to Murmansk - Buy Insurance at border?

Hi All,

Two of us are proposing to travel from Nordkapp to Murmansk, south then to Kandalaksha then back to Finland.

I contacted my insurance people here in Ireland and they tell me that I will not be covered in Russia and that they cannot make any provision for this.

Can you tell me if I can buy Insurance from the Russian Authorities at the border crossing for the 3 days that I will be in Russia?

One time when I rode to Belarus this was the situation and my own insurance whilst according to my insurers was valid in Belarus was not accepted by the Belarusians and I purchased insurance at the border.

Any help is appreciated

Declan

Yes you can buy insurance at the border and if I remember correctly I was told it was available from an agent in Kirkness (there is a bus to murmansk) and I believe its the same tour agent who deals in tickets /insurance etc but that was many years ago now. You will need your international driving permit, your invite and visa. I would also check that the border crossing back into Finland you are using will be straightforward some can be more difficult than others. Have a good trip take a look at nikel its like a scene from the future after global warming has done its worst. Also there is a great camping spot on the Norwegian side at Jackobselv right on the sea and the border fence but a way north of the border crossing point.

Russia has joined to green card system 1.1.2009, so your own insurance should work... Maximum compensation is only 11 000 euro though. You need also valid travel insurance when you apply a visa.
The road is paved almost all the way, only some gravel between Kandalaksa and Finnish border. The border in Salla is open only day time.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
