UK to Romania End Aug/ sept 2013

Hi everyone,

it's been a while since my last post. I can't get access to the HU at work anymore! Disaster! :(

Anyway, planning to ride from London to Romania and back late August this year. (3 weeks round trip)

No precise plan now.
WE will cross (Blast through more precisely!) France, Northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia into Romania.

Any suggestion once there most welcome. Apart from the Transfagarasna and the Transalpina, maybe touring Transylvania (must tour Dracula county!) it is very vague!
What is a must ? What roads? What areas?

Cheers,

transfag is worth the price of the ticket alone!
I was support truck driver for 10 bikes doing it 18 months ago, awesome trip, but can be closed due to snow even in summer! had just opened a few days before we went through. bottom section is as potholed as hell and can easilly break wheels but does improve further up.

Hi Moggy,

yes it is a bit of a concern as I read that the transfag is open only about 2 months a year. But I could not find which of those 2 months it was. I hope that end of August /early Sept it would be open. I would be awesome to ride!

Cheers,

romania is great

Hi
We did Romania quite extensively in 2011 as part of a 5 mth trip.
The blog on it is: Two Wheels move the Soul, then click on "2011", then "August".
If you are using a GPS I can provide you with our waypoints which includes crossing from Bulgaria and exiting into the Ukraine.
Must Places like Sinaia, Rasnov, Bran, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Buchovina Monasteries, and of course the Transfargarasen, are must sees.
Bucharest is an eastern replica of Paris with it's own Arch d'T, and wide boulevards and 2nd largest building in the world.
Let me know how we can help, or if this does.

Hi Brian and Sandra,

Thanks, I will check all those locations in my guide and maps. They look awesome, we will definitely get there. Maybe not Buchovino, unless we have time to get there.

As we will only have 3 weeks (including riding there and back from London) so I need to get organised and design a loop that will not miss the best of Romania.

Sticking to the Carpathian Mountains and Transylvania should keep us nicely occupied. If we have time to wander further East.

Cheers

Good luck, if there is anything we can do to help info wise let us know.

Bike Shuttle to Romania

Romania, Transsilvania... great trip!

For those who'd like to do this but shun the long distance to get there, here's something that may interest you:
There's a small Bucharest-based trucking company that offers bike shuttle services from Germany, Holland, UK to Romania. Bikes get picked up a few days before riders travel by air (cheap flights at wizzair.com among others); their bikes are already there when they arrive and ready to take off.
Same on the way back: drop off bike, fly home - the bike will be brought back to your door a few days later.
Available to individual travellers or to groups (at even better rates).
Their website is currently not up, so send me PM if you are interested...

Romania=2 must-do motorcycle roads

Hi Maria! Part of your itinerary is common with a guided motorcycle tour I have done last year. You can find some inspiration from this tour: South Eastern Europe motorcycle tours -
South Eastern Europe motorcycle tours. Travel like a local.

I like to do my rides on my own; but i do not like just passing near by places and not knowing what these places mean for locals - so this means preparation and a lot of reading. The other way is an organized guided tour. The danger with these guided tours are that not all the companies that organize them are specialized travel agencies with serious guides that can tell you a lot about local culture...so you have to verify if a company have a tourism business license before you book. At least that's the way I do.

Anyway remaining on topic 2 must-do motorcycle roads: Transfagarasan and Transalpina. If you enter Romania from South than I would recommend you to go first on Transalpina (begins on Novaci) and to cross then the Carpathian on Transfagarasan (it is the most spectacular crossing it from North to South); than you can go to Bran Castle over the mountains again.
See my blog http://rideinromania.wordpress.com/ .

If you have some mechanical problem see a list of persons that can help:

It's starting to get cold. You should expect ~15c (or colder) above 800-900m. I know that this is not bad in the northen part of Europe, but after 3 weeks with +25c all the time this is bloody cold for me.

The best time to do this travel its from June until September.
Otherwise in the another period its a lottery. For example now on Transfagarasan its snowing also on Transalpina and its about 5 degree outside.

If anybody have questions about adventure touring in Romania, you can ask and i give you all the informations.

I'm doing a similar journey from the UK at around the same time. I haven't finalised the details yet but we want to cover as many countries as possible over 2 weeks: 14 countries are already pencilled in.

All times are GMT +1. The time now is 23:31.
