Turkey, car insurance help please....

Hi, we are on the road at present (actually ferry from Italy to Greece).
Will be arriving Cesme (Turkey) from Chios (Greek island) with our UK registered car.
Can anyone advise latest situation / costs re getting third party car insurance and visas (if required) on arrival at Cesme / Izmir
Thanks
Scott

For your car.
If your green card doesnt cover Turkey, ask for the insurance office at the gate where you can buy minimum 1 month Turkish traffic ins..

Your car will be stamped on your passport page with a permission of 180 days staying period..
No carnet and visa for the car needed.
(If you are not the boss of the car, you may be asked for the Turkish translation of the notarized power of attorney for the car)

For yourself....(UK.citizens)
You can buy your visa stamps at the bordergate.

United Kingdom:
Diplomatic pasaport holders are exempted from visa for their travels up to 90days. Ordinary, service and special passport holders are required to have visa to enter Turkey. Ordinary passport holders can obtain three month-multiple entry visas at the Turkish border gates.

VISA FEES..
UNITED KINGDOM
3 Months
20 $ or 15 € or 10 £

TIP...:
If you like night life and noisy streets, stay in Çeşme..If you are looking for a quiet place with a beautiful sand, beach and natural spa. stay at Ilıca and visit şifne beauty mud.( Ask for Şifne çamur banyosu.)..
You will also be surprised to meet hot water spring among the jetty rocks in the sea of Ilıca....
Just 4 km on the main road to İzmir.

Not sure about your route and destination, (guess iskenderun ferry) highly recommend you to stay at selçuk(ephesus), pamukkale,kaş,cappadocia...

Wish you all the best...

Thank you Mehmet.
That's very helpful (& quick).
We won't be staying in Cesme.
Will certainly visit Ephesus and Kas (been to Pamukkale before - great place).

Scott

Ferry

Mehmet,
Do you know anything about the ferry to Egypt?

wearthefoxhat 28 Mar 2013 16:15

I would also be keen to find out the latest, as we will need to take it sometime around late August.
There's also talk of a ferry from Turkey to Lebanon, which we are looking into, but I'm not sure of the issues associated with getting from Lebanon into Turkey by land yet.

Ferries available only to Israel and Egypt from İskenderun since last summer..Within few days, summer schedules will be announced..When clear, sure will announce it here..Being in Israel will cause problems while entering Egypt and both Sudans...

Also another ferry line is expected to start again between Mersin and Egypt.
Personally talked to İskenderun agent about 2 months ago.

Currently the only option to reach Africa from east is.
İskendeun -Demietta..Turkish trucks take the same route to African and Gulf countries...
In mid January, my friends paid 270 USD. for 1 bike and 285 Usd. for 1 passenger...Every,wed.thurs.sat.sun..Takes 18 hours..A lot of delays at both sides because of Syrian immigrants and Egyptian paperworks..Better to keep much drinks and cookies in stock for waitings in ports..No food and drinks problem on ferries..

For reservation and current inf.

But remember things always may change so fast in this area.Israel excused officially and our prime minister will be in Gazza very soon...

Spirit of adventure as usual, all questions for Turkey friendly welcome..
Wish you happy,safe,lucky trips.

Ferry

Thanks I will keep an eye on your posts. Will be in Turkey in late July.

Thanks all for the heads-up.
As it turned out, getting into Turkey was not too much of a problem.
The issue really got more difficult when we tried to get out as we had to get over to Cyprus for a wedding.
Even getting from northern (Turkish) Cyprus into southern (Greek) Cyprus wasn't too bad (when you can eventually find the crossing point in Nicosia). The worst of it was getting the car from mainland Turkey to Turkish Cyprus (cost about $500 for a return ticket, plus Turkish car insurances not valid in Turkish Cyprus, etc).
I've put some notes up on the blog if anyone needs more info.
