Short French trip - recommendations anyone?

To all those French experts on the HUBB.....

I am thinking of ducking over to France for the easter weekend. Does anyone have any good riding recommendations heading south of Calais - preferably some scenic twisty back roads, a few good dirt trails, maybe the odd single track to keep me occupied, and close proximity to a good vineyard or two would be nice!

cheers

The Vosges? Might be a bit far though.

Matt,

You're asking quite a lot there in just a weekend. Most of the wine producing areas are more southerly. But, for what it is worth, here are some ideas.

I would come into Le Havre rather than Calais. And then tack along the Seine river in the general direction of les Andelys (an old castle thing that makes a nice little stop). There are lots of lovely roads in this area.

I would then head to Cheyreuse via Rambouillet and Dreux on the D983 (pretty pretty road). Perhaps find a hotel around here.

You're then in shooting distance of Paris. How about a going in for the evening, when the streets are empty and the sun is low?

If you are after wine, then head east of Paris to the champagne region. They make a sparkling white that is quite popular. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Just some ideas. Best thing is to get a local road map when you arrive and look for the roads marked in green. They are always fine. Then take it as you please.

Simon, in Nantes, France.
