Southern UK route suggestions?
 

Hey folks, I'm hitting over to the UK in a few weeks on a little mini-tour, arriving over on the ferry to Fishguard, and planning to head along the south of Wales and down towards the Portsmouth region, before hitting up to the London area. Anyone have any routes they would recommend around these parts? I've been searching online, but I'm overwhelmed by the amount of routes (check out the link below), and would be happy if someone just gave me a few suggestions for the areas I'm going to. I'm looking for a few nice scenic routes, off the main highways, etc....

I would suggest you first buy a copy of Michelin map 503, Wales, The Midlands and Southwest England, this has scenic routes marked in green and is helpful in planning nice routes.
I would take the A40 out of Fishguard to Haverfordwest, Carmarthen, Brecon and on to Monmouth. From there take the A466 down the Wye valley, fantastic road, then cross the bridge into England. Bristol and Bath have plenty of history if you are interested and depending on what you mean by smaller road the A36 is not a bad route taking you almost all the way to Portsmouth via Salisbury with a quick detour to see Stonehenge if you want, it is just a pile of old rocks to some.
You could do this in a long day but would be better over 2 with a stopover in Bristol or Bath.
If returning from London the A4 is better than the M4 and if a return ferry from Holyhead is not too far out of your way take a trip up through central Wales, it can be beautiful when it isn't raining.

Cheers Mark, sounds like a good route, I'll take your suggestion. The ViaMichelin website actually gives the same route, and I'll be able to get a hold of their maps somewhere over here. Thanks for the tips, I'll look into Central Wales....with the weather forecast in mind....

What bike have you got ? And what type of roads do you like to ride on
ie my sportsbike A road days are over I like exploring out of the way B roads

I would suggest from bath heading down over salisbury plain on the A36, then take the A350 towards Shaftsbury and Blandford. Take the A30 out of shaftsbury towards salisbury, but only for 100M or so, then go via six penny handley, on the B3081, fast, empty and fun! then take a left towards cranborne on the B3078 towards fordingbridge. continue out of fordingbridge on the B3078 into the new forest until you reach The M27, which will take you to Portsmouth in about 40 minutes. to get back to london you can take the boring route up the A3, or, for a bit more fun, head back along the M27 to junction 10. head north from here on the A32, an epic rd for local bikers. this is the meon valley and well worth exploring if you have the time. The A32 joins the A31 and this will take you north via farnham until you join the A3 again at Guildford.
this route gives a great combination of spectacular scenery, but some fun fast rds if you want them, or you can just cruise.
