Italy low emissions zones

Hi all,

In September I'll be driving my 21 year old Peugeot 406 on a European road trip. I'll be transiting through Germany and am aware of the low emissions zones they have in many cities and that those areas are easy to avoid.

When I get to Italy I don't really want to pay to use the motorways but would prefer the free roads (I'm not in a hurry). I've looked at the relevant website but can anyone give me a rough idea about whether it's possible to drive through Italy without using toll roads and also avoid the low emissions zones? I'm talking about transiting towns rather than going into them.

Yes of course it is, just avoid city centres marked as ' ZTL', there are restrictions in all the centre of Rome and Milan as far as I know. They probably wouldn't apply to a foreign registered car but those aren't really cities where you'd have much fun driving around in anyway.

I've been up and down Italy a few times.

The motorways are fast, clear and well maintained. Because you have to pay !! And they're not cheap.. Handy to make progress through cities if need be. I've used them because I had a free telepass from a friend.

The secondary roads are good too but generally slow going. Because many people avoid the costly motorways. But that all depends where you are. The roads are far quieter in the south or away from the cities.

Italy is STUNNINGLY beautiful and there is nothing good to be found on a motorway anyway.

So take your time and forget the motorways.

If you want to visit the popular areas, it makes much more sense to base yourself outside of the centre and use public transport to go into the city.

Thanks for the info. I was worried because in some German cities the LEZ starts way out from the centre and it's very easy to stray into one by mistake. Having said that, I may have driven into Berlin a few times and had no problems.....

Yeah, when I did an RAC route check thing I was pretty surprised at how expensive Italian motorways are. Will defo be stetting the satnav to avoid!
