For those who have ridden around the Nurburgring
 

Hi all,

I'm planning an excursion through the French and Swiss Alps in a few weeks time, taking it easy (hopefully). Haven't got a fixed route but am thinking of heading north after the Alps up into Germany and passing not far from the Nurburgring.

Have always fancied a ride around this but am a bit apprehensive, especially after watching a couple of videos on Youtube, R1s vs Porsches etc which has put me off a bit!

From what I've picked up it's best to avoid weekends, wet weather and indicate right to let faster vehicles through... is there anything else to consider?

And what's their policy if your bike's loaded up with panniers, tent etc, will they still let you on, bearing in mind I just want to do a lap for the hell of it rather than try and set and lap records.

You need to remember that your insurance will almost certainly not cover you.

And you have to pay for any armco you wreck.......

The weekends are good to watch but what you've already said is correct. I've spoken to a few regulars with Subaru's, Mitsubishi Evo's, etc, and they've taken the decision not to do weekends anymore as it's now just too mad. It's not exactly empty on the weekday evening sessions but you've got a bit more space for error. Also, it's the locals in battered old BMW's and Golf Gti's that you need to watch out for.

If you do end up there on a weekend, park your bike at one of the cafes at Adenau/Breidschied. The 'ring passes over the public road here and you can easily walk to some great spectator places.

Been over a year since I was last there and I'm itching for another trip right now. Anyone want to share a cabin on the Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry, leaving mid to late September?

Hi, did a few laps of the Ring on Sunday (my 3rd visit) at the end of a 2 month bike tour. The most important things to remember is keep to the right as much as possible, keep a good eye on your mirrors and if you see a vehicle catching you stay to the right and indicate right so they know you have seen them and will stay to the right. it is a fantastic expierence.
i would also recomend a night in Koblenz which is about 35KM away with a campsite near the centre. Andy

Worth checking out this site and it's a great place to stay, with the owner Brendan being one of the top ten riders round there with laps in the mid sevens!!! He shows the bike journos the way round and rides a race prepped R1 and has lots of hairy stories to tell.

He 's a great bloke and he helped sort my bike when I fell off betwen the pay barrier and the track, but that's another story! The tow truck driver did laugh though and his words have haunted me ever since:

"Okay you can push it back. Ha Ha, Guiness Book of Records!"

Have fun and as I was told, don't try and race the cars, as they have four much bigger rubber contact patches then we have on the bikes.

I went there a few years back with my GSXR1000 after I'd finished racing at club level. The bike was perfect, rarely got caught by traffic except for the serious cars like the ChryslerViper that does hot laps. I was on bridgestone road tyres and only started to push after lap5. My mates on TL1000s and Blackbirds didn't have as much fun because they didn't have the same track experience, got stuck in traffic and didn't enjoy it as much. On one of the downhill straights I almost went into the back of a VWGolf and had to overtake on the right (naughty, naughty) - the disparity of the speed of the vehicles there is the biggest problem - I saw 183mph on the clock by the time you pull off the on the start-finish straight... amazing place.
