Touring Scotland
 

Hi All

I'm planning a short notice trip to Scotland in a week or so . I'll be riding up from Coventry (UK) so plan on an easy day each way leaving me with 7 days to actually ride around Scotland. The idea is to have a short rest from life rather than go mad trying to see everything.

I'm not interested in the big cities and want to get off the beaten track really but do like the coast.QUESTION: Anyone have any suggestions of 'must see' places or areas to visit. I don't have any set plans other than dates so any ideas will be really appreciated as ever. I've never travelled on my doorstep before so there's a novel concept!!

Hi Chris

Can strongly recommend the north west coast to you. With 7 days you could really get to grips with Everything from The bridge of orchy, up to Glencoe, Fort William, Roy Bridge and them up towards:

Down to Mull if you fancy it

then:

Kyle of Lochalsh - over to the Isle of Skye - can really recommend the North West corner - Dunvegan - The drive/ride out there is stunning and a good campsite.

down the south of Skye to Glenbrittle... outstanding place.

Heading back to the main land - Head North to Loch Torridan... and follow back down either the West coast or over to Inverness and back down the great glen, loch lomand etc...

They say the midges are really bad but I was camping up there in July last year with no real problems.... Skye is great if you want to spend loads of time there, B&B's get full so booking is better but we turned up at 10pm on a saturday night and a couple put us up just out of dunvegan - he used to own a bike shop in Pontefract, West Yorkshire.

I could witter on for ages about the places up there but won't... Enjoy...

I agree, the NW and W coast is superb. There's Ullapool, which is nice, but I didn't like Fort William, try Oban instead - there's a great road south of there (A816) check a map.
For ideas try http://www.bytefactory.com/mcycle/index.shtml it's a bit of a drag as there's no search but woth a look.

some additional recommendations:
On the Isle of Skye there's a little town in the North-East called Floddigarry. They have a quite unique Pub there with arabian-style interior. From there you may take the road to Uig via the Quirang Hills. Good fun!

Returning from Skye don't miss the Applecross Mountains! If the weather is fine you'll see the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Stunning scenery.

On the East-Side of the country you may have a look at mediterranean Tarbet Ness Peninsula. Almost like France ;-)

If you haven't gone yet look on your map for the road north from ullapool which turns west toward Achiltibuie then north to Lochinver. Then follow round peninsula to Stoer and out to main road at Kylesku. Return by main road. Good camping at Ardmair bay just north of ullapool and other sites at Stoer and Scourie. Also great scenery south from ullapool to loch torridon and applecross peninsula with it's high pass is great. Regards.
