Slovakia

Hi All,

Planning on riding up from Turkey to Slovakia next summer. Any tips on what to see in Slovakia? I've had a browse but Slovakia doesn't seem that popular.

Many thanks,

Dicky

Hi Dicky Have done most of the country , Trechin up to Poprad isnt that bad and worth a look . Wouldnt bother with the south near hungary to be honest . As you head east you pass a large castle Spiska something ? from there you can head up to Poland ( Zakopene ) or over to Bardejov and cross the pass near there . Poprad is industrial but is the gateway to the tatra s . the roads in the Tatra s are not that good with lots of potholes . Elsewhere the roads are ok but the M/Ways in the north werent all completed when i lasted visited and suddenly stop . Beware of radar during the warm months , the police are very active - they put radar in roadworks as you enter or hide in trees . Hotels / rooms are cheap as is beer , fuel not so . Not alot of english spoken as you head east and attitudes are very very different to the UK unless the person has worked abroad - im talking about dark skin !! Nice country and nice scenary . There is a couple who used to run an off road company who live near trechin - met them whilst i was visiting and they are delightful . A bit of research should get you a name . Will think on other things i have visited and post later

A Couple of Things

The Dukla Pass (Road 73, E371) from Svidnik to the Polish border was part of the Eastern Front in WW1 and was the route the Russians used to liberate Czechoslovakia in WW2. There's a memorial and museum at the top with evidence of the trenches from WW1. All along the pass are pedestals at the side of the road mounted with military equipment from WW2, tanks, planes, guns, etc.
On a livelier note there's a really good biker rally in Stara Tura at the start of July, Tanec Slnka (the Sun Dance) is held by CMC Indians. Beware if you go you wont get any sleep, Slovakians know how to enjoy themselves!

I stayed here last year Úvod
Great pension and the owner is a biker and will help with routes etc.
Also as above the Dukla pass is worth a visit if you into ww2

Ah thats the pass i couldnt remember :thumbup1: You could cross into poland via bardejov ( small historical town ) and the pass - along the tatras to Krawow and then to Zakopane , cross back into Slovakia down to Banska Bistricia and then across to Spis castle , then i guess head home . I remember the pass from Zakopane back into slovakia was very pretty - i did it in mid june and the temp was in the mid thirties - so pretty mild for you Dicky i guess ?c?

Thank you very much folks for your replies. Time now to get the maps out and put a route together. Mid thirties sounds plenty warm enough for me Chris. When it gets into the high 40's here I hide under a rock!

All the best,

Dicky
