Storage / Parking in Turkey
Hi folks,

I'm in the early stages of planning my trip, belgium to jordan 6 weeks, this time next year.

Plan 1: Is to ride back up to Turkey, ferry to Cyprus and leave my bike with family for 3 -6 months. Returning spring of 2009 to either ride home or have the bike shipped home.

However...... I need a back-up plan.

Plan 2: Ride back to Turkey and leave my bike in storage - here I need help /advice.

Plan 3: Have the bike shipped by truck back to Belgium - yet to find a transport company willing to help..

Hi Matt,

1- there is no direct ferry from Turkiye to Greek controlled paert of Cyprus. You have to go to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus first and then ride to Greek controlled paert of Cyprus.

2- You can not leave your bike in Turkiye and fly away. When you enter to Turkiye they will stamp your passport that indicates that you have entered with a bike and cant leave without it. To do that, you have to go to customs office near Ataturk Airport in Istanbul and get a permission to leave Turkiye without your bike and will come back within 6 month. (otherwise they will sell your bike in an auction). But it is really pain. Takes 1-2 days and you have to find a secure parking place to keep it, bla bla bla.. it is really pain in bottom.

3- best option. there are lots of shipping companies in Istanbul and in Ankara.

I'll add an extra week and try and ship the bike from Istanbul....
I would only go to Cyprus if it was hassle free and I'm not even sure if I can leave it there....

Any ideas on companies that would ship it from Istanbul ??

The reason for Cyprus, I have family moving there and see it as a perfect storage location !!! only problem is space... they dont have lots of spare room and to turn up with a motorbike .... well I'm sure you get the idea :-)

I was also thinking it would make a perfect starting point, the following year for a small tour with the wife...

I've been reading your blogg and see you've toured in Turkey; where would be my best crossing boarder point into Syria ?

for Syria, you may use Cilvegozo gate in Hatay or Oncupinar in Kilis. Both OK and easy crossing. the one in Kilis is the main one.

You can store your bike at customs in Turkey (Ankara or Istanbul) but you have to calculate a good day to get it in and an other good day to get it out again. You have to run to uncounted different offices to collect stamps und signatures. You will have to drink a lot of tea and you may have to give some money out for the new mosque. But it works (I did it in winter 2005 after I had an accident there). They charge you something like 3 Euro per day the bike is stored there and you will have to pay some other costs for the handling.

Hi,
about TURKEY, Mr. Nevran will help you. He is a Turkish rider who can speak English. And he works in a ship company in Turkey. He knows well about cargo, too.



You may leave Turkey without motorcycle even thugh your passport has a stamp of motorcycle (I could do so last year). But the motorcycle can be in Turkey 6 months.

about Mr. NEVRAN and Turkey, please refer to TURKEY info.

and about Cyprus island, please refer to CYPRUS Island info.
